THIS IS MY SEED TO PLATE VIDEO ON BLACK EYED PEAS. Black eyed peas are easy to grow and in many locations you can grow two crops in one growing season. Watch me and see how easy it is.
I love this man. Only know him from RU-vid and got to talk to him one time. He was a survivor! Like my mom, I'm thankful he has gone on to be with the Lord. He doesn't have to worry about the woes we're all having to face right now. However, he is still teaching the rest of us !
IJUST FOUND THIS CHANNEL. Sorry he is no longer with us. You are correct a survivor. Like my parents were. I thank GOD I am the same way. Yes, he is still teaching.
Hi Stella. I am old, 80 years old, and have learned a lot over my lifetime. I am happy to share with you my experience in growing and cooking vegetables. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. OAG
Amazing video with that lovely smile on your face while testing always makes us happy. Glad to see you’re doing well and enjoying. Highly appreciate all of your outstanding efforts. We just love you and your great works. Take good care of yourself. Thanks a lot.
I am so happy to have found this video, since I’m growing black eyed peas for the first time this year. I only wish I’d found it before this beautiful man went on to glory. Glad bless you sir, and thank you ever so much for happily sharing your wealth of knowledge with the world. 💜
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I am getting old, now 80 years old, however, I plan to keep making videos as long as I am able. Thank you for watching my videos. OAG
My hubby is from Alabama and we watch your videos together every time one comes on, we both know the value of good country food. Thank you for all you do.
Yep, I am an old man (80 years old) and I do like kitchen gadgets that help make good food. I love your RU-vid channel and the cooking you do. Thank you for watching my videos. OAG
Thank you Cheryl. Us old folks grew up when times were hard and gardening was very much a part of how we survived. I am now 80 years old and still enjoy growing as much of my food as I can. Thank you for watching my videos. If you haven't already, please subscribe, OAG
My AGpa, shelling those is a true test in patience. I did my black beans the same way. It took me three days. My favorite part of your videos is your taste test close up. Someone told me to put the beans/peas in a sheet or tarp and beat it with a stick. Supposedly this shells them all at once. Of course I like to sit and shell. Reminds me of my Mom when we'd sit on the back porch and visit and shell them. Thanks for sharing. I'll grow those next year.
Hello Farmergirl and yes, you are right. I kind of enjoy sitting and shelling these peas also. I too remember sitting with family and shelling peas or beans for winter eating. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. OAG
Excellent video. Thank you for showing how to cook them. Your smile and chuckle when eating them made my day! Thanks for sharing, be safe, and be well!
I enjoyed this video so much. I’m about to plant mine and I hope to enjoy them as much as he did. I felt like my granddaddy was right here telling me how to grow them.
I have never been to North America nor have I wanted to visit until watching content like this. I guess this cements in my mind the famous song, 'Sweet Home Alabama.' I wish we had the weather to grow the sheer variety of produce that you have on your little patch of heaven. Fantastic video OAG x Andy, Lincolnshire, UK
Hello Andy and welcome to my videos. Yes, I am blessed with having my small farm and a long, but hot growing season. Thank you for watching my videos and please subscribe to my channel. OAG
Love this guy. need more like him in the world. The way his eyes lit up and that smile when he ate those peas... just a genuine simple man. Also, talked me right into growing my own peas. keep on keepin on OAG.
Yep, I love good food. Although, I don't eat a lot. As to being a simple man, yes, I am, wouldn't know how to be any different. And I do plan to keep on keeping on as long as I can, I am now 80 years old, so who knows how much longer I will last. OAG
Watching with my 2.5yo son. He was really enjoying the video and asking lots of questions. All my kids love working in the garden. Thank you for sharing with us! Feels like we are coming over for a quick visit with each video.
Danniella, I think that is wonderful that you are having your children working in the garden with you. One of the best things we can teach our children is where their food comes from and then teach them how to grow it. If you are close to where I live, you could come over for a visit in the garden. Thanks for watching and for commenting. OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener we don't yet. Clear over in the northern mountains of CA right now. Still waiting to hear if we will be moving to Huntsville next year. If we do, you can bet we will come visit!
Hello Martha and welcome to my videos. Some years I have grown Crowder peas also. I like to shell peas and of course they are so good when cooked with a ham bone and some cornbread. Thank you for watching my videos. Please subscribe. OAG
These are an old time country food. They grow easy and taste good. And they can be stored as dry peas for food during the winter. Thank you for watching my videos, please subscribe. OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener you are one of the best people Ive ever discovered and I really like to watch you and enjoy learning in the early morning with my coffee. I’ve learned a great deal, and my sauerkraut is excellent because of your teachings., I passed on your information to others and they are doing the same. You’re one very interesting person and I do very much appreciate your sharing your knowledge. Thank you.
You are welcome, I am happy to share my experience with you. Thank you for watching my videos. If you haven't already, please subscribe and click on the "Bell" Icon. OAG
Didn't know Charles long. Fell in love with his way with people. He really enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking....doing his videos and sharing a lot of knowledge of these topics with us. Jesus bless his family.
Yes, I agree. That is why I live in the country. Thank you for watching my videos. I am trying to reach a major goal of subscribers, you can help me by asking all your friends and family to subscribe to my RU-vid channel. Thank you. OAG
Yum. Once you get started, ya just can't stop. I have got to limit myself. Thank you for the upload. I subscribed a long time back. I'm so glad you are still doing the videos.
Hello Kent and thank you for subscribing to my channel. You are right, these Black Eyed peas are so good. I try to upload a video once a week, usually on Friday evening. Thanks for watching what I am doing in my garden and cooking. OAG
Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed your video. Hope you are staying safe during this time. I liked and subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. My husband loves black eyed peas.
Thank you. I love you too for watching my videos. I am 80, years old, so I am taking good care of myself. And I wish for you good health. Please subscribe to my channel. OAG
Your double cook method looks like it solves the “dirty” water problem I’ve had before when cooking them. Thank you. Looking forward to my own small harvest.
I just love your videos! Thank you for taking the time to re ord and share your knowledge. Some of the things you have said during the various videos of yours that I have already viewed, remind me so much of my Grandmama and my Daddy. Brings back so many good childhood memories! Country cooked food is absolutely the best and soo comforting. I so look forward to watching and learning from your videos! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
Thank you for watching my videos. I am happy I can bring you some wonderful memories of your childhood. Yep, country cooking/country food is the best and the healthiest for us. Thank you for watching my videos. If you haven't already, please subscribe. OAG
Hello PPM and welcome to my video. That is what I like, home grown, home cooked food. That way I know what is in or on my food. I didn't get to be 80 years old eating junk food, growing it myself is the healthiest way. Thank you for watching my video. Please subscribe. OAG
You've inspired me to grow my own black eye peas. I just love your little dance when you're doing the taste test. .....makes me wish I could really get some
Glad to see this knowledge being shared and preserved. Up here in my part of Louisiana outside of West Monroe we prefer fresh pink eye peas but I had a black eye and a black crowder pop up this late summer in my second crop. Going to save them and plant next year. Dad likes the pepper sauce which is just Apple cider vinegar and jalapenos. We use bacon and sautee the onion in the fat. Just had some lady peas from the garden tonight. First time growing them haven't made much with the drought this year but the plants are still green so hopefully get another mess before winter.
Yep, I some times grow purple hull peas also. The drought hurt all my crops this year. I sure hope it doesn't do that again next year. Thank you for watching my videos. OAG
I loved this video! Revived my desire for black eyed peas. Made me remember my childhood helping dad shell those black eyed peas and purple hull peas. Thanks for the memories❤️🙏
Hello Betty Jane. Yes, I also sometimes grow Purple Hull peas. And me too, remember helping my parents shell peas and some times beans. Thank you for watching my videos. OAG
This brings back memories from my childhood of growing purple hull peas with my Grandmother in her large garden in Foxworth, Mississippi. She always shared some of her crop with my cousins down the road. Spent hours shelling the peas, and more hours canning the peas. We did speckled butter beans as well. The reward was months later in the middle of winter! Thank you for your videos!
Sir, you are such a treasure! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm :) I have never been more inspired to grow my own veggies. God bless!
1st time I've came across Mr. Old Bama Gardener..... subscribed...... gonna watch his videos from here on out ...hea just the cutest thing....... except maybe during football season. I'm in Louisiana GEAUX TIGERS !!
I also like purple hull peas from an early age. I remember my grandmother's garden (Foxworth, MS) and her canning the peas at the end of the season. Also speckled butter beans and brown butter beans! Thank you for such an excellent video! Brings back lots of great memories!!
Yes, I some times grow purple hull peas and I like them also. I was planning to grow speckled butter beans this past summer but never got it done. I will next spring. Thank you for watching my videos. I will be making some videos on cooking the vegetables I have stored. So, keep watching. OAG
You’re a treasure with a little bit of rascal somewhere back there. I’m like Charlie Brown and you play Lucy who always pulls the ball and CB falls flat on his back. I fall for it every video.
I think you are talking about my teasing with offering you a bite of my food. Thank you for watching my videos, If you haven't already, please subscribe. OAG
OldAlabamaGardener I am a little better every day, thank God. Had a setback with edema but I think we’re on the right track now and I have a check up on the seventh. Three different procedures packed a big wallop. They ended up installing the pacemaker in my abdomen, I imagine to keep it away from the coronary artery repair. Today marks four weeks, and recovery typically is 5 to 8 weeks. Thanks for watching out for me!
I've been a subscriber since early on and I always learn something. Today I learned how hungry I am for black eyed peas! Thanks for these videos from a city gal learning to garden and can the country way.
Sherrie, thank you for watching my video. Yep, I get to wanting some Black Eyed peas too. Cooking them in an Instant Pot is very easy and quick. Later I will make a video on canning these as dry peas. Thank you for being a subscriber to my channel. OAG
Your videos make me think of my daddy's beautiful gardens. I love both black eye peas and purple hull peas. I make homemade "CHOW CHOW" to eat with my black eye peas. I make delicious CHOW CHOW similar to how mamma made hers! LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. Wish I could buy a bag from you. What ever the cost would be worth it!!!
Hello Jean Jean and welcome to my videos. I sometimes grow Purple Hull peas also. I don't spray my Black Eye peas with poisons so I don't think you would like my peas because the quality of my peas is not as good as you can buy at the stores. I appreciate you watching my videos. OAG
Very good observation. It was true back in your grandparents day and it is still true today. The junk food that Americans are eating these days is killing them at a faster rate than ever before. Thanks for watching. OAG
Hello Chele and welcome to my videos. I have found that if I don't use something to increase the volume, then I will sow the seeds much too close together, this way helps. Thanks for watching. OAG
What a wonderful video! I shelled many peas on the front porch at my grandparents farm while I was growing up. I grew my first batch myself last year and am trying again this year. I have a small garden and small space but I've got the black eyed peas and crowder peas growing. You have inspired me! Thanks so much. PS I'm going to put jalapeños on my peas now!
Hello Susette and welcome to my videos. My videos are all about helping you grow some of your vegetables, that is why I show the steps. Thanks for watching. OAG
Great video OldAlabamaGardner! I have just pulled out my snow peas here in texas. Going to give these Blackeyed Peas a try now!! Will let you know how they do.
Did your purple hull peas make a lot of peas? If not, it wold likely be because of too much nitrogen fertilizer. I say that because you said the vines went wild, like a jungle. Thank you for watching my videos. OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener Thank you for taking the time to ask. They made a ton of peas! I didn’t realize they were vining. They tried to strangle my corn but it all worked out.
You sure can do a lot of people a lot of good. You are giving people skills that can enhance the quality of their lives or even give them survival skills. Thank you.
I just received some black eyed peas from my late grandmother’s garden from halfway across the world! They’re heirloom.. and while she may not be around to teach me how to sow her seeds, I’m thankful to have found your video! Thank you for teaching us!
Karin, you are more than welcome. I know there are many who want to learn how to garden and I am sharing my years of experience with you. I am 80 yers old and still going. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe. OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener No way! 80? I would never have guessed that! You run circles around most 20 somethings I work with😉 And you make amazing videos to boot! Very talented man👍
One question, I bought some black eye peas from the grocery store to save but I had a handful that didn't fit into the jars leftover. Have you ever tried planting grocery store beans? If so, any special instructions? I'm gonna try planting them in pots to see if they grow😁
Karin, store bought peas and beans will grow if it hasn't been treated to stop it from sprouting. The best way to find out if it will grow is to do as you say and plant a few seeds in a pot and see if they come up. Another way to be sure they will come up is to buy ORGANIC peas or beans at a health food store such as Whole Foods or Earth Fare or Sprouts. OAG
Hello and welcome to my videos. These are one of the best dry peas you can grow and eat. Thanks for watching my video, please subscribe to my channel. OAG
