Did you know that the caps of wine cap mushrooms can grow to be up to 15 inches in diameter? These mushrooms can get BIG and they are so easy to grow. The presence of wine cap mycelium in your garden can improve crop yields, break down organic matter quickly, and reduce harmful nematodes! #shorts #mushrooms #fungi #northspore #northsporemushrooms #spreadthespore #mycology #winecap #growmushrooms

I ordered these last SUMMER! Not the best timing as the temp was consistently over 100 F and we were in a drought. I was clueless when I ordered but once they arrived, I figured there was nothing to lose so I went ahead and inoculated my wood chips. I watered daily for the first couple weeks. This spring we’ve been shocked with the abundance! Mushroom omelettes, mushroom quiches, mushroom soups, I’ve even sautéed and frozen some. These are FANTASTIC and super easy to grow!

wine caps are incredibly resilient and excellent producers! Did you order your spawn from North Spore? I think our strain is particularly robust!

@@NorthSpore yes, I did order from North Spore. In fact I contacted them when I realized my poor timing and was advised to go ahead and water daily for the first week or two to help them get established.

We haven't tested wine cap on hemp mulch, but I think there is a good chance it will work well. Other mushrooms species do grow very well on hemp byproducts

There's a way you can like grind one up in water creating tons of spores and then use that wat to make like 100 mushrooms from a single one. I don't remember the whole thing but that's the jist of it.
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore Год назад
you can also take the myceliated mulch and spread it around your garden/yard to further propagate the wine caps

Can I use dirty pine shavings from my chicken coop? Or would I need to let it compost the manure for a long time like with a regular garden? I have no idea how old the pine shavings are upon purchase. I get the big bags at tractor supply that are for animal bedding/litter.
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore Год назад
You'd definitely want it to be composted, but then it could be super useful for mushroom cultivation.
@genuineimpulse9134
@genuineimpulse9134 Год назад
you can use spawn on wet cardboard, layer and let the mycellium grow on the cardboard. Then you can use tiny portions of that cardboard to add to mulch in many places.
@jasminesmith6452
@jasminesmith6452 5 месяцев назад
I'm wondering, could these be grown in chicken bedding that been composting, or used rabbit hay? I'm new to mushrooms and haven't yet attempted to grow any, so sorry if that's a dumb question.

While many kinds of substrates can be used for growing wine cap, we highly recommend using fresh hard wood chips and/or straw 🙂

Can u use mulch as a substrate in the garden? Also we have like 100 plus heat here in nevada xD
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore Год назад
you don't want to add wood mulch or wood chips directly to your garden, but you can 'mulch' your garden with straw and inoculate that with wine caps. In places like Nevada you'll want to make sure to choose a shady area and keep it as moist as possible. North Spore has a couple of articles about growing mushrooms in desert climates on our blog! check it out
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore Год назад
The hot dry air there will prove challenging, but if you supplement with shade and moisture, it's definitely doable.

So, I am beginner at this and I have something of a stupid question... 😅 I have a circular garden bed at the base of a large old Water Oak, and in this bed I grow Elephant Ears and Shampoo Ginger. During the winter, I insulate the dormant roots with a heavy layer of leaves to protect them from the cold, but they take a long time to break down and I figured inoculating the site with mushrooms may improve soil quality while simultaneously breaking down the leaves over the course of winter, and since I am still very new to this, I do not know a lot about how mushrooms work. So, as for my question: I know they rather like to consume straw, and Ginger is technically a grass, so... could the Wine Cap Mycelium potentially do any harm to my dormant Shampoo Ginger roots by feeding on them, or am I worried over nothing? 🤔🤔🤔
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 10 месяцев назад
No need to worry! Wine cap eats dead stuff and would focus on that leaving your dormant roots alone.
