Dan, The exact article is evading me right now but Subaru of America made a statement about a year ago saying that the OEM crank pulley is NOT a harmonic balance. Quite a few people make this assumption because there is rubber used in its manufacturing process. Our pulley isn't as light as some of the other ones out there. We intentionally made it slightly heavier as to not run into mis-fire issues if someone is running a lightened flywheel. -Matt Homes

Just finished installation on my 04' STi. Took me two hours, including the time spent to go get a second breaker bar. Should also be noted that I wouldn't consider myself "experienced" lol. This is a great and very easy to install mod, especially with the video.

My Subaru dealer only charged me about 50 dollars to install this, saved me from buying any tools or messing it up. Been running it for about 5 years now on my 2013 WRX and no issues. The biggest thing I noticed right away was how much smoother the car seemed to idle while at stop lights and such.

I have not seen anyone suggest the obvious, remove the fan and radiator to give your self more space to work ... it does not take long and it's really easy.

Omg I'm such an idiot Haha I'm at work at the moment but tonight I will do that. I'll let you know how it turns out. I did tighten it down but it wasn't in gear so it wasn't tightened to torque specs and I did install the belts afterwards. I should've worded it better. Thanks!

Chris, Our pulley is compatible with all EJ series engines, it will work great on your 2.2l. Let me know if there are any other questions I can answer for you. -Matt Homes

Mike, are you sure you are torquing the crank pulley down to 96 ft lbs? You install the belts after the pulley has been torqued down. You will either need to put the car in gear or use a crank pulley tool to achieve this torque specification.

Our GrimmSpeed light weight crank pulley works on all EJ series engines, so it should work on your Forester just fine as long as you have an EJ motor. -Matt Homes

If you are referencing the pulley in relation to the crank it will only fit on one way. There is a key way that aligns the pulley. If this isn't what you are asking let me know. -Matt Homes

I've been thinking of buying this crank pulley and then swapping it instead of my old one. And here is what concerns me a little. I was told and also read on the Internet that replacing old1 to a lighter may create problems especially if you often drive in a city, traffics jams, often stops due to traffics lights and so on. In other words a new crank pulley is good foe driving on long distances off any cities. Is it correct? Thank you.

Dan, This is definitely a option, some people don't feel comfortable doing this though. Also, on auto vehicle the crank pulley removal can't be accomplished this way, you need a tool whether it be ours or someone else's. -Matt Homes

if you spin the crankshaft, wouldnt that mess up the the piston set up? or do you just set it back to dead center?

Question for Grimm speed vender. What is the difference between your crank pulley compare to Cobb and Perrin. I have a Perrin crank pulley but I just put the stock crack pulley. I'm being told that the stock crack pulley has a harmonic balancer. Am your crank, Cobb and Perrin don't have it. Which could cause vibration and messing up your oil pump and bearing.

I just put my car in 5th, ebrake set and gave the breaker bar a little pull to make sure the pulley wouldn't go counter clockwise. It did a little bit and I turned it slightly back clockwise. What could happen here? What should I do at this point? Any ideas why the pulley turned back? Any help is much appreciated.

Some states don't allow the modification of a vehicleand or limit to only certain modifications. We use this statement so that the consumer knows its intended use. This will work just fine on a daily driver, just verify with the state you reside in that they modifications are not prohibited. -Matt H.

"Off road us only" is listed on the product because many states have different laws about vehicle modification and emissions. It is more straight forward to make this statement then to try to list out states that the product may may not pass a vehicle inspection. -Matt Homes

I noticed in the beginning that you loosen the idler pulley, but when replacing both belts in the end, it's no longer there. Did you remove it altogether or was the reinstallation of it done after this vid? Can the car be used without it? I just ordered a crank pulley and idler pulley to replace them both in my 2004 Sub Forester.

the installation was done on a model which did not have the tensioner, if you have a tensioner it will make installation easier as you don't need to do the method shown

Hey Brian, You probably just turned the engine which shouldn't be a problem. If you're overly concerned you may want to take off your timing cover and confirm that the marks are still lined up. Mike

It's good to note that 94 ft lbs is for WRX applications. STI requires 133 ft lbs.

I don't think it is necessary to disconnect the battery for this job. But you can if you feel more comfortable doing so.

Hi,I have a 2004 wrx with a light weight flywheel,I have purchased one of your lower pulleys but I have yet too Instal it,but you guys mentioned in yvid that if you have a lightweight flywheel and you install the lightweight pulley it puts the timing out,is that correct?

It really depends on the weight of the LWFW, our pulleys are deliberately made to be a little heavier so that they don't throw codes from the combination. The best way is to install it and see if the ECU reacts.

Faster way to loosed the cranks pulley is to put your car on 5 gears, ebrake up. Get a 22mm socket and a breaker bar.

This doesn’t work if the rubber has failed and the outer ring is slipping.

The crank pulley most likely won't be scrutinized like changes to emission, exhaust systems are. I cannot promise you this, if you are still concerned, check your local statutes.

theres a lot of pulley..usually people change light weight crank pulley..its make better performence n responce..increase about 5%-10% power for ur engine..crank pulley is at belting air con..i change my crank pulley yesterday n i can feel the different.. @PUNKaZZBEACH

The engine was rotated? I never saw it being rotated. The timing belt was never removed also.

sniffinwhitelines Subarus have an internal timing system from the crank to both halves of the heads on opposite sides of each other. There is a timing belt behind those plastic covers behind the crank pulley. The crank pulley is not timed to the cams. No retiming is therefore required.

Hello, My guess is this is internet hearsay and not fact. We have seen no issues associated with the installation of this pulley. Stop and go traffic should be improved as the motor will respond and rev more freely. Mike

you could just put your car in gear and chock the wheels to break loose the pulley bolt. dont need to spend money on that tool.

Chad, Are you running the stock fans or aftermarket ones? You should be able to do the install with your fans on the radiator, but you can remove them if they are hard to work around. Let me know if this helps, if not give me a call (612-379-0000) and I can walk you through it. -Matt Homes
