Funny short story here Jeff. I probably have mentioned I have a decent sized tree (17-18 foot) in my yard that was here when we moved in two years ago. We did not know what variety of avocado it was and in our first year it dropped all of it's tiny fruitlets by the May/June timeframe. This year just finished it was a similar story with dropping tiny fruits but it ended up hanging onto 3 of them. The fruits were green for a few months but they started turning black around September. We harvested all 3 fruits in the beginning of November. They were positively Mexicola Grande and were delicious. As mentioned before, we are in El Dorado Hills with a climate not so different than yours...both very hot in the summer and on the edge of too cold in the winter. I believe my biggest challenge is getting enough pollinators when the flowers are in bloom. I wanted to give you a personal thanks for providing so much great information and tips on how to successfully grow the avocado trees in our marginal climate! I have multiple smaller plants going in 15 gallon pots and 24 inch boxes, each of which are different varieties and are reported to be somewhat hardy to hot and cold. When they get to sufficient size and health, I will start putting them in ground. Cheers...Chris

Fantastic demonstration Jeff. I remember watching all of your avocado videos before mine started fruiting. Now I always have fruit, well worth the early protection efforts

@@TropicalGardenGuy yeah, I’m in the UK, near Manchester. I know avocados have been grown in London, it will be much harder this far north though. I might be able to keep a tree alive with some cold protection and a good microclimate 🤞

Nice looking guacamole Jeff. To be honest I'm a bit lazy, I buy ready made tubs of it here 😂😂. I've never tried a mexicola grande of course as they don't ship well because of the thin skin so commercial growers don't really bother with them 😁

No comparison. The premade guac you find here always tastes like green jello!

Those are nice avocados. We have been getting to 29F in eastern Sac County the last few nights. Covered the pumello/lime cross 'Tahitian' as it is super sensitive to frost. See if you can grow Manzano peppers as they are really good for salsa, guac, and Cortido. The Manzano needs to be grown like a perennial as they put out 15' long vines (can be made into a tree). I covered my raised bed this winter as I again am wanting to grow Manzano peppers, plus keep other peppers alive through the winter (they are perennials).

Sounds good. I’ll have to try manazano peppers
