@@pumelo1 - Old or new is irrelevant. It's performance that counts and the F-14 Tomcat outperforms all the newer planes the U.S. Navy is using. The F-14 Super Tomcat 21 is what now needs to be built. This Is What Grumman's Proposed F-14 Super Tomcat 21 Would Have Actually Looked Like -- www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/29653/this-is-what-grummans-proposed-f-14-super-tomcat-21-would-have-actually-looked-like
Agreed 100%, Adversaries would simply not engage with USN F-14s. No matter how fancy the MIG was, they ran away as soon as they were able to ID a Tomcat coming right at them.
The whole airwing in pre-low-viz days. KA-6D's, A-7's, and Turkeys in shiny paint. They had personality then. Now it's one grey Hornet after another. I had a neighbor whose brother was a Tomcat pilot back in the '80's. He said his brother said they bent the airplane when the pilot stalled the plane during the dogfight scene.
My Maintenance Supply Officer in VF-201 Dallas Tx..mid 80's came from Jolly Rodgers Lcdr Culpepper.. In fact he was in direct support of this movie i blv!
"You love a lot of things if you live around them, but there isn’t any woman, and there isn’t any horse, nor any before nor any after, that is as lovely as a great airplane, and men who love them are faithful to them even though they leave them for others. A man has only one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely plane he loses it to, there his heart will ever be". - Ernest Hemingway August 1944.
the best F-14 video footage is from this movie, Top Gun and the movie Executive Decision. This movie is probably the best. I love it when they dogfight the zeros
When the F-14 was in service, it proved itself and then some. From the middle of its career to near the end of its career, was able to carry out the same type of missions as the F-4 Phantom, when the F-4 was in service. January of 1981, VF-1 and VF-2 from the U.S.S. Ranger CV-61, were 5 minutes away from downtown Tehran, before they were told to abort the mission during the American/Iranian hostage crisis. A total of 4 aircraft carriers and 15 aircraft from each carrier, for a total of 60 aircraft took part in that mission and a total of 244 warships also took part in that mission. Stealth wasn't used back then, because the EA-6's and the E-2's had all of Iran's radar and radio systems neutralized and the A-6's had the air defenses neutralized and the Iranians didn't know that we were in their country, not until the mission was aborted. When Grumman built the F-14 in the late 1960's, by reengineering the F-111, they got it right and wasn't perfect. All the F-14 needed is the same acceleration as the F/A-18 Hornet and the the turning capability of the F/A-18, upgraded electronics, weapons system and radar absorbing paint and the engine that is more suitable for the F-14. Near the end of the F-14 service, was able to carry 20,000 lbs of ordnance.
LOL What are you talking about? F-14 could way out-accelerate the slow laggard F-18. F-18 was slow as hell. It was so draggy and lacked thrust, which meant it could not hit even Mach 1 with payload on while F-14 Tomcat (all variants) could go Mach 1.8 with 6 Phoenixes on because of the aero and thrust advantage. Once they hit 400+ knots, the F-18 would get left 4 - 5 miles. Even with the Tomcat having bombs with Hornets, Tomcats with bombs on could out-accelerate the F-18 with just a center line tank. The Hornets would fall behind getting out of the bombing zone and it is something that was always frustrating for Tomcat pilots. The Tomcats would have to slow down to let the Hornets catch up. While Hornet had a better slow-speed, high AoA one-circle radius fight, F-14 had a much super 2-circle fight over the Hornet and could sustain energy much better. Another way to put it, the Hornet could never win a vertical scissors two-circle fight from a Tomcat no matter who was driving, but if you put a 'Snort' in the Tomcat, he used to eat Hornets for lunch in a turning fight all day no matter who was driving it because he knew how to bleed the Hornet out of energy and get the electronics to limit AoA. Go watch 'Jungle' interview on it at the Tomcast podcast. He said his Super Hornet ate the dust of a KC-10 tanker even when he was in his full afterburner.

@daAnder71 A spanish speaking friend of mine once explained something about the language/culture that made sense. They often refer to inanimate objects as having a 'gender'. So naturally, that's going to literally translate to him/her/he/she rather than it.
mann! so beautiful...These "machines"(including SR 71, TU144,Concorde, MiG 25+Fulcrum&Bison) from the past would be missed badly....These are the old school, raw machines who where more organic than these modern "flying super computers" . And I love to see that She still fly with Iranian air force. Hope she fly for a along time!!!
this aircraft has a 'stance' or 'staunch' factor that no other will ever replicate-it looks like it just wants to get out and punch any other fighter jet in the face !!!
