Lois Broad shares stories of her childhood in Toronto's Junction neighbourhood in the 1930s and '40s. She talks about her first date, divulges local gossip about the milkman and recounts the wonders of the Runnymede Theatre. Like so many kids in those days, Lois roamed the neighbourhood with her pals. As she says, there were no helicopter parents in those days. Now 94, Lois is a master story teller with a great sense of humour. And she has a fabulous memory!

Oh so many memories! Thanks Lois - this brought it all back to me. One of the boys in kindergarten with me used to throw frozen horse balls at me! 🤣 It wasn’t until we were celebrating his 75th birthday that I realized it was because he liked me. Have you ever read the novel “The Shacklands” by Judi Coburn? It’s a novel about a family in the Junction area (and north up Old Weston Road) in the early 1900s. Judi was a teacher at Humberside Collegiate.

I loved this. My father grew up in this neighbourhood and was a friend of Lois. Thanks for this glimpse of my father's childhood.

That was excellent. I grew up near that area and used to go to the Runnymede Theatre on Saturdays as well.

It makes me think of the "Booky" books by Bernice Thurman Hunter. They were set in Swansea, not far away!
