FIRST TIME WATCHING * Groundhog Day (1993) * MOVIE REACTION!! 

Never laughed so hard watching any/all the other YT Reactors to this movie than watching Ash & Hannah's!

My favorite fact about this movie is that Harold Ramis, the director (also cameod as the doctor), knew Bill Murray well enough to know he gets burned out as production goes on, so it was actually filmed in reverse, with his happiest scenes first and his more douchey scenes from the first part of the movie were filmed last. Also, the scene where he tries to save the old man over and over just breaks my heart because it shows that even though you have all the time in the world, some things you just can't change.

It's NOT A BEAVER IT'S A GROUNDHOG.

I like how tickled Hannah is by this movie while Ash is just Phil.

This movie is about intentional kindness and incremental change. It’s not about Phil falling into love. Anyone can do that. It’s about him choosing acts of kindness and not because he thinks it’s the way out. He only breaks the loop when he is fundamentally changed because he’s choosing to not just be a good person, but to actively participate in his own life and the lives around him, as a force for true good. It ends because he’s given up on getting out. He’s living, truly, in the moment because it’s all he has. The loop goes on for years and years. It’s a pretty profound meditation on people and the affect we have on each other.

Ash is the embodiment of pre-salvation Phil and Hannah is the embodiment of post-salvation Phil lololololol

I have NEVER seen someone react to this movie without knowing that the same day repeats over and over!!! Their reactions to the "second" groundhog day morning are PURE CLASS 🤣🤣🤣

It’s not about honesty. It’s about growth. Phil looks down on EVERY single person he ever met, except the one he loves. He condescends. He belittles. And she just can’t fall in love with that. It takes maybe 40 years for his conceit to die.

Filmed in my hometown of Woodstock, Illinois. When he looks out his B&B window every recurring morning that was my folks' house third on the right. This movie means so much to me and I'm always heartened to see the effect it has on others; great reaction here as always!

I would watch a video of Ash & Hannah hanging out in a small midwestern town 😂 Ash would be sooooo confused about why everyone is so friendly and trying to feed him constantly while Hannah would end up adopted by wholesome local grandparents or something.

Watching ash going from not liking/caring for the movie. To how invested he was at the end had me chuckling.

The insane part is that this is a REAL place and a REAL holiday in the US. All of us here think it's completely crazy but it keeps going. Funny part is, people go to this town at like 5am in February and get absolutely wasted to wait for a damn groundhog, lol.

This movie always reminds me of the following: I'd guess about 10 years ago, I was coming off my night job at Walmart. I'd been through some very rough times and was suffering from depression. I'd stopped to get myself a sausage biscuit at McDonald's (they had one inside the store) before heading out to my car. The sun was up already, and the parking lot was filled with hundreds if not thousands of birds... And for some reason, two birds fighting over a piece of paper came to my attention. Suddenly, my heart was filled with pity for the little birds; fighting over a scrap of paper just yards (meters to you) away from a store filled with food... in fact, we'd had shopping carts filled with food that had to be thrown away because it had expired or been damaged. So I was going to take the sausage out of my biscuit (I guess you might call it a dinner roll or something) and throw the bread part to the little birds, when I got an inspiration. I went back inside to where I'd passed a display rack full of french bread loafs that were about to expire, and so were on sale for $1 (about 3/4 of a pound, I guess). I went back outside and for about 15 minutes I threw bread pieces to the birds. It was amazing seeing the seagulls (we're about a thousand miles from the nearest coast) spill air out from under their wings and maneuver to snatch a piece out of the air. And I would talk to the wrens and the blackbirds... "hey, share!" ... "Hang on, mrs, I'll coming to you"... "okay, I gotta turn and feed these guys some now"... I then got in my car and drove home... feeling genuinely happy for the first time in maybe a couple years. After that, I would buy a large package of chewing gum, or boxes of candy canes... and just hand them out at random at work, offering them to my coworkers. When a young co-worker was debating over buying her little boy a bike or several other things he wanted for Christmas... I bought the bike for her (on behalf of Father Christmas, of course!) so she could get him the other things. I would wait at McDonald's after getting my breakfast, and buy the next person in line's order for him/her/them. It culminated in my plans to go to a Lindsey Stirling Christmas concert. I'd saved up all year and paid $300 for the top tier meet-and-greet tickets. (yeah, I wasn't making much money at Walmart, but then I was just a glorified janitor, so...) "Black Friday" is the Friday after Thanksgiving, when all the stores have extreme sale prices. As I worked nights, I asked my store manager if I could shop at black Friday prices. He said I could. See, at the concert they were going to have a "Toys for Tots" drive, which is where the U.S. Marine Corps collects toys for little children (I believe it was originally the children of servicemen who'd died in service). So I was going to shop for a donation (you got an autographed photo for donating, which I didn't care about, anyway...) I went up and down the toy aisles, filling my cart with toys; a giant bear, a musical keyboard and other items I thought little kids might like. Going up and down those aisles, I was filled with a joy I hadn't felt in a very long time. In fact, I had to force myself to stop or I wasn't going to be able to pay rent that month. I won't go into the details, but I made the donations at the concert, feeling really good... then got sick, and had to miss the actual concert. But I'll always remember how happy I felt shopping for those toys. See, I'd been lied to all my life. I'd been taught that you had to be generous and give to others in order to be a good person. Seemed like a high price to pay to be a "good person" to me. Bunch of self-serving egotism, in my view. Nobody had told me that giving to others could give one such happiness, such joy, such contentment. So now I'm a more generous person... for purely selfish reasons.

i've read that groundhog day actually was in replay for 33 years and 350 days for him, imagine that 🤯🤯

Harold Ramis was a genius. One of the last philosopher comics that really had the talent to get his idea through without it coming across like a thesis paper.

I never thought about how much it would mean to Phil to live there afterwards. He knows every person in town intimately, he knows everything about that town as if he's lived there for decades (because he has!), it's more of a hometown to him than any place he's ever been. He likes the people there and a lot of them appreciate him now too. And now that time is flowing again, he's excited to see what's going to happen next in all of these people's lives, because he genuinely cares for them. How could he ever go back to his regular home area where he only knows a few people? If I was him I would insist on living there, I couldn't even consider living anywhere else.

We know from an early script draft - the idea stems from the Buddhist ideology that it takes 10,000 years to perfect the human soul. Once Phil perfected his soul, he was freed from the curse. This 10,000 years to betterment was confirmed by director Harold Ramis (RIP).

The piano teacher can’t say that she’s the teacher… she’s only seen him for ONE day! He’s a pianist on that day!

The movie was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. Reasons being Woodstock is 1 hour from Chicago when Punxsutawney is 2 hours from Pittsburgh and both Murray and Ramious had local family. Gobblers Knob is not in town. It's outside of town, and the site can accommodate over 20k people and over a dozen TV and radio teams. The Groundhog has a zoo type enclosure he and his "wife" live in that is part of the town's library in the central park. Murray, Ramious and staff came to Punxsutawney for the Groundhog Day prior to starting filing. They talked with people, took photos and left with about a quarter script in rewrites.

I love the moment when Bill Murray is lost in his book and forgets himself, looking around at the other people in the cafe to share the moment. That's happened to me. Reading something awesome and realizing that you were the only person who enjoyed that special moment.

The original script contains a final confession by Connors to his love interest Rita that “I've been waiting for you every day for ten thousand years.” A line from an early draft of the Groundhog Day screenplay in which the character of Phil Connors admits to being trapped in a time loop for 10,000 years.

I think the lesson for Hannah is that she thought she knew who her father was, but now she really knows who her father is because of this movie

More than a few of us noticed how COVID was becoming like a real life Groundhog Day.

How is the film gonna be called Groundhog Day, yet you constantly call it a beaver?

My favorite Bill Murray centered movie of all time ! Despite its troubled production they still managed to make a fantastic film.

This film is art because it makes you not just watch and have fun, but think and reflect. What distinguishes a person from an animal. This is an allegory and miniature of the life of any person locked in the routine of endless and meaningless vanity - the pursuit of status, material things, the opinions of strangers... Sincere self-love and respect (not vanity), self-development (unimposed real dreams and goals) and unconditional help to other people helps spiritual growth and fill life with harmony and true happiness. Every time I see Bill Murray I feel an excruciating pain in my heart... My uncle E. died in 2006 and they could have been twins. My uncle E. will never get old though...

To me, this movie has always been a representation on Elizabeth KublerRoss’s 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance). It’s a theory of emotions for death but maybe can be applied to giving up old habits or attitude (dying) and adopting new more healthy ones (acceptance). I don’t know but it’s a great movie and reaction.

one time me and my buddies was so high, we put this movie on, and was laughing so uncontrolably hard, finally when we caught our breath, we realized that the openint credits hadnt even finished yet.

Someone did the math on how long it would take to be an expert on all of these things that Phil ended up doing in the movie. It turns out that he was probably stuck for around 34 years. Adding an edit: Yeah, him being freed is all about the line at 23:09 - "I could never love someone like you Phil, because you'll never love anyone but yourself." Him being freed is all about being selfless and giving to all those around him.

“Don’t drive angry! Don’t drive angry!” My family and I still say that to each other when we’re in the car and something shitty happens. We love this movie, I grew up on it. And it’s weird being from America seeing people from another country probably thinking how fucking weird ground hog day must be 😂

I think you guys would LOVE the 2001 film 'What Women Want' with Mel Gibson. Super underrated romantic comedy with an equally interesting premise.

According to Harold Ramis, getting Rita WAS the win-condition for Phil to get out of the loop😊. As to how long he was in there... Ramis suggested 30-40 YEARS.

In the first Ash reaction that I watched, I thought "This guy reminds me of someone, but who...." Now I realize it was Phil, from the first half of this movie. Ash needs to meet the Groundhog.

Easily my favorite movie, it hits you from so many angles. The diner scene where he describes the place she used to hide to be alone always makes me tear up. Andy does a great job conveying the feeling of suddenly being completely exposed and the terrifying joy of someone actually knowing you that well. It was really fun watching you guys kind of figure the movie out.

When you live alone for years (post-mid-crisis), this film perfectly captured it, you'll be facing the same thing on a daily basis but yes, there are some days that will differ but it'll just resume to what it was...However, there's a message (or a symbolism) in this film, that it's YOU that can change to how you want to conduct your day...Talk to people, build relationship, challenge yourself, find something meaningful, and simply enjoy your life.

Man your back and forth with jokes really makes every reaction enjoyable. Also i love this movie. Such original premise for its time.

Hannah is really good at predicting next scenes. She pretty much calls the next thing to happen the whole movie.

Okay, now you have to watch the Tom Cruise action/scifi movie "EDGE OF TOMORROW" (aka "LIVE DIE REPEAT), because it's basically the same stiory - but with an alien invasion!

The amount of time that Phil spends in the loop has been much discussed, but the most precise number I've heard in 37 years. I've also seen 70-80 years.

But YOU, spent a whole lifetime there already.. --- That bed and breakfast is a real place and it really is on Cherry Street, Woodstock, Illinois.. ---- The producers used Woodstock because it had a slightly better appeal than Punxsutawney .

Honestly, I never expected the two of you to react to this movie. It's one of those films that a lot of reactors tend to skip over for a long time. So this was quite a surprise. And it's a fantastic surprise. I love this movie, and I'm glad that the two of you seemed to enjoy it as well. Thanks, you two. Keep on being brilliant.

I tried telling my wife being with her was like Groundhog Day, as in the love story and finally being happy but she did NOT take it that way.

The guy who wrote the original screenplay said Phil is stuck in Groundhog Day for thousands of human years. The film's message is pretty clear. If you're a bitter and arrogant person, you're stuck in a hell of your own making, doomed to a repetitive existence where nothing will ever really go your way. Even if you do manage to "win" (shagging Nancy/decking Ned/stealing the money) you'll still be stuck with yourself and your misery when you wake up the next day. It's only when Phil starts concentrating on other people and his own betterment that he breaks the cycle. This film is great, and is very rewatchable.

There's a deleted scene where Phil's ex-girlfriend he just broke up with cursed him. He had to completely change himself to break the curse. The original concept story was Phil was trapped for 10,000 years. They brought it down for the official story, but it was still something like 30 years.

Ash is so funny and Hannah is so adorable and love her sensitivity this is one of my favourite movie of all time great reaction ❤

You are the first people that I've seen that haven't grown up with Groundhog Day. In America this takes place on February 2nd and supposedly determines how much longer winter will last. Everyone thinks it's stupid but it is tradition. If you were assigned covering this event you probably would react like Bill Murray did.

For someone who's always calling out symbolism, it's amazing that Ash missed the symbolism that Phil is literally the groundhog. Whenever the groundhog sees his shadow, he runs back into his hole until winter is over. Phil keeps waking up very morning, sees his shadow (i.e. he acts like an a-hole) and then runs back into his hole (i.e. re-lives the same day). Only on the day that he no longer sees his shadow (i.e. becomes a genuinely good person) does winter end (i.e. he stops re-living the same day).

The actor who played "Buster".....the official who read the scroll at the morning event and was saved by Bill Murrsy while choking, is Bill's brother, Brian Doyle-Murray. They are together in a few movies like...."Caddy Shack".

Great movie, you should check out "Palm Springs" basically a newer version of this but still different. and super funny!

The man that Phil saved from choking in the restaurant, is actually Bill Murray’s real life brother, Brian Doyle Murray.

Funny watching how far off they are at the beginning. This movie passes the "I would watch it again" test.

This is the type of feel-good stuff we should flood Hannah with. Other feel-good movies I might recommend are Blast from the Past, Tommy Boy, Happy Gilmore, Heavyweights, Grumpy Old Men, and, if you want to feel sexy, The Full Monty.

Delighted that my favorite “Reactors” got to this movie. This movie had a great message!! Another great comedy from the 80’s that almost nobody has watched is “Multiplicity.” Andy McDowel is in it as well!

On the one hand Hannah correctly predicts the outcome of numerous movies 10 minutes in… on the other the movie is called Groundhog Day and she goes “omg look at this town it has a beaver as its mascot”. This channel is undefeated

I love how Ash said he wasn't really into this film in the first few minutes, but by 35:30 when the "Day" ended, he was cheering along with Hannah! This shows just what a great film this is, and how it really draws you into the narrative. It's one of my favourite films of all time because it weaves so much into one script - comedy, tragedy, self-development, philosophy, romance - the lot.

A fun comedy gem not talked about as often as it deserves.

There have been people that have wrote papers on this movie. How long did he relive this same day, was Ned actually the devil? Was the old man a Christ figure? Just think how long it would take you to know everyone in a town, their entire background, how to play piano, how to ice sculpt, how to speak French. It’s not just a year or so it a lot of years.

I love this movie! Director Harold Ramis, commenting on the premise in a special feature of the movie, estimated that Phil was stuck in the time loop for about 10 years! You guys should react to the shows, "Breaking Bad", "Better Call Saul", and "PREACHER"!

The director Harold Ramis (R.I.P) has remarked that Phil's time loop lasted a minimum of 20 years, but was closer to 40 years. There was a deleted scene where Phil reads one page a day from a book he's checked out in the library. He does this until he's read every book in the library to measure his time.

The bed and breakfast is a real place that you can stay... I believe it's called the Cherry Tree Inn.. -- Woodstock, IL... -- Yes, the town of Woodstock was used for the film rather than Punxsutawney..
