the body cannot live without the soul.. but the soul can live forever without the body this movie has more meaning than we thought. in many ways i couldn't stop thinking about God and the love that we receive from him few know that True Love knows no hate or sorrow.. loving without expecting to be loved.. even if you cannot have what you love, if you trully love it.. you will forever

Notice when Rita says "I could never love someone like you Phil, because you'll never love anyone but yourself". Of course she is totally wrong - like many people are - because he hates himself. This wonderful movie is a deep exploration of what it means to improve yourself and achieve real self esteem.
@jimpemberton

Bingo. And it's related to the groundhog who keeps coming out, seeing his shadow, and going back in the hole while it stays winter. One day the groundhog (Phil) comes out and stays out and it becomes spring. This is Phil's coming-out day.
@ashscott6068
@ashscott6068 2 года назад
But it's hardly an inspiration. I mean...Phil had NO CHOICE! He was put in a situation that made the changes inevitable. Everyone would become selfless if they were stuck with their self in the same town on the same day, over and over, for years

There's been a couple college courses built around this movie because of the theme and interreflection and time scale involved in how long Phil would have been caught in the time loop distortion. As far as the triggering of the time loop onset is really irrelevant but more importantly is how to break time loop. The time scales could be decades to possible thousands of years. Phil mastered a number of skills and possible met the and learned about 6500 citizens of Punxsutawney along with numerous other festival attendees.

Interviews with the co-writer/director Harold Ramis (who cameo'ed as the doctor reading the x-rays; also was one of the original Ghostbusters in the films of the same name) said there was nothing that 'caused' the time loop and nothing Phil did to cause it to stop. It was just an anomaly that happened to him. What he does during that loop has no effect on his being in it, how long it lasted, or it stopping. Another interesting link to the actors is the Grand Marshal of the event, who pulls out the groundhog and interprets whether he saw his shadow. That Grand Marshal (whose truck gets stolen by Phil and who Phil saves from choking in the restaurant) is played by Bill Murray's older brother Brian Doyle-Murray (pronounced MERR-ree, rhymes with 'hurry'). Groundhog Day is a tradition in a couple of mid-Atlantic states in the US, but Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is the best known of this one-day festival. Here's why: It's a German custom brought over by the Hessians who came to the US Colonies to fight in the Revolutionary War. The Hessians stayed after the founding of the United States and settled nearby. Since the 1st US capitol was Philadelphia, 'nearby' was in Pennsylvania. The custom brought over by the Hessians from Germany was from the badger seeing his shadow. But the US has no badgers. The nearest animals to the underground-living badger is the underground-living groundhog, a large rodent related to beavers. (The physical difference between beavers and groundhogs is mostly the tail, which on beavers is like a big paddle. Also Beavers live in built lodges in the water.) Personally, I have often wondered if there was any relationship between groundhogs/badgers/bears coming out of their underground dens toward spring and the Greek/Roman myth of Persephone, who is required to return underground to live with Hades/Pluto for 3 months of the year, during which time her mother Ceres in mourning ceases to make the world warm and fruitful and green.

This film is very much like the original TV show The Twilight Zone in the sense that there's no explanation of why it's happening, it just allows the viewer to sink into the hypothetical situation that is meant to inspire you to contemplate the meaning of the moral of the story. Giving a reason for why it happened would be a waste of time and a distraction to the purpose of the story. The greatest thing about this film is that I don't know a single person who has seen it and has ever forgotten it or it's lesson. It may be a new film to you but trust me, you will have a reason to say something about this movie 20 years from now and 40 years from now. I saw it in the movie theater when it first came out and all these years later, I'm watching you watch it for the first time because I wanted to relive that first time again. Irony. I got you babe.

The "Groundhog Day" tradition comes from Germans who settled in Western Pennsylvania. In Germany, it's with hedgehogs, and on Candlemas Day (Feb.2) they watch if the hedgehog sees their shadow. In America, they switched to groundhogs. The groundhog is called a marmot in Europe, and also commonly called a woodchuck in most of North America.

Bill Murray having a field day with his first mix of comedy and drama - a near perfect film- you nailed it when you said he's trying to be the best person he can be - and that is the core of it all (and of all of us). While the film has been lauded as a metaphysical and even spiritual /religious film - the filmmakers real intent was to make an absurd high concept into a genuinely funny film. Directed by the late, great Harold Ramis (who cameos as the doctor Phil sees) who collaborated with Bill in CADDYSHACK, STRIPES & of course GHOSTBUSTERS (all must sees) and sadly their last film together (on the set of this film Bill was very contentious to the point Harold called him on it and it began a rift until Ramis passed away but luckily the duo made up just before he died). Nice job on your reactions. Hope you do more Murray films (I'd also include RUSHMORE, LOST IN TRANSLATION, BROKEN FLOWERS & SCROOGED).

Andie McDowell is such a great actress!The choking guy is Bill's brother! He's in most Bill's movies. Ironically, he's the one that started acting first, and Bill got a little jealous, and followed him into acting! I think the calculation is, getting as good as he was at everything, he was here about 30 years! The doctor is Harold Ramis. Also the director here, and writer costar and director in Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Stripes, he helped write Caddyshack, and also bill Murray's summer camp movie! The odd thing is, as good as they were together, Ramis hated bill's guts!!Some things...how did the old man recognize him? How was his days advancing? How did he keep dying in different ways? Why did Phil call him dad and Pop? Why did the bartender seem to know something? Best line in the movie,"yes, but my dad was a piano mover....so..." I think the catalyst wasn't that he completely changed and had one totally unselfish day, I think it was Rita. When she bid on him, EVERYTHING she had, it was her putting out into the universe, I'ma give everything I have, to keep this guy

Another Christmas movie is Scrooge (1970 musical version with Albert Finney) one of the rare film versions that show Ebenezer Scrooge in Hell. Let It Ride- Richard Dreyfuss film about horse betting and racing. Not to be taken seriously. Tongue in cheek outrageous comedy. The Monster Squad-a Halloween film about a group of teenagers trying to stop an assortment of Universal Studios classic Monsters from ruling the world. Comedic horror. My Blue Heaven is a Gangster in witness protection movie, outrageous comedy, not to be taken seriously. Hey guys, love your movie reactions a lot. You two are adorable and watch incredible films. Glad you saw Groundhod Day. It's an amazing film...watch it again and again and again and again! Lol just kidding, but ill give you a little hint. A little clue if you will...this film isn't really what you think it means. It's even better than that.

I think it's cool that the cause of the loop wasn't explained. It's like a romantic story from the Twilight Zone.

Love movies where no explanation is given. Just accept that it is happening and enjoy it. Another movie that I watch again and again (ironically). Also, love the choice of "I got You Babe" to kick off each new (is that the right word) day.

It's better that the loop is not explained... it would detract from the message of the story. Besides, the why isnt important, it's how he deals with it.

dunno if ya'all noticed but the guy that Phil saves from chocking in the restaurant is actually Bill Murray's brother Brian. Brian played the asshole boss in Christmas Vacation.

The scene where his last ex cursed him that he would never find love until he was worthy of love was cut from the script. It's estimated that he relived Groundhog Day for about 34 years. Please watch Bill Murray from this & Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws) in What About Bob? Also Rita (Andie McDowell) in Green Card.

The subtitles spelled it wrong. "It's a Duesey!" It is a statement that a thing is exceptional or excellent in quality and comes from when Duesenberg automobiles were being made.

I think that time stopped so he could change and when he reformed he was truly happy and then life went on.

In the original script there was a deleted scene at the beginning of the movie where he broke up with a gf who went to a witch or something like that and put a curse on him to be stuck on his most hated day Groundhog Day till he fell in love

Fun fact it’s my understanding this movie caused a big rift between him and Harold Remus and for that reason alone he would not do another Gustbuster movie till after his passing

This story was originally supposed to last 10,000 years. The movie doesn’t make it clear, but that is the idea behind the nightmare either way.

The screenwriter’s initial plan was to have Connors trapped in the time loop for several millennia. The original script contains a final confession by Connors to his love interest Rita that “I’ve been waiting for you every day for ten thousand years.” But since both scrapped and how much time main character spent in time loop remains in mystery, people started doing their own calculations. One obssessive website calculated he spent 34 years acquiring skills that shown which includes learning french, ice sculpture, piano etc

You're right that the time line is now ambiguous and there is no single correct answer, but it was certainly multiple decades that he spent there.
