so i do similar with tomatoes and sweet potato slips but i use a small sponge fish filter (look for filters for beta fish) hook a splinter to the pump and run a bunch of jars. looks like a mad scientist lab and to keep down on the algae i use food coloring. different color for each jar, if you got kids they love it and it gets them more interested.

Wow! I've watched a lot videos and have talked to a lot of gardeners, but this is best and easiest to learn tutorial that I have seen. Thanks very much for your time in doing this how-to. My father was a great gardener, he could grow anything. But, he never took the time to propagate Rosemary. It was the only herb he never did. He would just buy or be given one from another Italian gardener friends every spring. He could graft and do all kinds of stuff. He was born here in the U.S., but raised on his grandparent's farm in the 1920's and 30's in Italy. That is the only thing that I can think of that he never taught me. Thanks again for the lesson! Take care Jeff!

Yes, I've had nothing but success rooting it in water..... Truth though, many of the woody plants and perennials are just rooted in straight soil, so there's people on both sides, lol!

Thank you I guess my phone has been listening to me talk about taking cuttings of my exit rosemary plants to multiple in my backyard around my chicken coop and your video pops up without me googling it. Perfect timing. I'm on it this morning. I'll grow at least 20-40 new rosemary plants. I love that smell in my yard and the chickens don't bother it.

When it comes to herb seeds, try sprinkling them on the surface and covering them with wet single ply tissue paper. Since the seeds are so tiny, they don't need to be buried. Keep it wet and avoid letting the paper dry out, and the seeds should germinate within a week. The plants will still take a very long time to grow to maturity, so you need to be patient.

Also, I hope you didn't throw those lovely rosemary leaves away. I'd have to roast some type of meat with them or chop them up and dry them. 2:30 I use this method of just taking small 2in / 5cm young cuttings, and stick them in soil where I have other things growing - it's not a 100% success rate, but with how simple and easy it is to do, it's good enough to make a ton of plants. I usually just take rosemary cuttings in spring and put them directly in the same soil around tomatoes or other plants I grow for summer, then in the end once those summer plants are done, I end up with whatever rosemary plants survived, and I can relocate them were and when needed.

I have too much rosemary already but still going to propagate new plants. Can't resist the aroma of fresh rosemary and I'm using it more in cooking. Wish I was in a non 5A growing zone where I could leave in the ground year round and let it become a large bushy aromatic herb. However, it seems to be happy in various size containers in my unheated greenhouse.

Best video I have seen over the yrs! I love rosemary but have not been successful in over wintering indoors or outdoors. I live in Zone 6b on Cape Cod and have bought at least a dozen rosemary plants that have not survived. I will try to root this spring if my current one survives and/or another new one. I wonder if you can root cut organic rosemary from the grocery store. Sometimes they sell bunches w very long stems.

@theripetomatofarms, @4:30, and added benefit from stripping the bottom half of leaves is you now have a good bit of herb for a compound butter. Excellent on steaks!

Right on RLB. 6b gets pretty cold....have you ever left one outside to see if it survives? Snow helps as its excellent insulation.....but exposed with your winter winds....I can see why you bring it in.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I left one old a couple of years ago and it died. I even put it out of the wind. Here where I live we don’t get a lot of snow, but we do get a lot of freezing temps down in the negative degrees for overnight lows.

I have a 10 year old potted rosemary. The bottom halfway of the stems are bare. Is there anyway of getting growth back on these half bare stems? I've been a gardener for over 50 years, and have had my own nursery growing 250+ varieties of gingers, and butterfly 🦋 plants, and my own herbs 🌿. Thyme and rosemary are my favorites but, not much luck propagating them, or keeping them pretty. Thank you for sharing such an awesome video. I enjoy the fact that you explain everything.

Thank you for your videos, It is very helpful! I've been trying to have Rosemary for a long time (I bought a vase from a fresh market, or someone gave me a branch. I tried many different ways and turned to have the leaves dried (brown) very quickly, even when I put them in the water to grow the roots. I put roots in the soil with rocks and sand for drainage; I put them under the sun (4 hours) or totally on the shades or full sun, the same varieties of trying I did with watering. I tried many different ways to cultivate It, but no luck so far. I really want this plant, so I'll not give up. Do you have some idea what could be the problem? I really appreciate your answer or if anybody here has the same experience, please feel free to share.

I went to Plan B on the Rosemary and planted the seeds in a tray and they have sprouted. I will thin and transplant to pots when they get a couple inches tall. The last two store-bought cuttings croaked. My Oregano and Cilantro seeds have also sprouted, but the Spearmint has not, yet. I still have Sage, Thyme and Basil to plant. 1/29/23.

Thanks a bunch. This video is packed with the most helpful tips and it's easy to understand. I started putting my cuttings in water a week ago, but nothing happened and I thought I did it wrong again. Now I know I have to have patience and wait for another week or so. A very elementary question - what type of potting soil do I need to have? This is my first time growing rosemary. So far I could only grow mint, lol!

Thanks Nancy! For soil, a simple organic potting mix will do just fine. Coarse works as well, Rosemary isn't picky! :-)

UPDATE. Your video 2 days ago on Top 5 Herbs To Grow From Cutting. The Rosemary I bought from the store, well, 50/50 so far. The lower stem appears to be dying after soaking in water and potting with Root Hormone. Turning brown and falling apart. But the upper part that I cut off where it was broken, immediately dipped in Root Hormone and potted are still green and seem to be OK.
