Desert garden update. It's been a hot and dry summer, but our native soil garden has still been very productive. Organic gardening.

Plant willow trees there if your not worried about water too much something that grows fast and makes good shade for your garden in the desert micro climates are key. The reason for willow trees in your area is because they are prolific and the entire plant has a rooting hormone in it. It’s overall a great soil builder and micro climate creator

We planted a desert willow last year. It hasn't done great, but maybe it needs more water. I intended to direct the run-off from one of the shipping container gutters to it, but I haven't gotten around to digging the trench. I need to before next summer, and hopefully we'll get more rain next year. We generally try to plant tree varieties that can handle drought, and plant trees in places where they can benefit from rain water run-off.

I love that you have flowers mixed into your garden eventually when the trees get bigger you should trellis some grapes under them. Swales are a huge help with fruit trees!

Thanks! Yes, flowers really add a lot and I love the zinnias. I have been digging trenches deeper and adding some big wells around the trees to make good use of all of the roof runoff water. It's nice we have had some decent rain this winter! I've never had much success with grapes, but I haven't tried them out here yet. Great idea! 😊🌱

Those are the same timperatures and you get more rain than I do. I use cattle panels around my garden beds for tomatoes and cover with shade cloth. It is the only way I can get tomatoes. We have huge winds here. The shade cloth holds up well. Carrots and potatoes may work well for you. I grow potatoes in straw (Ruth Stout Method) my winters can go below 1 degree. I have all 4 seasons here, very arid, extreme winds, very hot summers and very cold in January and February, cold in march and ocassional freezing stil in march and April. Cannot plant until end of april or May. Still may be growing in October or early Novemember some years. Green beans do great as well as okra and squash like you. Kale does wonderful (I just don't like it. I grow lettuce in the shade and I grow Malabar spinach. I grow lots of Sage, Rosemary, thyme, margarime, oregano. Cantaloupe, watermellon, pumpkins. Have enjoyed your videos very much.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid 8 месяцев назад
Yes, I think shade will really help, since we are likely to have another extra hot summer. I have grown a few potatoes in previous years and am definitely interested in growing more. I plan to fill the space and beds up more this coming year. Baked kale chips are amazingly good, it's our favorite way to cook and eat kale. It was a surprise to us that our winter lows are typically 15° colder here than in town, and our growing season is a couple of months shorter too. We had a lot of really high winds our first year here, but this last year wasn't as bad, probably because we didn't get much of a monsoon season. Thanks for the tips, and for watching! 😊

I'm so glad you are back! I missed your updates. Consider putting a bird feeder and a bird bath near your front door that the birds love so much. Add a little web cam.

Thanks! ❤️ The birds, especially the hummingbirds love the salvia bushes by the door, It's fun to watch them too. Good idea! I do keep some water dishes for the animals and birds by the fruit trees. 😊🏜️
@OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
This reminds us of our Texas garden (we admire your persistence, which is greater than ours was!) Have you tried the little yellow pear tomatoes? We had good luck with those being heat tolerant, but also not as attractive to the birds.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid Год назад
Thanks! It was strange, ALL of the tomatoes disappeared in one day! I planted a yellow pear last year. I had to tie it up with twine so it wouldn't take over the whole garden. It was hard to pick, and the flavor wasn't great. The one that came up under the cherry tomato plant is a yellow pear. It's over 4 feet tall already. Maybe we'll get a few ripe ones before it freezes. 😊🍅

Are you going to try tomatoes? If yes, could you share the name . I am in central Texas and haven't found a variety that will produce in 100+ temps
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid 11 месяцев назад
The little yellow pear tomatoes do really well, but they don't have a ton of flavor. The one I grew last year was HUGE. One came up late this year under my cherry tomato plant that died. It's producing well now, but we will probably get a freeze soon. 🌱🌞

You all are amazing! So MUCH, so well done, and in such little time! Have you researched using biochar for soil improvement? I'm in SV, west of you, and have noticed more vigorous plant growth and veg production in the test beds i applied it to last year. Plan to apply to my fruit trees and grapes this year. Looking into producing my own. Great channel!

Thank you April, this was a terrific recap of your garden journey. Your gladiolus and other flowers are a terrific addition. Add some Epsom salts around tomatoes and other acid loving plants. Adding pulverized lime to sweeten the cucumber soil. Wishing you and Red a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together with your family. Peace friend.

Thanks, I'll look into it for next year. Thanks also for the always kind and encouraging comments! 😊🍂 We have already been down into the 30°s at night, hopefully we'll have a few more weeks before the first freeze.

@@RedandAprilOff-Grid If Red is soaking in a tub of water with Epsom Salts for his back, save the water and give it to your plants now. The magnesium sulfate will reside in the ground, promoting healthy root growth for your fruit trees. Peaceful greetings from the southeastern shore of the Great Swamp Erie.

@AfterTheRains

Given the pest load and heat you did really well. If any of the cucumber plants were trying to go to seed that would make the cucumbers very bitter. It must be difficult stopping plants going to seed in your heat.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid Год назад
Thanks, I was worried about the beetles and grasshoppers, they were getting pretty bad by the end of the season last year. They are mostly all gone now, and I haven't need to spray in awhile. I try to pick the cucumbers fairly young. It was pretty random, some were good and some weren't. I had the same issue when we lived in Texas. It sounds like something is missing in the soil, I'll research it more before I plant next year. 🌱🌞

May I ask what hardiness zone you are in? I live in the upper desert of California (8b) where the biggest challenge is the wind.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid 6 месяцев назад
We are zone 7 and sometimes get temperatures down into the single digits. Our last freeze is typically at the end of April. Spring is quite windy here too. The garden wall helps some, and I use blocks and plastic containers to help protect seedlings from the wind, cold, and the birds. 🌱🌞

Did you add any compost. Have you had any issues with the desert rats in the garden. Did you plant At onions or garlic.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid Год назад
I dump my kitchen scraps in the trench by the fruit trees. The animals pick through it so there's not a lot left, but the fruit trees get a little of it. In the spring, I trapped a couple of groundhogs and a ground squirrel in the garden but haven't had any more. Mice chewed on the squash vines some, but I caught them. Last year towards the end of the season rats started getting in the beans. They like the dried ones I was saving for seeds. This year I'm not letting anything go to seed so they haven't been an issue so far. I planted one garlic clove that had sprouted. It's probably ready to pick. I also planted some dill, and it did pretty well. I'll probably fill up the space more next year, but wanted to save room to get the wheelbarrow in to add mulch. 🌞

around the periphery why dont you plant butterfly pea vine and some passion fruit ? they grow on the metal structure and will produce tons of flowers for tea and as well as producing lots of pods for seeds that you can grow, sell and or feed sprouts to your chickens, they will take over plus they are legumes so you will have your own nitrogen rich mulch.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid
@RedandAprilOff-Grid 10 месяцев назад
We are a zone 7 out here, so it doesn't sound like either would be well suited for our climate. The pea vine flower is the same color as the morning glories that we sometimes get during the monsoon season. Beautiful! 🌱🏜️

We made two trips to Iowa farm country & I found wild asparagus in the road ditches. Dug some up and planted it here in Gilbert. Been 3 years no trouble surviving the summer heat & I now have 7x3 ft forest of asparagus. I did keep a very slow drip this year from the garden hose as we had no rain. I didn’t over harvest and it continues to spread.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I would love to grow asparagus but wasn't sure if it would be worth it. Maybe I'll try to get some started in the new raised bed, but first I'll need to add some sand to it. 🌱🌞
