We delve into the popular (and free) Grimdark Future sci-fi miniatures game from One Page Rules. Will it allow us to put some of our older, semi-obsolete Warhammer 40k minis back on the table? #grimdarkfuture
GrimDark rocks! Our group gave up on GW and 40K and the endless versions/rules/new-more-powerful models...etc... Decades ago, and our toys sat gathering dust. None of our group EVER liked the over-competitive nature of "tuning your list" and showing up with an "Army Book" and items nobody expected/wants to face or 90% of 40K gamers seem to "love". We play games to have fun. We ALL have fun with GrimDark and have used it exclusively for our 25/28mm sci-fi gaming for about 10 years now.
One Page Rules also has some very nice miniatures for 3d printing, and a store for purchasing on demand 3d printed miniatures. They have completed armies for alien bugs and not-quite Egyptian robots, and partials for armored space knights and lady armored space knights. The Patreon released the second wave of space samurai aliens (with drones to boot) this month, and there's going to be at least 3 more Grimdark Future armies coming out this year. On the Fantasy side of things, there's a version of the Imperials as seen through a Leonardi DaVinci filter, some really nice undead Egyptians, and a nearly complete Aztec/Mayan Reptilian force that will be wrapped up later this year. The Beastmen are currently coming out, and appear to be hyena men, smilodon men, centaurs, and cyclopes. Each army has one or two giant sized units (which appear to be rewards for staying with the Patreon for 3 or 6 months in a row). So for folks who want to get in, but don't want want to go into debt to get an army, this is an excellent option.
@@tjans1979 OPA, the guy that runs OPR, put a lot of the old models into some sort archive mode. That includes the Battle Bros, the Battle Sisters, the Havoc Debils, and the Dwerfs. They are releasing Havoc Debils this year, and will probably get around to the rest before long.
The more I see of these rules the more I like them. However the master stroke (other developers take note) is providing proxy lists for "other manufacturer's" figures. It means anyone with an existing force of figures can adopt the rules without having to adopt a new army.
Introduced my gaming group to Grimdark Future recently, and we love it. It's a wonderful way to dust off the old 40K armies and get them fighting on the tabletop again. We had all given up on 40K due to the ridiculous rules bloat of recent editions; we're so happy to be using our miniature collections in a game that's easy, streamlined, and fun to play. Not to mention---FREE.
Grimdark Future is all the good bits of 40K with none of the useless crap. It's for playing a fun game of space army men pew pew with the boys, throwing some dice and getting all the flavors of our favourite sci-fi universe.

The One Page Rules game systems (all of them) are going through a beta test of version 2.5 of the rules, which includes optional force organization rules. For casual games, you're free to ignore those rules so you can play with the models you have handy. But for tournaments, there are recommended restrictions like no more than one hero model per 500 points in your army. I can't find the current version of the 2.5 beta rules off-hand, so I can't be more specific than that, but just wanted to let you know those are coming, since you mentioned the absence of force organization rules in Grimdark Future.
OPR have brilliant game systems I love them, they are brilliant! Can make games longer or shorter with more rules to add as you please as well, it really helps to mix it up big time. Their Pateron is well worth it espicelly if you have or are going to get a 3D Printer.
Thanks for the video. Grimdark Future also has its skirmish version Grimdark Future: Firefight. It may be a proxy for Kill Team or (with Gang Wars rules from dull rulebook) Necromunda.

I played and collected 40K from 4th edition until early 7th... got tired of chasing the ever revolving book purchases.... Still play some 6th/7th edition sometimes.. Also got into 2018 Kill Team, and really enjoyed that game... haven't bought into the new version of Kill Team... yet... was contemplating it this winter, to have more than 1 or 2 opponents... but, I am really tempted to just get stuck in for this winter with Grimdark Future Firefight, and likely Grimdark Future instead of 40K...we could still take inspiration from the GW stuff for missions, etc... and I will always read the novels and such... Thanks for the content! I think I'm going to join the Patreon for a while and give it a real try once summer is done... Cheers!
Big fan of Grimdark Future, a lot of people try to say GW is finished or we don't need them anymore, I think not, I bought an entire Ork army just for Grimdark Future lol.
I have a good 3d printer and I know how to use it.. I absolutely do not need GW since there are stl sculpts which are just as nice as theirs and I can print whole squads off on demand in a few hours for around 10-20% the cost of comparable GW models..
Have a 4th edition army that took a lot of time and effort to put together. I began the update for 5th, but nobody from my group played. 8th did pull some back, but the games were overly complex ( How many books?). My group now plays OPR, and after reading them, I quite literally blew the dust off of my army boxes.
Looking forward to seeing some of this in play on the tabletop. And maybe some kind of comparison to Space Weirdos for that "not-40k" 40k fun factor? Like a "who does it best?"
Wyloch's Armory has a great rundown of the basic rules, and a number of Battle Reports on his channel. There's some other videos on RU-vid, but Wyloch's videos are easier for me to watch.
Space Weirdos is very much a skirmish game, with (very) small warbands, while Grimdark Future is an army-level game, with models organized into units that move as a group, so that would be a very apples-to-oranges comparison. Space Weirdos would be more aptly compared to Grimdark Future: Firefight, which is OPR's SF skirmish game, or to games from other publishers, like Stargrave, Star Breach, or Planet 28 (all of which are very much worth checking out!).
for imperial guard in 40k the current faction name is astra militarium and rough riders don't have rules in the codex but do have rules in a legands pdf (or you use the forge world imperial armour compendium to get the better rules version of cavalry
