*My grandparents ended up with a lucky tree. No idea what sort of apple the seed came from, but the apples on the lucky tree were huge, green, and sweet. It also bared fruit petty quick.*

When my son was 3, he planted 3 apple seeds in my flower bed. A year went by and we just thought they didn't sprout. I forgot all about the apple seeds. About 2 years ago (8 years later), I was cutting back plants and weeding and I came across a strange plant. It was the apple tree he had planted. I have rehomed the tree to a suitable location and it is 5 foot tall now. I can't wait to see what it will be! Love your videos!

Thanks! You can name it after your son. I hope it comes out as a good edible variety.

Why not graft on a scion of a known variety so that you will have two varieties on the same trunk and produce a self-pollening tree? FEDCO tree in Maine is one provider, but I believe there is a cut off date for ordering.... Good luck and I hope you get a desirable variety from your planting

That's good to hear. As I'm sure you have gathered up until now, I hate having to sell anything. I'm glad it's not as annoying as it could be. Whenever you guys watch more ads en masse, It really helps with the revenue. Contributions on patreon and etsy add up and it gives me more ability to focus on making the videos. I was thinking of doing 2 times a week for the spring time (when most people watch garden videos) is that too much? should I stick with once a week?

suburban homestead i think we would all love as much as u choose to share... i could binge watch your videos so of course id love 2 a week lol but you have to get pleasure out of it too imo... so if it feels good to do more i say go for it. if it begins to feel rushed or stressful and takes away from your pleasure of producing your art... id just do what inspires you. ♡

Hi! Your videos are so beautiful and informative! Love it! Here in Finland we use a "fruit steamer" called a mehu-maija (roughly translated it would be called a Juice Maya/Mary) which is essentially a huge, three-layered pot where you pour water in the bottom layer and put your fruit in (apples just cut i half, no cleaning needed if you don't want to) the top layer that has small holes in the bottom, like a very rough sieve. The juice is steamed out of thefruit/berries and drips into the middle layer that has a hose/tap. You can just leave the whole contraption to it on the stove, boiling gently, and drain the juice straight into bottles now and then. When no more juice is dripping out (you can get an amazing amount of juice out of just about any fruit like this!!) I stir the pulp gently and let the whole thing stand for a while without heat just to get the last of the juice out. By this point the pulp is usually pretty well spent. If I've had the time or will to gut out the pips before I start I usually freexe the pulp in portions to use in bread dough later. Currant pulp I dry. If I've not cleaned them the pulp makes great compost. 😉

I have 3 apple seedlings that I have grown from seed. I did realize that they wouldn't grow true to the Granny Smith seed that I planted, but that was OK with me because I planned to graft several different varieties to them so that I would have apples over a longer period of time rather than get all of my apples at the same time. Genetically, I think that the tree will be stronger because of the wild genes. I also planted peach pits, which seem to have the same propensity to go back to the wild version. I have, however, grafted two known and wonderful varieties of peach (Suncrest and Babcock) to a St. Julien plum rootstock and am looking forward to some delicious eating :). Glad to see the plant signs. I'll check them out.

FYI, next time you get in the mood to make Jello, substitute either home made apple, pear or peach sauce in place of the COLD water. This should produce a sauce akin to the canned cranberry sauce most of us are familiar with. The Jello still provides the dominate flavor, but there is a significant change in texture plus a light fruit taste.

Hiya, I love your video's. Gardening is in my genes and I even have my surname growing in my garden! Just wanted to add, the pulp that's leftover from juicing apples and pears can be baked in cakes and bread so there is no waste what so ever, even though if it's put into the compost, I think it's not wasted. I'm still a novice when it comes to gardening but I love it, so does my 3 year old Daniel, who can name all the plants growing in the back garden (apart from 3 bushes I don't know the name of 😂) He is also a composting expert and likes recycling too (not joking) If he notices something has fallen into the wrong bin, he'll take it out and out it in the correct bin. I'm so proud! 😍 I'm quite frugal and love re-using items that usually end up in the bin/ recycling bin. Even if it's just a card box that had tea bags in for my son to draw on. Do you grow chilli's? Were getting 12 plants today and putting them in our greenhouse which our neighbour kindly gave us. Kind regards, Laura, Andy and Daniel x

You can graft a known, mature variety into your seedling and get fruit while you wait for the seedling to show fruit. If you don’t like what it turns out to be, you still have the known variety left. You should check out permaculture, there is no waste in a well designed systems. Cheers!

I've been working for some years now to dispel the myth that almost all apples grown from seed will be unfit to eat. That idea was popularized by Michael Pollan in Botany of Desire, but it was radically overstated and used as a basis for the fabric of the entire chapter on apples. I've communicated with a bunch of people growing apples from seed and the chances are not so dismal. Yes, they are likely to be different, but the positive traits of parents are often passed on as well. I'm just starting to get enough fruit to make good assessments, but I only remember one real spitter so far and one that was just insipidly sweet and flavorless. The rest have been edible to very good. Other people hunt hedgerows for seedling apples and graft and name the good ones. It's not just me, but the historical record as well. In fact, nothing agrees with Pollans take on it unless statements about the ratio of seedlings to selections in large scale breeding programs are misinterpreted. It certainly is an adventurous undertaking and not the first thing I'd recommend for just a tree or two, but a chaos of seedlings is also what created English and American apple diversity in the first place. American apple diversity exploded into thousands of named varieties due to the planting of seedlings. Personally I'm more in favor of making intentional crosses and planting those seeds, but planting any seed from a very good apples is a second best, especially if it was likely pollinated by other good eating apples. There is an apple renaissance afoot, perhaps the most exciting part of which is the proliferation of people planting seeds and undertaking citizen backyard plant breeding. Here is my playlist of apple breeding and seedling related videos. ru-vid.com/group/PL60FnyEY-eJAMOPvU-yyF4JfuW5ocJvC4

I really appreciate the work you are doing. It does make sense that the offspring of an edible apple be also likely edible. Correct me if I'm not mistaken, but can't one of the parents used to pollinate be a crab-apple?
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 5 лет назад
Yes, that's true. that isn't necessarily a bad thing. it depends on the crab. Some of the most intriguing flavor and sugar characteristics I'm working with come from crabs. Most crabs are very primitive though and may very well carry in bad traits. I think using crabs as pollinators might have been more common in the past, but I'm not sure.

My small yard is full, my body failing too soon but the desire to start trees from seed is sooo intense. Picked up apples from someone's farm yard yesterday,one tree had 2 varieties grafted on, the other was one strong tree. Will save the seeds and see what happens, when I had more land we planted a pear tree that only gave 3 pears on the second year but after was super heavy bearing but was not real sweet no matter how long on the tree or how long it set after but mixed with a few raisins made a wonderful pear pie which became near daily along with a quiche. I miss that tree

I suppose it depends on how it was fertilized. If for instance, a crabapple provided the pollen, there will be less chance of a good apple coming out from what I understand.
@NorthernThaiGardenGuy

I think the benefits of having an apple tree in your garden outweigh the downside. They create a fungal network in your yard (from about 30' out from the point they are planted in all directions).
@suburbanhomestead

That is great. But grafting good cultivars is a great way of having the tree benefits and still get something nice to eat.

Northern Thai Garden Guy I recently found an abandoned orchard from the 19th century, and i was struck by how many wild plants and animals grew and lived around the trees, much more densely than anywhere else nearby. I wondered if the apples were growing symbiotically with the wild plants, because not only were the latter so diverse and numerous, but the apple trees seemed really healthy and productive, despite being unattended for decades. In a commercial orchard, those plants would have been killed, the animals driven off, and the trees would have been sprayed.
@NorthernThaiGardenGuy
@NorthernThaiGardenGuy 6 лет назад
VictorNewman201 When you think of how nature works - it just makes sense. I grow a lot of Avocados here in Northern Thailand (from Haas pits that I brought in with me from the States). People make too much about when you get fruit, and miss out on so many other benefits of just simply growing from seed (such as with Avos - their leaves make an AMAZINGLY healthy tea for the Kidneys), and yeah - if I get fruits from them one day then great, but if not - graft away! :)

It's a bit of an overstatement that you're more likely to get sour, unpalatable apples. Growing up, we had several wild apple and pear trees on our property. Most of them produced tasty fruit. There was one apple tree that was way back in a brush field that produced golfball-sized green apples. Those were sour and tannic, but I suspect I was picking them before they were ripe and by the time they were ripe, the birds had eaten them all by the time they were ripe. If you have the space and like experimenting, why not grow from seed? You can always graft something else on the rootstock if you don't like the apples.
@xaisthoj
@xaisthoj 6 лет назад
If someone was going to grow just one tree, they need another tree that is not a clone to cross pollinate and therefore set fruits. Grafting a desirable variety on to the root stock would solve that problem as you would two genetics on the same stock. But then of course, there's the problem of wether both genetics will flower at the same time .

I'm definitely an optimist, and I see God blessing all the fruits of MY labor, BUT I'm, also, a realist. I do not want desieses in the yard, and I do not want to wait 10 years to get the fruit off the tree. I have the same pear tree as you, and it produces abundantly with no care from me - it's all God and His nature. That being said, I think this year I will give the pear tree some extra nutrition as our soil has never been amended with nutrients. I hope I won't screw up the huge harvest we get from it.

Correct - all over the countryside in Australia there are wild apple trees on the side of the road, where someone has probably thrown an apple core out of the window. I have not researched much about plums, but It would be safe to say that grafting onto rootstock raised from seedling might be a great way to ensure you get an exact copy.

Are there any apple varieties which can be grown in subtropical climates😐😐

That I'm not sure. I lived in São Paulo and there were no apples trees there. But who needs apples when there are so many tropical fruits to choose from.

Thanks for the info about apple trees. I have been trying to do this for a while. I successfully germinated a few seeds by placing them in a bamp paper towel inside a mason jar, covering it with its lid and placing it in the refrigerator. I never got arround planting it on the dirt, but they do germinate faster doing this process. Now that I know that growing from seed my not be the best option I will have to rely on my local nursery to buy one. By the way, you may want to visit Discountjuicers.com, John K. has a bunch of videos on slow auger juicers that could potentially help you pick the best one for your needs. You may benefit from this gadget since your pear tree produces so much. These type of juicers give you instant juice by pressing out the liquid from fruits and vegetables. I have one and I love it 😊 God bless you!!

They could make nice rootstock to graft (although it would most likely be standard size) Auger juicers are much better but they are expensive :-) At least the juice is raw (and better for the health)

That's not true you won't get a wild apple
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 6 лет назад
You are technically correct. It will have characteristics of a cultivated apple, but most of the time they are very small and many times can be bitter, astringent. It depends also what tree it crossed with. If it crossed with crabapples, it will more likely be closer to a wild apple.
