The notorious Group B Monsters driven to to the limit in World Rally Championship events around the world in 1983-1986 seasons - with pure engine sounds
officially yes but then official numbers were bollox, i forget which 1 (think it was an rs200) was put on an 800 hp dyno and broke it! same car was timed 0-60 at 2.1 seconds ON GRAVEL!!!
Group B and the Isle of Man TT are the two craziest motorsports in the world. Won't be long untill some fucker bans the TT event, it will be a sad day...
@@recipoldinasty Depends on the Mustang. The old ones like my '67 are awesome and so are the newest ones but 3rd and also 4th gen were absolutely horrendous (especially 3rd gen, practically a crime against humanity). And anyone who likes V6 Mustangs should be shot.
Totally insane but true.. only a fistful drivers was able to handle these "monsters" - among them goddess Michèle Mouton. Fortunately I experienced these times. M. Loeb may be the most successful rallye-driver alltime, but in a Delta S4 he would not survive the first corner...
Not even remotely true, no one were able to, or have since been able to, handle these cars. When a primitive AWD system is all that stands between 600 bhp and a very loose surface, you can't have control. Praise the cars, cause they were amazing. Praise the drivers, but only their courage.
Group B: too much badassery, manliness, and womanliness ( Michelle Mouton) for this world. RIP brave pilots that died driving those monsters and gave us the best that motorsport can offer. Respect.
Oh my GOD that Quattro slide @4:00 is absolutely insane!!!! That car I would argue, holds the crown of best sounding automobile in motorsports history. I know there are countless incredible sounding cars but IMO, THAT sound of the Audi 5 cylinder engine defined the entire sport.
+FastRedPonyCar Yes, it is fantastic. I propose a joint crown, the full house Short Wheelbase Group B Quatro, and the original Porsche 917 Le Mans car, full naturally aspirated flat 12. There are quite a few clips of them up here on Ewe Choob, but none really sounds right. When fresh, in the old days, they had such a howling resonant sound, nothing since has ever sounded quite that good. This was the car Steve McQueen drove at Le Mans to make the movie. This was the sound every cartoon and kids show stole and dubbed over any 'fast car' back when I was a kid. That is what 'fast' should sound like.
@@personofthefield yes, with the stupid help of electronic nannies, for pussies. This is pure talent and a huge scrotum. There was a clutch, a stick shift, no traction control (with twenty different settings) no ABS, no servo on the brakes, the steering was staight to the rack, if you want more, just let me know PAL! WRC cars are a fine mix of technology that leaves very little to the pure driving. WRC cars when compare to Group B, are for frustrated housewifes in need of penises...
Sadly, it's all about the size of the recording equipment. Back, when cameras were big and bulky, they had a large microphones with good low tones reception
The talent back then is just crazy. The cars got so much power for the light chasis. No powersteering, and with the crowd getting so close to the track. Damn, I salute these drivers
As a 90's kid, I grew up through the 00's hearing stories and seeing pictures of the legendary Group B division. My next exposure to these monsters was video games, and occasional short video clips. This video, however; these stunning machines, the sonorous, proud-sounding engines, the flames, the explosive power, the dangerous locations, it all genuinely almost had me in tears. This is one of the purest expressions of automotive passion and joy 🙌
0:10 who ever filmed this exact clip right there is a legend, i don´t know why but THIS clip is group B at it´s perfection sound, the drift, edging the road out, completely on limit, then this viewer crossing his hands above his head i really don´t know why it´s this clip but it has something special
The start of this video even before the footage starts captures Group B perfectly. The quote and the savage noise of the Audi Quattro tell you everything you need to know.
The Devil would shit is pants most probably… 😅 These cars are for drivers, real drivers, they earned their skills risking their lives every time they pushed the envelope. We have lot of respect for them :)
I remember my dad taking me to Donington Park to watch a stage of the RAC rally. Think it was maybe 82. I remember watching all the Escorts, and chevettes etc go by, and then there was this crazy thundering sound and bright orange flashes reflected through the trees. Then suddenly a quattro flies past showering everyone in gravel, and dissapears back into the trees with flash of orange flames. Think it might have been mikola. I'll never forget it. Like it says 'group B was for men'. And Michelle 😍
The sound, the liveries and the "grab the bull by the horns" style of driving back then was something else. I wish I could have experienced it firsthand, I'm beyond grateful that we have these videos to keep the golden era of rally from disappearing to the pages of history
There was more to Group B being banned than people realise. Behind the scenes pressure being applied from a certain small man who controlled another form of motor sport. That man hated it & hated its popularity. He set about to bring it to an end. He succeeded.
supertrix101 Balestre was having his head scrambled by Bernie - who was dripping pure poison into his ear at every opportunity. Group B didn't suit Bernie & he was hell-bent on persuading Balestre to put a stop to it. It was agreed with manufacturers that Group B would carry on until 1990 along side Group S, which was to be less powerful and with less outrageous bodywork, etc. But with all the pressure from Bernie & others he ( Balestre ) hit the emergency stop, and canned it! Which he wasn't really allowed to do, because of the agreement. It cost the manufacturers a lot of money & they were stuck with the machinery. It's in the Group B book. A good book, by the way.
Or just tell them to use a better quality film camera, there were cinema cameras at the time that could do the film equivalent to that. Plus RU-vid compression affects it, and was it taken off the original source or like a VHS copy?
It'd be awesome to see this all in 4k but the the older, grainier and just overall shit (good camera quality at the time but pretty bad compared to todays camera quality) is what makes some of this footage so special imo
These footage are priceless, they are worth more than gold. It was nice to see that there are some clips from the time that these rally cars used to race at the Hill of Sintra ( 0:36 ) located at the Portuguese riviera,30 km west from Lisbon. And how sorry I am for not having been there to watch and hear these road devils live,it was close to 30 years ago and I was probably 1 or 2 years old... Great video.
Wow, this takes me back. I was only a kid when Group B came and went, but it left such an impression on me. Standing out in Sutton Park (UK) in the rain to watch these awesome machines come past, standing just feet away. It's a shame they're not around any more, but I'm just glad I was around when they were.
Great video - as you said on the tin - pure engine sounds, and no nonsense music in the background. These are the sounds of youth and still they make my hairs stand on end
Amazing 😱. Never got to see these in the flesh back in the day, but do get to watch many of them at Goodwood now. Brave and talented drivers, mega cars and huge crowds. 👍
@@0wly i had a 1.9 diesel 206 but i wouldn't consider it a good car. everything was cheap the suspension was stiff as hell and the electronics would go insane. Still did 320k in it since it was bought new.
Yes,it`s called left foot braking and can be helpful in a number of situations. The Quattro was notoriously understeered,so braking and accelerating was a way to force it into an oversteer and get it around the curve.
This was the craziest, manliest and best time of racing there ever was and ever will be. Complete disregard of human life, pure racing of crazy machines.
@@vincentc3475 Hannu had many penalties and was unlucky so not fair. If you mention Group B rally racing to anyone, the first car that comes to mind is The Sport Quattro S1.
These races were banned and investigations about these cars claimed that they were so fast that the human eye couldn’t keep up and would get tunnel vision making it too hard to see tight turns ahead.
Damn i miss those days. I will never forget the first time of an approaching Audi Quattro. Hell brake out and the most beautiful engine sound you can imagine.
thanks... have been using your videos for study breaks the last few years! these cars and drivers are amazing... love the pure engine sounds... keep up the good work...
