How do forests grow in the desert? How is Israel the only country in the world with more trees in it now than there were 100 years ago? Watch how KKL-JNF makes the deserts bloom in order to find out! www.kkl.org.il/eng/
A very inspiring initiative by KKLJNF. it should be adopted as a role-model for entire nations of world, especially those having arid topography. Keep the good works up.
iam from Greece and i am ecologist.i love the nature, and in my country i plant trees.i love the environment. i have to say a big BRAVO from the bottom of my heart for the israel !!! you are the best !!!! i wish all people treat to nature so good as israel, cause planting trees, is a DUTY for everybody who only take from the earth..
This is awesome, truly a dream come true. Thanks to the video producers also for showcasing the details. This technology has immense potential world-wide to bring life to the deserts, whether animal or vegetable life. I read so much about the Negev in the Tanakh and that forests used to cover the Levant and North Africa. The way, the truth, the life will prevail! “I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.” Isaiah 41:18
For desert and dry arid regions, a plant called "Spekboom" of the genus Portulacaria, which is indiginous to South Africa, would be ideal. It is used to augment fodder for sheep, goats, cattle and wildlife. It can extract vaste quantities of C02-gas from the atmosphere. This makes it the ideal plant for mass-planting to assist in counter-acting the effects of climate change. A must for use in any greenbelt program to roll back desert regions.
Somewhere outthere is a tree my children sponsored as to celebrate my birthday in 2005... I can recommend it to everyone ! 🌲 ! The tree has to be 12 years old by now. I just love it. It is very spiritual too. Thank you Israel !
They are providing Swales which collect water from the water shed area and recharge the ground water table as the swales make damp climate around them eucalyptus is the best plant to grow
Eucalyptus is fine in the beginning but should be replaced by other tree species in such a way that there is a balanced diversity. Eucalyptus has got the character to grow fast and dominate. This negative outcome has been experiences at all places after years.
Have a look at what Ernst Gosch is doing using eucalyptus to kick start food agroforestry. He basically chips up the biomass putting that into the soil to increase water and nutrient holding capacity and the trimmed trees also create a microclimate. As the forest ages the soil becomes carbon rich allowing higher food value species. All forest have a successional process so by using a species that produces large quantities of biomass that can do that in low fertility soil, it speeds up the process. Some people say they use up a lot of ground water but this isn’t really true because they are actually very shallow rooted. Anyway any water used is returned because the respiration action of a forest attract and create rain. You also get a night time dew condensing effect that would not happen if you have no forest. The other thing that you can do growing eucalyptus is trim them and make biochar with the branches. There are also many species that actually throw of limbs as they grow that you can simply pick up the branches off the ground and make biochar with those but you get a much greater yield if you trim the branches. This is permanent atmospheric carbon sequestration and the char holds a lot of nutrients and moisture plus is a great home for beneficial soil microorganisms. The mature logs can be harvested for high value timber as well.
Re Permaculture rain harvesting: In a place where there is less than 2 inches of rain per year (50 mm), the Al Baydha project is growing a forest in the desert too. The source of water is ....the sky. Rain. Yup. Look at the youtube Reversing the Cycle of Desertification. No need to use well water (depletes the underground water in acquifer) or river or sea nor truck water in from somewhere, nor do expensive desalination. Just use what you got. The area in the video above sometimes gets 0 mm of rain for several years. Yet they harvested 13.5 million litres of water when the rain came, using berms and 3.5 kilometers of swales. They had enough water to irrigate 2000 trees for 6 years without another rainfall. Oh yes, they will plant trees that provide fruit, wood, oil, shade, mulch (to keep moisture in soil) fodder for goats, sheep, camel, and flowers for bees to make honey. Will all be free to the inhabitants. Year after year.
+Joseph Lee Hi Joseph. I mostly have cactus videos on RU-vid, but I do have a few tree videos. Ie. Growing native mesquite trees from seed. Always planting more trees, what a rewarding passion. Thanks, Keith
It will be self-sustaining once there are enough trees planted in the desert. The Negev will then return to being the Land of Milk and Honey. Just a matter of time.
Mohammad Karbaschi Well Genius, once there are enough trees, the forest itself will be more efficient and self-sustaining. In other words, more trees produce and attract more water. Try reading this article: www.americanforests.org/why-it-matters/why-it-matters-clean-air-and-water/
Dave Stonehill You are talking with a plant biologist although it is too simple for anyone with half a brain. More trees means more need for water. There is no more water unless you steal more.
This is great. KKL-JNF shows that we can reforest the deserts of the world. No need to be pessimistic about desertification. Planting and growing trees in the desert can be done. May I point you to a new invention called the Groasis Waterboxx, this device makes trees grow in the desert without irrigation. It is already being used on a large scale in Spain. The company Groasis is based in The Netherlands. There are many films on the Waterboxx here on RU-vid, please have a look. Thank you.
Wow motivational work by u.Also plant banyan, peeple, umber, neem, jamun, Ritha, Imali, kadamb, etc. That grow fast with little care, giving dense shades
For people ever ready to criticise and give negative anything to do with Isreal, I would request you all to at least appreciate this wonderful project which not only help world wide climate but shows us all what it is to help Mother Nature heal herself with a little help from us humans. I think this is one of the greatest project each one of us can do. Thank you for showing us the way Isreal❤️. Everything does not have to do with Muslims and the rest of the world. Remember just because if few Muslim fanatics does not mean all Muslims are bad. Love one another.
May God continue to bless Isreal! Why are we not doing this in California? I plan on purchasing a couple acres to see if I can be successful in planting a forest.
+Joseph Lee It would solve too many problems here, and all the environuts would have nothing to agitate about. No agitation, no income stream, the only stream they really care about.
" Joseph Lee: Why are we not doing this in California?" , see The Loess Plateau below. probably because you are sending all your taxes to israel to green a few kilometers there for many many years.... and yet still requiring constant man made water feeds dripping there.... and apparently not even using grasses to fix the super delicate thin organic soils, or not even stopping free range grazing there so degrading the reclaimed land and thin soil trying to hang on, yet again.... come back when you are ready to do far more regeneration for far less water piracy, and in fact looking after the soil and the poor people like the chinese did in The Loess Plateau, a 640,000 km2 (250,000 sq mi) plateau, Home to more than 50 million people... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bjLV_aVRUmQ.html
The article never mentioned where the water comes from. California is the leader is farming the desert. The water in California comes from mountain run off and a limited amount of rain during the winter. Australia has vast deserts but there is no water source to irrigate the land. Drip irrigation was developed in Israel but it still needs a water source.
+Michael Davis .... Take a good look at the primary method of irrigating in the State of Israel, it remains the old fashioned sprinkler system.... and such irrigation within a desert is ludicrous.
+DeWayne Benson It might be ludicrous but a water supply is needed. Maybe the water comes from the Jordan River. The desert is the most productive farm on earth if you can get water to the desert. The abundant sunshine year round makes growing crops very profitable.
Your video informs, inspires people around the world. May peace, wealth, (clean, nice) water & health come to Israel, middle east & people around the world.
I see a huge need for this through out all the world. Imagine if we can do this in some of the deserts of India n Africa? This could end hunger by growing gardens etc. In the US here we have something called a gel soil. It's actually a gel that has plant food etc in it n you can put it in a flower pot n drop a plant in it n it will do well. I often wonder if a substance like that would help?
Sorry Wane Osmond but but if you read the Permaculture book you would know the limonim are an ancient techique developed in Israel. Bill stated as such. He gave credit where credit was due.
I am curious if they planted a diversity of trees (I only saw monocultures). That is important. Pioneer trees are more likely to assist I other plants to establish. China needs to use swales and plant a diversity of trees, as well as change farming practices.
Another outstanding video/article is the crazy African tribes man... He dug holes in the desert and filled them with dug... Long story short Termites came to eat the dug and created tunnels for the rain to soak into.. He planted trees and created a forrest in the desert... Now he's not crazy. . But the teacher...
I wonder if they have ever used the Groasis Waterboxx to plant trees. This device seems very well suited to this desert as it has almost 90% tree survival rates. Does anyone know if the Waterboxx has been used in Israel?
+Red Guard1945 Don't know exactly but not that much, actually most of the water is recycled water from treated sewerage(90% of our sewerage is recycled) that(usually) come from the near by city and it is monitored by the drop from computers and stuff
+Red Guard1945 The thing is that once you plant trees they exude a few chemicals that actually attract water vapor in the air, changing the climate. Certain trees exude more than others. Pine trees and other similar trees exude less because they can drive their roots farther into whatever soil is available. The trees that loose their leaves are better nitrogen supplements to the soil. Their leaves will improve the soil as they compost in the winter. Evergreens tend to acidify the soil which does not encourage undergrowth of grasses. I am not saying that evergreens are not good at all but I am saying a variety of trees is a better Idea.
I hope they're using aquaponics. It uses one tenth of the water compared to growing in soil, the crops grow twice as fast, it's organic and you get fish out of it as well.
@@MrRasZee well they will stop once occupiers can F*** off to have their state. un declared the partition what the f*** is the Fake chosen one doing there oh wait their father is the devil and the say they are chosen ones but they are not.
@@shivangi320 you logic is fallible! Terre is French for earth, you are correct, however terraforming is a process of of modifying a planet to be habitable for earth-like life. Humans need to stop crapping in their own nest and work to reverse the damage we have already done. Climate degradation is caused by deforestation. It's wonderful to see Israel turning the desert back into forest, good for them. I'd love to see this done across the entire region, the middle east would become a beautiful garden once again, and rivers would flow where now there are none.
The universities all over the world should teach the principles and the research institutes of this world should investigate the underlying mechanisms of Sepp Holzer permaculture/agro-ecology. Sepp Holzer's agricultural system beats conventional/GMO farming in every regard: no factory animal farming, no chemical or genetic pollution, more production per surface unit, huge bio-diversity, extreme landscape beauty, intact and clean water household, no deforestation, no hunger, no epidemic of diseases, each place would have its unique plant varieties, and most important, food would become medicine, as food grown in permaculture is packed with nutrients and antioxydants. If the world adopts Sepp Holzer's farming system, we would live in a world of abundance and beauty. His system, methods and philosophy can be successfully applied anywhere in the world. We could feed 3 times more people than currently live on earth. If Holzer agro-ecology prevails, the earth's biosphere will soon be regenerated. Sepp Holzer has already more than 200 projects in the world, tendancy rising. He knows how to reclaim deserts and turn them into lush, fertile land.
