In this video, we grew peppers in a Click & Grow Smart Garden 9. The process was easy, but would we recommend using one of these hydroponic systems for growing peppers? Watch our Click and Grow review and see the growing process from start to finish. From assembly, to planting, to watching the peppers ripen.
Using hydroponics is a clean, easy way to grow peppers indoors or in the winter. This system is the simplest one we have tried, without the need to add liquid nutrients, just water. It would make an exciting gift for a gardening friend, too.

Great video! I have six Smart Garden 3s. There are more extensions, so it can get a little taller. I've grown the Piri Piris, a jalapeño, and various sweet bell peppers. I also have four AeroGarden Harvests, and I have two Red Fire Pepper plants that are outproducing the Piri Piri plants by a huge margin. I also have three iDOO units, in which I planted tomatoes, Holden Harvest and Heirloom Cherry.. Between those two, the Golden Harvest wins with more tomatoes (about an inch across) and it didn't exceed the systems height limits. The Heirloom Cherry is at least 16" tall with only a dozen tomatoes ripening on it. I've already harvested 20 Golden Harvest tomatoes for salads. Lastly, I have seven amber one-quart wide mouth Mason jars with Kratky adapters. They work well with basil and dill. The Harvests have worked well for lettuce and peppers.

Nice to see you guys showcasing hydroponics! I recently bought a 12 pod Moistenland hydroponic grower (6 Lettuce, 1 Jalapeno, 2 Basil growing atm) which has an extendable light and has a built in fan in the middle. Might have to try this one out next, thanks for the video guys!

I just got my first 2 pablano peppers sprouted today...still waiting on the rest & my habaneros & jalapeños...only been 4 days & the package said 10-20 days to germinate...guess this new grow light is doing it's job! Can't wait to have a room full of pepper plants!!! And it won't be long...🤟🏿😎👍🏿

Seems cool. But I don't like having to buy proprietary stuff to use a product. Might be a good experiment to use another medium in the cups with your own hydro nutes and see how well they do.

I bought seeds from WhiteHot and Towns-end, and both were very generous on the seed amounts. I got 2 extra varieties each from both companies. Definitely recommended and I will certainly buy from them again

I loved this video. Thank you very much for creating it. I, too, have tried Aero Garden as well as Click And Grow. I much prefer Click And Grow. I first started with tomatoes. The plants got quite large and, fyi, you can order another set of arm extenders. I think I might have had to pamper the tomato plants more than I did, but the tomatoes we did get were delicious. Now I'm on round two and I've planted 3 romaine pods, 3 arugula pods and 3 parsley pods. I will definitely be pruning regularly as I use lettuces and parsley all the time. It was interesting what you said about having 9 pods providing enough nutrients. Ironically, I added a few drops of the liquid plant food provided with the Aero Garden pods into the water well of the Click And Grow. I think it helped, but needs to be administered judicially. Anyway, thank you again. These gardens are so appreciated by urban apartment dwellers. I'm always interested to see how to make them more productive.

Tomatoes and peppers need a lot of natural sunlight. I was going to try to grow them under grow lights too, just to see how it goes.

They made new cups now with holes in the bottom for fruiting plants. I just bought this but rather than buy the cups, I'm just doing to cut slits in mine. :D

You can also use erasable pen to label the plants. Just don’t use permanent marker

3:05 You could actually buy extensions, but it is not recommended as the lights does not mix correctly, according to their website. 4:30 They also sell "Pro Plant Cups", which let the roots grow into the water, if you'd like that.

So upon my observation The Aero Garden is the Best Choice for growing fruiting plants and for probably non fruiting plants. Most people are getting these indoors growing gardens producing food or offsetting the cost of fresh food. Most would say they don’t care about the aesthetics jut the production of edible food. This would be ok to grow herbs and grow flowers to add color to the living space.

Thanks for thoroughly informative review. I have 3 C&G 9 units that I have been using since late 2019. I don’t grow peppers, but had some success with mini-tomatoes after transplanting them from the C&G. To me the real solution seems to be to use C&G’s Pro Cups, which have slats on the sides to allow the roots to get out of the cup and into the water or, alternatively, net cups with wicks. In both cases I put fertilizer into the water and the plants grow much better than in the normal closed cups, with which I had no success.

You could probably drill some holes in the original cups. Alternatively mini orchid pots that are open fit perfectly in my c&g

@@Tennababy I experimented with drilling holes into plastic yoghurt cups and found it very difficult to control the drillbit. I therefore intend burning holes into my existing netcups with a soldering iron as I still need 9 of them for my third C&G.

Thanks for this video; very informative. I bought a Smart Garden 9 six weeks ago, primarily to grow fresh herbs, but am thinking about adding peppers, to go with cilantro and tomatoes for pico de gallo. My question is more basic. You refer to this as a 'hydroponic' system, which various sources tell me means growing plants _without_ soil. Since the C&G plant pods contain soil, does this mean that 'hydroponic' has different meanings in different contexts? I'm new to this, so grateful for any clarification.

It was pretty easy, but definitely only for small plants/varieties. You could get bigger plants and harvests with a large kratky setup and normal LEDs, but the simplicity of just adding water is nice.

It is my understanding the label tabs , a dry eraser marker works on them and that way you can reuse them.

Does Click and Grow provide soil plugs without seeds built in? Or is taking out some other seeds the only way to grow your own? UPDATE -- yes, they do, they call them "Experimental" (seedless) plant pots! In my experience LEDs that are focused do not necessarily need a height adjustment, though in this case they are pretty low to begin with, probably catering to the plants they chose for prepackaging. Overall this sounds like a very polished system for those who want everything pre-chosen and pre-packaged. For more advanced gardeners, I see this as being useful indoors in the winter, so ripening time is really not that crucial. I've grown Chile de Arbol before, they like to grow tall and narrow. They are hotter and a little smaller than a Cayenne, and it is not uncommon for them to dry out at the tips before fully ripe (even outdoors). Also, they tend to come off the stem like a Tabasco, but tend to dry out very rapidly once they do so, so it is better to snip them off instead if you want them to keep more than one day.

I have a smaller 3 pod unit. It has a side bar with 2 lengths easily added as height grows. So light is really low to start. I think that speeds up the early growth. Can this larger unit not start lower? And finally adjust to this height as plants grow?

Buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol from Walgreens or something you can write on the piece with sharpie and then just get a napkin or something and put a little alcohol on it and the sharpie rubs right off I should say I haven’t used this so I’d do a little test first but it looks like smooth plastic so it should work great

Yes, I've been using 99% isopropyl for this purpose for years (I keep it around to clean electronic circuit boards without introducing water). 70% and 91% work too but not as well.

Ha, if you think that is a big tangle of roots, try green beans. They thrive. They produce super quick. The problem is that the root mat is so dense it actually blocked water flow. I have a different brand that is larger and 3 tier. Indoor hydroponics do great with greens and herbs. I even grew a variety of Itty bitty eggplant. I think it's awesome you got peppers to grow!

I was looking into getting something like this, and the aero garden was another top pick. Did you like it better or the same. I know you mentioned a couple things about it with the roots. We're looking at using it for Aji Charipitas. I feel like it might be a bit of a draw over which might be better.

Hm, with the charapita either would work. The aerogarden was more messy, but you can definitely get bigger plants. If you want to grow just a handful of pods, along with other stuff like herbs, the click and grow may be a better choice

I've grown peppers before, but usually change to bigger pots before they get close to root bound. How large do you think a variety of pepper plants, mostly jalapeño, could get if I kept them in 6"x6" pots once transferred from my seed tray. Would the yield be worth it? Could I give them some additional nitrogen and slightly less RAW phosphorus and potassium early on, to maximize the size before they become root bound? I've seen huge pepper plants in small pots, and just want to know how to achieve that large of a plant without using a bunch of my 7 gal grow bags lol. They are mostly just heavy and make transporting inside quite a pain. It starts to get cold here a month or two before the super hots are ready. Love your videos. Keep up the good work!

6” x 6” will definitely reduce plant sizes for most pepper varieties, including jalapeños. Nutrients and light can really only go so far. But I say you should test it out yourself and try to find a sweet spot for container size for whatever varieties are most important to you

@@PepperGeek I suppose there are too many variables to give a definitive answer. I could always have several of a few different sized pots/bags and keep them in rows, and give the rows different nutrient blends. I'm looking forward to see what varieties you grow over the summer 🤤

Absolutely, in fact I think this system would be better than others like the aerogarden because it forces the root systems to remain smaller and more manageable. The plants are super easy to just pop out and transplant like you would any other young plant

@@PepperGeek Wouldn't they tend to be very root-bound pretty quickly? The roots of my peppers fill up a 3.25" square pot in just a few weeks, and those little round pots look way smaller. I suppose they might be good for the very first stages of seed starting.

Do I have to buy a new pods every time I need to plant or I can do my own and put my own seeds and soil. Actually i live in a long winter time country so I need it for the winter time only or for my plants which cannot continues living in a winter time outdoor

It's not hydroponic though. Hydroponic gardening uses water as the medium and this would mean no soil is required so the roots would be submerged in the water. The pods contain soil and the tank is just for water supply

It might make pepper seeds germinate faster. But I'd worry about whether the system is designed to run warmer than typical room temperature.

Yes it would be incredibly easy to transplant from this setup into soil. However, you only get 9 slots

@PepperGeek thanks! My kids and I were gifted a unit. I often start tomato and pepoer seeds around this time to put in the garden, so I just wondered. I've got gardens on my mind! I'll try it mostly to satisfy my curiosity. It's true this might not be enough for gardens!

looks like peat or coco coir ..something that has no nutrients in it anyway...likely to keep algae from growing in the tank and to help keep the plants small... I experimented with 100% coir but not in a hydroponic setup and I had a lot of difficulty due to the lack of nutrients...My ferts instructions said for 100% coir, water and feed every day but I just couldn't accept fertilising every day, so I didn't and well...maybe i should have? Nothing grew taller than 4 inches..

The pods contain a patented “smart soil” that nourishes the plants for several months. Nothing additional is needed to be added to the system, but water periodically. They may resemble coir, but they are very different.

Quick question would you know why a pepper plant is turning purple at the internodes? Thank you....

Totally normal, many varieties have low levels of anthocyanins, causing purplish blushing, especially at the nodes. Some plants are completely dark from super high levels, too

Could the dry end on the Chile de Árbol actually be blossom end rot, caused by Calcium deficiency?

It doesn’t seem like your typical blossom end rot as the pepper is turning red rather than gray/black like you might expect from blossom and rot. The pepper now seems to be ripening to red

An excellent thought, but in my experience this is just normal Chile de Arbol behavior. And blossom end rot is way more common on tomatoes than peppers.

I don’t think I’d recommend it for bigger fruiting plants. I guess click and grow makes a different type of cup that allows the roots to grow through, so with those maybe

If over watering is bad for plants, how can they thrive in such condition? Never understood hydroponics.

Roots can adapt, and if they are grown consistently in a certain environment they do that. Pepper roots still need air though, so there needs to be some open air space on some part of the root system. I agree though, seems unintuitive to just plop roots into water!

Aquaponics is even more fascinating! This combines, aqua culture, the cultivation of fish and other organisms, with hydroponics. This creates a symbiotic environment in which the fish waste provides organic nutrients for the plants and the plants purify the water for the fish tanks! If you’d like to see a RU-vid showing one of these systems, search on Sustainable Harvesters. My son and his family toured their greenhouse. Fascinating!
