I grew up in Europe. I remember my father harvesting baby black eye peas before they started the indentations and we would steam them like green beans and then toss them with oil, vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper. I liked them so much better then green beans.. I miss them... Thank you for the video, it brings back good memories..

Omg YES, I also planted a bunch of supposed "bush" beans that 100% started climbing everything around them! I think from now on I'm a just have trellises ready for any kind of bean, lol Thanks for this video, this is my first time growing cowpeas so I had no idea when to harvest them!

Nice video, thank you.❤️ I am growing Pinkeye Purple Hull cow peas (black eyed peas as I call them) for first time. I too am in zone 8b, but in the Southern California desert. As a child I was babysat by a neighbor that cooked black eyed peas and cornbread, a lot, and I loved them! I have always been the only one in my family that ate them, so I guess it’s why I never grew them until now. Better late than never! I also am growing okra for the first time, another food that the rest of my family doesn’t eat, so, more for me, yum!

Here in the south, we also like a variety similar to BEP's called pink eyed peas, which don't make tendrils. I couldn't find any so went to the store and bought a few pounds of black eyed peas. They came up well but after they started getting to about my knee in height, I noticed tendrils!! Needless to say, the field was a mess to harvest but I'm getting a pretty good harvest of peas regardless. 21pounds since I planed them on July 18 and much more to go!

@@auyannaplants Yes, an amazing harvest but also an amazing mess due to the tendrils all tangled and tied up to each other! So excited you are growing peas. I save peas every year and replant. I just let them dry in the pod and put some up and store them in a cool dry place and save them for next season. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!

Hello, I have grown cow peas also. I live in north central Florida and there’s a fine line to pick the peas before they mildew! Yikes. Also, I have a problem with large ants congregating around the top of the pods and I have to flick the beans before picking which is such a pain! Lol. It’s always when the beans are ready when the pods turn brown. If I pick them green, the peas shrink when they dry! They still taste yummy though but what a job! To me they taste like boiled peanuts😁

Thanks so much for watching. My dad said that when he was young they would eat them fresh and so I tried them and they were delicious and tender. You definitely have to be selective with the ones you pick fresh because they can be a bit tedious to shell but so well worth it. I am going to plant more this season. Thank you so much for watching!

Southern Entertaining ... here’s something you might find fun to try (if you haven’t already)...I’ve sprouted some beans and seeds for salads or sandwiches. Some are tasty and some are a bit strong. I had bought lentils a looong time ago and never cooked them. I wondered if they would sprout and how they tasted. Let me tell you....I don’t think I will EVER cook them. Best tasing sprouts and cheap! Now I should throw some in the ground!

They turn yellow over time. Not all will open as they are self fertile. Plants are indeed very intelligent. You can let them mature mostly on the plant and then harvest every month or so carefully from the tip. That stem that flowered will flower gain and Each successive harvest will have more pods. I’m on my 4 th harvest and they are now heavy with pods. I have a gas oven so I let nature pods dry in the oven with just the pilot light and they will dry nicely.

Wow you definitely have been getting some great harvests. Ours are drying on the vine and we are almost at the end but I ove the fact that you dry them in the oven. Thank you so much for watching.

My flowers seem to be yellow, maybe I don’t catch them early enough. Plants are indeed very smart. We have drought here. I plant them in my pots where the soil is getting old and stale and figured putting the peas in with those old pots it would freshen up the soil a bit. These are beautiful. Does leaving them on the plant prevent it from setting more flowers?
@auyannaplants
@auyannaplants 4 года назад
Yes we saw beautiful yellow almost like a buttercup yellow blooms as well and they are so beautiful. Great idea on putting them in your old pots because it will add nitrogen to them. Thank you so much for watching!

Will these grow well in partial shade. We have a long grow season here in Houston, but utilize partial shade to avoid having to water endlesssly
@auyannaplants
@auyannaplants 2 года назад
I think they will be fine with a little part shade. We move our cowpeas around in the garden and the ones last season had trees around them. They got sun but also afternoon shade and they did well. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!

That is so wonderful. We had the cow peas trailing on a cattle panel. You will definitely need some type of support. The okra do well here. We had one last year grow to 9ft tall. Each year I say I am not going to grow lots of okra because my youngest daughter is the only one in the house that eats them but I just planted 12😂 Thank you so much for watching!!

New subscriber 😍. We were given 10 little seedling black eyed pea plants.. I have a question... Each little pod in the planter has 2 plants. Do I plant them all separate or put the 2 together... I love your garden. This is our first garden and we are enjoying it.
@auyannaplants
@auyannaplants 4 года назад
I like to plant one plant per hole that way they are not competing for nutrients. If you can carefully separate it and that way you can get have more. you can take like a butter knife and do this but if they are too close together and it is going to harm both just plant them together. I hope this helps. Thank you so much for watching and I hope you enjoy the peas😀
