Growing Microgreens in Coconut Coir Without Nutrients? An Experiment with Kale and Broccoli

This is a side by side experiment with two trays of microgreens, one with nutrients, one with plain water, BOTH grown in coconut coir. As expected, the microgreens with the nutrient solution grew bigger and faster, but how did the microgreens with no nutrients do? A fun experiment where I get to eat the outcome!

This was a fun one! I also like the idea of using the Coco coir. I could put the used medium in my outdoor garden soil too, which is preferable to disposable mediums.

Thank you this was so helpful as I am using coco perlite for my gardening and it's good to know that even for seedlings, feeding nutrients is ok! I'm going to try this tomorrow!

Great experiment, thanks for the video Tikki! One thing you didnt mention was the taste difference (if any) between the 2, i would imagine the tray with nutes would taste slightly more bitter? Would love to know, thanks!

This is an interesting experiment showing obvious results. Since microgreens are a superfood, I would prefer a more natural microgreen no matter the size. Thank you for sharing!

I've seen folks use worm casings for nutrients for microgreens from the beginning stage as well and it works really well too.

hi, this is a great video, thanx. Im using seaweed solution for my greens, do u recommend swithing to hydro nutrients? I may just do the same experiment with both solutions, im curious 😊

I add plant food on the same day I put light on sprouts and it seems to work very well. I might try adding the nutrients in the beginning this way.

Great video, Tikki! I recently started using coco coir for microgreens, too, but I'll start adding nutrients sooner thanks to you!

Good question, do you know how I can measure it? Does adding nutrients boost the nutrient value of the microgreen? Thanks for the question Godless!

@@TikkiOOO needs a spectrophotometer and a lab coat. You'd at least get markers from the nutes as an indicator. Maybe her next channel :)

I have a question. Is it alright to use seed from the co-op store that would be sold for gardening? They don't believe they are treated, and the price is very affordable.

The one at the end with your conclusion are actually BABY GREENS... and have less nutrient concentration in them then the smaller microgreens
@TikkiOOO
@TikkiOOO 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment, I'm not sure if they are baby greens since the "true leaves" didn't appear yet. Once those true leaves appear then it's on to the next stage, right?
@virginiavoigt2418
@virginiavoigt2418 3 года назад
Baby greens are when you have true leaves dominating. Are we seeing true leaves here?
@TikkiOOO
@TikkiOOO 3 года назад
No true leaves, these were still at the "microgreen" stage. Just bigger leaves with the nutrients.
@jujube2407
@jujube2407 3 года назад
@@TikkiOOO I def saw some true leaves coming in at the end... the bigger they get( the lighter green leaves) the less nutrient dense... they MAY BE micro technically... but nutrition at that size and leaf size is def close to baby greens if not actual baby greens
