Thanks for this! I’m not a new gardener but this old dog just learned I have been taking off my flower stalks incorrectly! I’m going to try your way next season!

Thank you for such a detailed video. First time growing rhubarb and it flowered! I was so upset and kept taking off only the top with the flower on it. I didn't know what to do and the plant just kept putting more flowers out. I bought it last year so this spring was surprised to see that it had turned into about 4 plants. I don't have enough room for all of that so will be giving some away in the spring next year. Thank you once again

@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk I've cleared it out this morning, it's a much smaller plant😊. One question though. Some had side shoots, do they root? I stuck them back into the ground.

Morning Ivan, our rhubarb plant is from Gerald’s grandma so it’s heritage is over a hundred years. We love the flower on ours it’s huge 😂😂. But we have 2 plants so we let one flower and cut the other. Thank you for sharing as always 🐝 safe

Thanks for this comment. I moved my crowns last year to a better position. They've all taken well, even the parts that naturally split off and got planted separately. I've never seen rhubarb flower before, so I searched and landed here. Pretty flower indeed. I'll leave it alone and watch it. There are plenty of others for fruit.

@ Ivans Gardening Allotment UK great video, thanks for posting. I noticed an unusual stalk growing on my oldest plant. The flowers have come out this past day or two. Never seen them before. Good, clear demonstration of what to look for and how to do it. A cheap tripod for your phone - a small one - will keep both your hands free for your convenience when you're at ground level. A hopefully useful suggestion, not a criticism.

Hi Ivan. I've got to remove the flowers on mine this weekend and I was worried about rot getting into the crown. I think I'm going to sprinkle some wood ash on the 'wound' to stop any nasties getting in. All the best.

One of mine has just started to flower, so I now know what to do. Also, my dad planted a couple of rhubarb plants in my garden about 2 years ago, but one of them is not in a good position. When do you suggest would be the best time to move it please? 😊

Can you eat the stalks that were attached to the flowered stalk that we remove? are they okay to eat? Safe at least?
@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk
Hi The flower stalks, though, like the leaves, aren’t edible Thank you

Hi Ivan. I always thought you take rhubarb at the base when harvesting it anyway. Am I doing it wrong? I use a knife and cut at the bottom, but should I be doing something different. It's a crown I bought last year, which I left alone, mostly, just took a few stems in September, and it seems to be doing well this year, but am I harming the crown? Many thanks.

SHOULD YOU CUT OR PULL RHUBARB? You may have been wondering, why not just cut the rhubarb instead? I’m here to tell you, no! Put away those clippers and do. not. cut. the. rhubarb. Cutting a rhubarb leaves part of the stalk behind. This leftover stalk can then rot and infect the root of the rhubarb plant.

@@landofevolution9757 Hi Evo. You're a bit late, mate. That video is over a year old. Ivan did do a vid showing the correct way to pull rhubarb, and I am happy to report that my rhubarb did indeed survive. Thanks for your reply and advice, though. Eventually.😇😇😇😇
