The memories I have from there are unforgettable. My funniest being, my friend and I swimming down to the window in the deep end, making funny faces at the folks looking into the pool.

I use to go there every summer in the early 70's until the early 80's.... what wonderful times those were..... all the great entertainers, the dancing, the food etc.... it was glorious being there.... now there are the memories..... and it's so sad to see it abandoned like this.... such a majestic place with a horrible end.... makes me want to cry for the loss of a beautiful and grand place. Also went to the Concord (which was larger than Grossinger's) and is now defunct also. Only the memories are left.

I have families that still live in Liberty and Monticello. I was just there in March visiting. (2015)My aunt was just talking to me about the Grossingers hotel. I use to baby sit in the early 70's and took swimming lessons in the indoor pool... Those were the days.... Many beautiful memories!!!!! I now live in Orlando..

As a child growing up in Brooklyn, NY I spent many a summer at this resort with my family. Your images and the music was so bitter sweet. Grossinger's was a special get away that brought happiness to so many. It's so sad to see that it is now nothing but a decaying mass.

I just recently started reading up about the “borscht belt” after hearing about it on a Seinfeld documentary. I live in West Virginia and had no clue about the Catskills. I have found it VERY interesting and sad that something so wonderful and successful is now gone. The Catskills sounds like it was amazing! And the history and culture goes to show just what can be accomplished in America! I just wish I could go back in time and witness just one day of the food, entertainment, and the feel of being family to everyone.

Your video truly does this old resort justice; you are a great artist; your eye for detail is very sharp, I recently stumbled across your video's because I love to watch urban exploration, it's clear to me now, that the others are just trying to copy your work, they don't even come close.

my grandfather bought a place right outside of liberty (white sulphur springs) in 1962....i have been going up there since im a baby and i still go there now...i was there 2 weeks ago....its very sad to see what liberty and sullivan county has turned into...i wasnt around in the 70's as im to yung but i remember the 80's and 90's when it was a place people wanted to go....i still love it there because we have 30 acres and i enjoy peace and quiet...but there is absolutely nothing around anymore, main street is boarded up and every businees is suffering ..almost every house is for sale and its very poor.....taxes are extremely high compared to surrounding counties and all the old timers are gone...main street is full of shady lookin people up to no good......i usually go to jeffersonville or livingston manor to shop....its very sad to see Grossingers this way....last i heard they turned it into a golf course

Being in my late forties and having spent the 1979-80 school year in Liberty, I'm just old enough to remember the tail end of the town's prosperity. My brother and I learned how to ice skate at Grossingers, and we look back fondly on being taken shopping at Sullivan's. It saddens me to see Liberty in such a prolonged state of decline, and that nobody was able to come up with a plan to keep Grossingers viable.

Walter, you did such an amazing job photographing the VASTness of the property, I return to view this regularly. 4 years ago I referred to this piece as my aural and visual crack and still feel the same. You have virgin photographs, prior to the ugly vandalization and tagging that took place. How sad to think this beautiful icon no longer stands. Be well. -Suzanne

My parents, sister and brother went here in late 70's, maybe very early 80's. My Dad is a magician and the resort paid for all of us to come up for I think it was like 5 or 6 days, very nice place in its heyday. He did shows there and we had a blast. I was 12 or 13 at the time, now I am 46. It is so sad to see this place in ruins. maybe they could renovate and turn it into housing?

I grew up in the Catskills and when I was a kid I hated it! The only time there was anything to do was in the summers when the people from the city would come up for the summers there are a lot more hotels with history in those mountains even a castle that my grandfather help build just outside my home town if Roscoe as I get older now and living in sw fla I miss those mountains sometimes!😢 it truly is a shame to go home and see just how much things have changed! I’ve been all over the world and truly have to say there is something Magical about those mountains I use to live in

Doubt they will do a casino in the Catskill's. ANY new casino's in New York will be thought out, very carefully. The market is saturated. They've shut several in Jersey, because of competition in PA. If they do build, it would probably be closer to NYC. Talks and Big plans have been the rule of the day for 30 years. Talk is cheap and if you can pull in a million simply putting together a plan- There you go. Make money on making plans, not actually building and running a huge eyesore.
@StopMotionReviewer1
@StopMotionReviewer1 10 лет назад
the thing is that the locals need something to do, not the tourists. how about instead of making us a tourist attraction, you make us a community. teenagers their families need something to do here, not casinos and gimmicks.

Grossinger's was definitely among the grande dames of that area, along with the Concord and Kutsher's. There was even a Grossinger's brand rye bread you could purchase in the supermarket. I think that's how I first learned of them. Kutsher's, by the way, remains open. If I ever again visit the Catskills, I plan to drop by.

Hi, thats a really good video and sad. I grew up and live in the catskills and there are so many of these places just falling into decay it's a shame. This used to be THE place for people to come with there family on vacation. There's still a few of the catskill resorts left tho. I work at the one that was called "The Granit" but they renamed it now. Some of the people i work with used to work at grossingers, and the other big resorts. All abandoned now. They have great stories to tell.
