Tip: When using the pliers to crack the pit, I found that if you place the pit so that the seam is vertical there’s a better chance of getting the seed without accidentally crushing it. It took me a few tries till I figured that out lol

I use a cutting pliers and so far no damage to the seed inside. I let the cherry pits dry for a few days, which slightly shrinks the seed inside, then I find the seam and break the pit that way! Works well for me and no seed damage.

once you take out the fridge to put a pot use 1 gal pot and good potting soil if you start it in a small cup its justa matter of time till you need to change to a larger pot with another chance to damage the roots so thats why you will be better off with larger pot i try to start this in nov dont let freeze or dry out place near a window if poss, if it continues to grow keep it damp in the spring dont put in sun over 30 min at first ad time out side as it get bigger good luck

Thank you very kindly for this awesome video. It’s one that I was really curious about. I’m sitting right now with some really lovely cherry pits, and was thinking what a shame it would be not to produce progeny from them. By way of giving back, when a person has sprouted seeds, if there’s a danger of mildew or mold, sprinkling a little bit of gelatin on the soil will prevent mould from growing. Some people swear by putting a little cinnamon on the foliage. I would not do this before the seeds sprouted and grown a small bit, however, because it could interfere with the actual sprouting. Edit: A few weeks ago, a cousin of mine Mentioned that she sometimes she’s mildew starting to grow on the house plant soil, particularly when she’s got a ceiling going that needs to be kept a little more moist. Her solution is to spray a little hydrogen peroxide on it, other variety that you get from the Pharmacy or even dollar store, assuming that there’s nothing else in the bottle but actual peroxide at about 3% concentration. I did try that and it works beautifully.
@johnifly
@johnifly Год назад
You can also sprinkle a little cinnamon powder over the seeds to prevent mold and mildew. I also didn't strip the coating off the seed once I got it out of the pit and after close to two months in the 'fridge (for cold moist stratification), the seeds are swelling and at the point of soon germinating.

After smashing a few seeds I came up with this method ! Put the sharp end of the pit against the wheel of a bench grinder in a few seconds a small hole will show in the pit. Using a nail clipper clip the pit away using this hole as an entry point. Did over a dozen in less than 5 minutes with no damage too seeds !

I use a metal bar as a rolling pin and a confined tray. Rolling hard enough to break shells but not the seed. Sure I get broken seeds in the mix but it sure is faster to throw a hundred pits in and get more than 3/4 back in viable seeds within a few minutes rather than sitting around all day with pliers. ( I once used that mind-numbing method).

Thanks for watching my video and I am glad to see you got some trees started. I am not sure what is causing the white spots, but when I do a quick web search it maybe a fungus that is caused by them getting to much moisture. I found vise grips to be perfect as I could adjust them to just squeeze the pit a tiny bit. Pliers, you cannot adjust the hole size so all size pits get squeezed the same. Thus, with pliers small pits don't get broken and large ones get destroyed as they get squeezed too much. The video you saw them use pliers they probably made sure to have pits that worked in their pliers and did not show you the other sized pits. I tried the needle nose pliers first and found that all my pits were too small to be cracked open. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the video. I just finished eating a few and thought I've always wanted a cherry tree, why not give it a try... One question though. I read that "Cherries need to go through a cold or stratification period that normally occurs naturally during the winter, prior to germination in the spring. Refrigerating the pits is artificially mimicking this process." And basically it's a 10 week process. Is that only for the pits? Or do we need to do that with the seeds also. I noticed you only did your seeds for a few days by comparison. Thanks for the answer

Hi and thanks for watching our video. I too have chased many shells over our kitchen floor and on our counter. When breaking them I try and do it in the sink, which saves some searching. I also try to stop squeezing the pliers just as I hear the crack. With vise grips you can set them to be just a hair smaller than each pit. Then when you squeeze the vise grips it will stop just as the pits crack. If you get a crack then you can also use your finger nail or something shape and pry the shell apart. Good luck. (end of this month is a full year since I did mine and I will put up a short video showing one of my plants I started in this video) Pliers work but it sure is hard to stop squeezing before you break the seed.

What I do to prevent that is to put the jaw side of the pliers with the pit inside a container and cover the container while leaving the handle side of the pliers out of the container. That way, when I break the outer layer of the pit everything stays inside the container no matter what direction the shrapnel will travel to.
