Interviewee(s): Angela Duckworth
Watch Angela Duckworth talk about her research on grit and inter-disciplinary research in human capital. She is the co-leader of the Identity and Personality Network.
Angela Duckworth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She studies individual differences that predict achievement. Her research centers on self-control (the ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and feelings in the service of valued goals) and grit (perseverance and sustained interest in long-term goals). In prospective, longitudinal studies, she documents the relationships among self-control, grit, and intelligence, and their prediction of academic and professional achievement.

Salman Khan of Khan Academy has said that their format is great because teachers can measure persistence of students over time. Plus, it allows students to learn at their own pace. This allows for much higher efficiency than lectures, and it's a lot more fun.

Why not just call it perseverance? Serious question is it just to be catchy?

From what I know of grit, the answer is because perseverance is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for grit. Grit, as Duckworth defines it, also requires some sort of passion. So, if I am learning biochemistry in order to satisfy a college requirement but have little interest in it, and I persevere through the course, that isn't per se enough to keep me motivated outside of the extrinsic reward of my grade. What Duckworth is interested in is the type of perseverance that happens when one is also passionate about what one is doing such that extrinsic motivators either matter little or not at all toward one's willingness to persevere.
