Thanks for visiting the Freshcutky organic gardening channel. In the garden, I will answer some of the most common "gardening for beginners" type questions I get, including growing flowers from seed. Growing greens, growing flowers, and planting beautiful organic food is something I'm really passionate about. Thank you for joining me as I learn to grow flowers, cut flowers, vegetables, and much more. Freshcutky youtube channel and related media are for entertainment purposes only.
Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

I started growing calendula from seeds in pots this February. I am in SW Florida zone 9b. They are now starting to bloom flowers it's April 10, 2023. I'm glad I found your video because I think I was beginning to over water them. The leaves were turning yellow. After watching your video, I just moved my 2 potted plants over where I grow my aloe plants to protect them from getting too much water when it rains. It will be interesting to see how long they will continue to grow and bloom flowers during our summer heat. Thanks for the helpful tips.😊

I have a batch of calendula oil infusing on counter now. Love making calendula salve. I started seeds; will plant out in a couple weeks. 🥰

I’m in KY zone 6b as well. I’m in Sadieville. I guess I can plant them outside now April 22. Supposed to be cold-ish tonight about 44, I’m in a valley so for me 37.

I got the flashback mix but it was too late to sow before the Florida summer heat got to them. Can’t wait to grow them this fall. And the ones with the green center are gorgeous

I am growing Calendula this year, it's only my 2nd time to grow them. My 1st time was over a decade ago, so it's been a while. I plan on them doing multiple duties in the garden! ▪︎I want the flowers to look great. ▪︎ I want to harvest the flowers to make a skin oil. ▪︎ I want them to attract the pests away from my Dahlias. But since I've never grown Dahlias, I don't even know if the Dahlias need this help! However, just in case they do, the Calendula will be nearby, ready to do their job. Your Calendula looks GREAT! Mine is a bit late getting started, so I hope it will do as well as yours! Thanks for the video! 💛

I think I will try winter sowing for next season. Oh my would I love a hoop house! We have a very wet fall and winter here. Powdery mildew is everywhere just waiting for a lack of air movement. Boom even my taracotta pots themselves are fully covered in it at times.

Great video and very informative. I live in Hawaii...zone 10 I think. I have double check. I want to grow these despite the fact they are cold weather. Do you have suggestions for container growing?

I sowed a few varieties last fall but lost nearly all my seedlings during the winter. I’m apparently in a zone 8a in Europe (we don’t really use that sort of classification), but the winter has been particularly cold (-10 C) and wet this year☹️

Hello, I’m in the same zone. Do you have a list of flowers you plant in the fall vs winter sowing? Do you winter sow some of the fall planted seeds to succession plant? I get confused haha

We had so much rain in New York with the last month that a lot of my calendula is turning black on the foliage, it’s getting some sort of mold or disease I guess, has anyone in the comments experience that or does anyone know if I should just cut back the plants, and saw them again

Can you cut these partially open and they will finish opening in a vase? Or does it stop opening when you cut it like dahlias?

I considered growing calendula after seeing how they were doing for Roots and Refuge... But just to use for pest control (can't remember if they attract certain pests away from other things, or deter them from the area)... Maybe in the fall..

is it normal for my calendula flower to die when they first start flowering?
@Thorn99855

I heard they need darkness to germinate. Is this true? Is the dirt covering them enough darkness? Or is the darkness just another way of saying "a cooler temperature?"

I grew Calendula for the first time this year and they were so easy! I ran out of soil and only filled my pot about four inches but decided to sprinkle in some seeds anyway. But they grew! They’re so low maintenance.
