I have a teacher who was in the Navy. He first joined wanting to be a pilot for the F-14 Tomcat but later fell in love with the A-6 Intruder. Unfortunately, after a while into training, they found out he had asthma, so he was kicked out of training. At least he still got to fly it for a little while in training!
I was in the NAvy, stationed onboard the Lexington and we launched about a bizzilion of these dudes, back in the day. The F/A-18 was new at that time and it got all the attention, but I just loved the A-6. It was perfection, pure and simple.
During the Vietnam war, the North Vietnamese Army and the Vietcong, feared the A-6 Intruder, right behind the B-52, because of its bombing capability and the amount of ordnance the A-6 could carry and drop. An A-6 can carry up to 20 tons of ordnance.
