I found some green cones around a fallen Scot's Pine and decided to see if they would give me viable seeds that I could grow saplings from. I am a tree nnovice so tried a few different methods. It is pretty easy to grow them, just do not start too early in the year and stratify the seeds for best results.

Excellent wee tutorial. I'd encourage everybody to have a go at this and when the saplings are bigger in a few years plant them out in the countryside. The UK and Ireland needs more native trees. Thanks for making the video and for taking the time to upload.

Thank you for the information. My sister's scotch pine christmas tree has pine cones on it. You can actually hear them opening in the warm house. I told her to save them for me, and I am going to try your techniques!

Noble effort, I am interested to find out how many survived. We planted 3 Scots Pine trees in our yard in 1989. We lost one but the other 2 seem quite fine. There have been some pretty rough times over the years with them. Too little moisture, too much wind, strong North winds and -30 C temps. But in the last few summers with decent precipitation they have packed on some bulk. Hopefully they'll be kept by new owners when that day comes. They should live for 100's of years.

Hi. The saplings are vulnerable in their first year. Some will damp off early on due to fungal infection. I find that after the first year more than 90% of my potted-up pines survive (better than most other trees I grow). Diseases, of which there are many, can be a problem - needles go brown and drop off with some trees recovering, some dying. Weather is, as you say, an issue - miserable wet and warm winters are probably not the best for them (like here in northern England); same holds true for the extended dry spells we seem to get now in the UK in Spring and summer. All in all, though, they are pretty tough and after three years they are ready to find a permanent home and their main enemy then is disease and wind-throw.
