I just came back from a week long grouse hunting trip in northern Ontario. Despite being quite hot and absolutely no rain, it is a really good season for grouse this year. Seen so many birds. I do the majority of my hunting on foot compared to how grouse are typically hunted here - from a truck or 4-wheeler, so thanks for sharing your gear list. You spoke a bit about the guns you use, but would love to hear a bit more in depth such as chokes/ammo you prefer.

Nice, that sounds great! Hunting from a vehicle is definitely very popular. I do it sometimes but I prefer to hunt on foot. I got a few different grouse videos in the works, maybe one of them will be about various guns!
@1diggers1

@@CascadeBackcountry A vid about various guns would be cool. I'm a CZ fan also, I've a bobwhite SXS in 20 I hunt dove with. I also use a Mossberg SA-28 (28 gauge ) semi auto I like to use when I'm feeling accurate. Something neat about the 28. BTW just found your channel, really enjoy seeing how you go about hunting grouse. Very cool, worth subscribing to. ✌

Maybe one day when I own a 28, I can do a video comparing the 12, 20 and 28 gauge for grouse hunting. Thanks for watching!

Appreciate the video! Thank you! That's a lot of gear to haul, and I do appreciate you're hunting in the coastal mountains. At 59 years old, I just don't have it in me anymore to carry a heavy loaded pack like that for hours upon hours away from the the truck while grouse hunting. But I strongly prefer a longer walk in the woods (or a series of shorter walks) over the idea of a 4-wheeler or truck, so that means finding a lighter-weight set of solutions. So for my pared-down "Old Guy kit", it's a 20-ga O&U, a lightweight Bird and Game knife for field-dressing the birds, a bushcraft/survival knife (Terava Jaakaripuuko 110 with Boltaron sheath and attached ferro rod), a small freezer bag of cotton balls soaked in vaseline for firestarter, a lighter, a canteen, a Browning upland vest, 15 to 20 shotshells, a snack and a wrap for lunch, a few freezer bags for grouse meat (big enough to allow wing to remain attached for identification per law), a merino wool long-sleeve shirt, a merino commando-style sweater (LL Bean) if cooler temps, and merino socks, light hiking/hunting boots, a Garmin GPS/In-Reach, iPhone, keys, wallet, and that's about it. I really try to avoid hunting in the rain unless it's going to be a very light rain shower only. I really do still need to find a good lightweight hunting rain jacket, though.

I love your channel it inspired me to go grouse hunting last weekend, also here in the PNW, in Southwest Washington near Riffe lake. I didn't get any but did flush several and they are fast. I had a question for you. Where I hunt the logging roads are closed gates and I had to park at the closed gate in remote areas. Do you worry about car security or do anything to protect your car when you do remote hikes? I was thinking about maybe using a game cam, or something.
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry 11 месяцев назад
Right on! Yeah they flush quick and sometimes just disappear into the brush. I bet there's plenty of birds in that area tho. I do worry about car security... I don't really do anything about it tho haha I just try not to leave too much obvious stuff laying out in my car to steal and if I'm in a real sketchy area, I prob wont leave my car for too long. Thanks for watching!

I am really enjoying your channel! I came across one of your other grouse videos without ever searching for grouse hunting. But I just came from a waterfowl trip, which wasn't all that productive, most of the birds gone (Still 100% enjoyable, like any hunt). We went around the woods trying to spot some grouse (also in season). No results, but picked a bunch of mushrooms - mostly chanterelles and boletes. Also interested in your choice of 40SW. Do you feel that's enough in your area with the hard casts? Are you not in brown bear country? Moose? I suppose with Buffalo Bore/Underwood loads it would be somewhat like mild 357mag, whereas 10mm would maybe begin to approach the more potent 357mag loads. I think S&W managed to get their M&P10 to have practically the same dimensions as the M&P40 so even the holsters are interchangeable, so an M&P10 wouldn't take up more room or be heavier. I would be very curious about your thoughts on that, especially for being out there solo. I have to look through your videos, not sure if you already made content on that topic. I also like the idea of using 20ga for grouse, I didn't think of that as I've never intentionally went specifically for grouse, but I certainly want to! Thank you.
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry 10 месяцев назад
Just getting out and hunting is still fun even if ya don't bring dinner home. Although for RU-vid purposes, it's always a better video to get an animal haha Nothing wrong with picking mushrooms! I just went and filled a basket of chanterelles this morning! The 40S&W... long story... so it's it's the first predator defense gun I bought years ago and it holds 15 rounds. I had contemplated getting a 10mm BUT... Washington state has decided that I can only have a 10 round capacity so now the question is... do I keep using my 40S&W with 15 rounds or get a 10mm with 10 rounds. I am using 200gr hardcast rounds in my S&W which I feel is sufficient for any threat here in the North Cascades which would mostly be cougar and black bear, however, they are probably gonna reintroduce the grizzly which definitely throws a wrench into things. Maybe a giant revolver is the answer. But for now I'll just keep keep using what I got!
@languagesource355
@languagesource355 10 месяцев назад
@@CascadeBackcountry thank you for responding! I think I tend to agree, cougar/black bear - you should be fine with those loads. Love revolvers, but they are "slower". There's a channel called "Guns Gear & Outdoors Alaska" and Alan did a video comparing 44mag and 10mm in a bear charge scenario, that got me thinking. Statistically it seems that having vs. not having is more of an impact than specific caliber, even for large bears. And there's videos of 40cal 200gr hardcast being "adequate". Here's hoping that things are restored in Wash, Ore, etc.

Here in the Quebec province in Canada, the allowed self protection against bears during hiking or small game hunting is... bear spray ... We are told that Black Bears just mind their business usually so we just look for grouse with our shotgun and bird shots and most of the time, no bear spray 🥲
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry 10 месяцев назад
Yeah for a country with such vast wilderness and lots of bears, I'm surprised you're not allowed more protection. I guess a shotgun with bird shot is better than nothin!

Curious about those sights you've got on that Ruger? Looks like a nice setup. I used a cheap Savage Mk11 with just the factory sights for a long time, but being a rather low-quality gun its nearly dead after 20 years and several thousand rounds. I have a couple others that I dont really want to use for one reason or another, kind of looking around for an older tube-mag bolt gun.
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry 10 месяцев назад
I can't remember the brand of sights on here but it's a peep style. I sighted them in at 20 yards as backup if my scope fails. Yeah there's lots of great 22 options out there and they're probably all great options for grouse!

Sometimes I throw em in the pack, sometimes on the outside of the pack, sometimes in the back dump pouch on the back of my hunting vest, sometimes I'll clean em right away and throw the meat in a big ziplock. Hope that not helpful answer helped 🤣
