I do this with onion roots and the too-tiny slivers of garlic all the time. A couple of years ago I happened on a leek "clearance" and bought a handful. You *can* regrow yet again - and the biggest most vigorous one I left to bloom and got more seed than I could use!

@@TheMillennialGardener Yeah, that makes sense. The bulbs are going to take a really long time to develop amd might be affected by the onion wanting to go to seed. I used to think the Egyptian walking onions were a novelty until I got 5 bulbs. Now I have like 30 clumps and I don't really know what to do with all of the new bulbs that the plants crank out. I guess I'll be eating those too. Literally the easiest plants to take care of (mostly because they don't go to seed). 🤘

I found a scrap in our garden a couple weeks ago that my wife had harvested, and left less than 2cm of the white end with roots laying out on our wood chips. I put it in the ground next to the rest of the leeks, and it is already around 24cm tall! You can pretty much eat as much as you want from it as long as the root end stays intact 😁

Hey MG, Mark from Charlotte, great video! I’m always confused about the best time to plant onions, green onions and leeks here in zone 7. Unfortunately I live in the woods, and get good sun in the summer but most of my raised beds become shaded as the sun lowers in fall, so a fall garden is tough. What are your thoughts about a good time to plant the alliums in zone 7? Thanks!
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener Год назад
Green onions can be grown any time year round, because you're only eating them for the greens. It's mild enough in most of NC that they can grow all the time. Leeks should be sown based on time of year. Early and mid-season leeks can be sown in late winter for a summer/fall harvest. Late season leeks can be sown in summer for a standing harvest in winter. Bulbing onions MUST be sown so they bulb in June or July, because they are day length sensitive. For us, that means starting seed in January and planting the seedlings outside in early March. That works perfectly here in NC.
