Bathroom Remodel Part 15: Today, we grouted our new basketweave subway tile shower and cleaned it up. I also installed the new sink on top of the vanity and finished the floor trim and board and batten ceiling trim. I finished out the night filling nail holes and caulking seams along the trim lines.

I was told that you don’t want to do coloured grout, especially black, in batches as the colour will be different each time. This was from the manufacturer. He also stated that you don’t want to push to hard with the sponge when cleaning diagonally to prevent grabbing too of the grout. I just finished my kitchen in one go.. but it was definitely not as smooth to push it in the gap by the end compared to the start. Maybe wetting it a bit more at the start or spraying a mist of water over it would’ve helped?! Not a fan of grouting I must say. Next time I’ll be using as big a tile as I can and forgetting the subway look;)

too thick ....reason the grout got thick is because you over mixed it with the drill and paddle. with unsanded grout and tight grout joints you don't need much and is better mixed by hand. if it was mixed properly with the correct consistency, you could of grouted much more of an area

Yes, this first batch was too thick. We mixed it thinner for the other walls and they went easier.

Want my tiles this way thanx for the video I was struggling with the back grout it’s messy and a pain to get off rinsing sponge over and over. I’ll leave grout for a good 5 to 8 minutes before I use sponge might work best for my grout, thanx.

Why are you doing so much work If you had made the Tilemass a little thinner, the spread of the mass in the joints would have been very simple, and the joints would have been better filled with the grout. Subsequently, you dry it for 15 minutes and then wash the surface with a sponge, until only a light mortar veil is visible on the tiles after drying the joint compound. Then just rub it with a rag and everything is fine ...

That's exactly what we did on the other two walls. I mixed this batch just a little too dry. We found it a little quicker & easier to scrape off the grout a bit before wiping it with the sponge.

Dude you cannot tile a wall like this, even if the face of the tile allows room for grout, the backside of the tiles are pushing hard against one another, not allowing for any structural movement. Have fun retiling this once your tiles start popping off the wall or cracking.

What grout did you use here? I've been reading a lot of reviews and most black grouts turn out grey when they dry, but yours turned out pretty nice.

I don't remember the brand now, but yes the black grout does turn into more of a dark gray over time. Especially if you have harder water.

This helped me out loads as I was struggling with grouting thinking I was making a massive mess! But I’ve flown through the grouting since watching this 🔥

I found out letting it sit for 5-10 mins then scrapping it less mess

Just finished my first project with white tiles and black grout and the amount of mess it makes, I started to think I was doing something wrong so it’s good to see I wasn’t watching this

Looks beautiful! Love the weave pattern! Did the black grout stain the white tile?

I've got mad respect for you. I've done 4 kitchens in my lifetime, but I've only ever done one bathroom. I hope to never do another one. :-)

We redid our kitchen and both baths now. I don't plan on doing another one for a while. There's a ton of work involved!

Baths and kitchens are definitely the most involved rooms to redo. We totally gutted our kitchen and downstairs bath. They were in really terrible condition.

I'm loving yours DIY bathroom series. I have tuned in every day and the progress has been amazing! I originally subscribed to see your furniture DIYs and hacks, but then ran across your barn house makeover series and have been loving them all! Thanks for sharing all of your talents on RU-vid! I also love that sometimes "good enough" will do and you don't stress about perfection! It makes me think I can possibly attempt certain projects! Keep up the awesome job!

Awesome. Glad you like the videos! I usually have an idea of what I want my projects to look like when done, but my finish work tends to not be as nice as I wish it was. It still bothers me a bit, but I've learned to step back, realize that I'm getting better at it as I get more experience, and simply move on.

It does seem to be taking a long time. I'm doing the majority of the work by myself usually for 10-12 hours a day. When we did the rest of the house, it took a few months, and kitchens & baths are the most involved rooms to redo, so 2 weeks for two non-pro DIYers may not be too bad in the long run. I definitely ready to be done though! lol

I hate the dark grout but I'm addicted to you DIY videos
@MrDiyDork
@MrDiyDork 7 лет назад
It's not for everyone, but I think the dark grout makes it look more modern and really makes the pattern pop. Plus, it doesn't look as grungy over time like a white grout would.

Horrible. I’ve been doing tile for 10 years and I would never let that pass in any of my jobs. Look at your grout joints and how the grout looks. It’s horrible man. Your grout joints are jagged and not smooth at all.
