Thank you! This was one of my first episodes of "Late Bloomer." My editor and sound editor were still trying out best methods for working remotely. I had to completely re-record this dialogue (lip sync), as the microphone I used made clothing noise when I talked. I remember going out of my mind. But, I was very proud of the completeness of the story. Thanks so much for watching! There are many more videos to enjoy. Did you watch the loofa one?

Thanks for the info on how to deal with aphids. Wow they are so prolific. I began by removing the damaged leaves, then tried brushing the critters off. Im going to try the soapy cotton bud idea, so thankyou very much for that.

@FensterfarmGreenhouse

I harvested that cabbage late last spring and canned a lot of it. The heads were a little disappointing but I had enough plants to make up for the size of each one. My soil on that piece of ground is really poor but I am amending it all of the time. The cabbage in my greenhouse is the size of basketballs! Chuck
@FensterfarmGreenhouse
@FensterfarmGreenhouse 10 лет назад
Some kraut and most just blanched and pressure canned. You just have to make sure that you get all of the air out of the cabbage leaves and fill the jars with a little extra water. I learned it from my grandmother and will do it for my family but I don't want to do a video on it since it is kind of controversial. Chuck

Hi Kaye, just planted 3 red cabbage this past week. I was given a head last fall and it made the best tasting 'kraut. Crushed up egg shells might be a consideration for the slug problem.
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow 7 лет назад
Yes, I do the egg shells now. I also use Sluggo which is certified for organic gardening, as well as copper tape on top of my raised bed. This video was in my first season, and I don't have as many slugs and snails as I used to. Thanks for watching! See my latest video to see the few cabbages I grew this year. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cUhvHo5xcr0.html Also, I grew Savoy Cabbage in Season 3 and it was amazing!! +Chancard 20 You will! The biodynamic farmer that set me on this path said "There are no mistakes." It's all part of the experience. Half my stuff gets covered in mildew and I just keep going. Thanks Kaye! Luckily we haven't had to deal with any aphids or any kind of pests as of yet. We're out there everyday on top of things. This is our first garden, and the cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and squash are running wild. Good to learn for next year. *****
@mattdawg83686

***** Guess what we found last week eating our cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower leaves? Cabbage worms! We had noticed the holes, but couldn't find anything until we looked up close and found them. We didn't know their camouflage was that good! We pulled them off, and went down to Zamzows and got some organic bug buster and that seems to have worked. They didn't touch our squash, peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon or tomatoes luckily. I'm glad we watched this video!

I had no idea the work that needs to go into 'organic' cabbage.Otherwise the bugs would stay away,right?
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow 8 лет назад
+angela sheppard Well, I suppose you could spray veggies with chemicals, but then why bother to grow your own food? You can get chemicals in food from the store and with a lot less effort. Yes, pests love your veggies as much as you do. This was my first year. NOW, I only grow brassicas under red voile. See my kale episode. This at least eliminates cabbage worms that decimate your cabbages, broccoli, etc. It won't ants from farming aphids, but it will stop flying aphids. (Far more aphids get on plants from ants farming them than from flying aphids.) I get red voile or nylon netting from the fabric store. It's more expensive than row cover cloth but you can see through and see what's going on down there. And if you are careful with it, it can last a couple seasons. Eventually the sun will break it down and make it fragile and it will rip. You must secure all sides. Cabbage moths fly all around trying to get in.
@nicholasmccann88
@nicholasmccann88 11 лет назад
My cabbage leaves are curling like that. I thought it was natural while the cabbage forms. Guess I better go check them for aphids!

There are a lot of challenges growing food Outdoors. Not that I'm real experienced at it but if I do grow a garden I would like to build a greenhouse to do it in. I would also build raised beds because I have been reading a bit about it and those will help also to keep certain kinds of bugs and things out. Although it won't keep the ants and aphids away.

lol... "the birds will be happy 2:07" really nice overall gardening technique Kaye... also very detailed with a lot of edits very nice... a buddy of mine from San Diego once told me quote "Ghetto Videos Sell" I guess I took that advise to extremes with my new videos...lol but seriously sometimes very ugly ads work 1000's of times better...
@WormcastingsNet
@WormcastingsNet 10 лет назад
nah... Im going to take your advice kaye ... The vids are not really ghetto in the way they should be... use of text, big happy faces in the middle of your vids, arrows, text and more .but not a shaky video... I really am not into sitting there like you do but I could do a lot of demonstration of products that way reviews this and that... There are just so many things in the garden niche... and I haven't check but I bet there is about 2 million clicks a month in the this niche and The key I think is balancing time/effort with effective output...Your videos are really nice and might command great traffic and convert but at what cost... (time sitting there editing) SO if one could cut that editing time out some how or outsource it that would be great...P.S. RU-vid has an editing system that's how I will attach the intro...
@WormcastingsNet
@WormcastingsNet 10 лет назад
I am inspired to get better now... thanks Kaye... goin' horizontal definitely... now if I can just figure out that setting thing you were talking about on my Samsung 4G... That thing is more confusing than rocket science literally ...were you saying to soften or some setting.. I will try now before I forget.. just increase resolution some how yes?

Oh and I have a question. Half of the cabbages have become very big but the bottoms leaves are limp and always touching the soil while the other are erect and none of the leaves touch the soil. Is that okay or is there something wrong with them?

***** There is a great no-work solution for snails and slugs and it is Beer. Step 1. Relax n have a beer. Don't drink it all, tho. Save the last little bit. Step 2. Put a shallow dish in the garden near your veggies. Press it down so the lip of the dish is near the soil-line, so the squishy-slimies can get in. Step 3. Pour in the remainder of your beer. The snails love it (for some reason) and they will climb up into the dish and simply drown themselves in the beer. God only knows why, but it works like a charm, every time. Another thing you can do is, whenever you make (or break) eggs, save the eggshells. Bake them (to kill bacteria) and then break them up into shards. Take your broken-up shards of egg-shells out to your veggies and spread them in a circle around each plant. The snails and slugs will not climb over them, cuz they *hate* the sharp edges of the egg-shells shards. I can't blame them. It's like skinning the soles of your feet, then walking on broken glass. Honestly, though, they won't get any sympathy from me. I prefer to use the beer. Die, Slimies, DIE! :-D
