If I was as rich as Bill Gates, I would fund the Tomcat 21 or the ASF-14 project. I love this plane so much that'd I'd do anything to get it flying again. If not for the US military, then at least make a demo team out of them.

I've been to at least 100 Airshows between my job as a Military Contractor, and just a enthusiast, and former pilot hobbyist, and I've always enjoyed the F-14 Demonstration. I can remember the Tomcat in full burners accidentally break the sound barrier a few time's, and hearing the double Boom. I loved seeing the Vapor bubble around the jet, and thinking how Bad Ass is this plane..😊 I can't get enough Tomcat documentaries. I've seen them all, and would love for someone in the Navy put together a demonstration team for this glorious Jet of the Cold War... 🛩

There is just something about this jet. I have been captivated by it since I was a kid when I first saw it. I know alk the performance history. There are certain things that man has built that were done right the first time. This plane was one of those. Aside from the crappy tf30's they had, it was somethin that's for sure.

Wow I can’t believe this is at BAF I live right by there so cool that these planes were there. Growing up in the early 2000s I would hear the race cars at whip city speed way and the wines of the engines from the A-10s coming around the ponds. Now we have the F-15 and it’s normal to have to say “hold on” when on a phone call outside as the planes pass overhead. I love it here and I love seeing our awesome equipment passing by.

As an added note: In Viet Nam it was an occupational hazard being shot at . We were a Reconnaissance plane.We weren't taught how to land the plane. Just get it back over friendly space. Then use the Martin Baker ejection seats . I could if needed attach a mike cord to the pilots seat pan firing handle. My choice , I was told the OV-1 might do weird stuff when 1 side leaves way first.

@AvengerII
@AvengerII 7 лет назад
There were only about 130 Tomcats ever built (or modified) that were powered by GE F110 engines. Like it or not, the vast majority of the planes built were A-models with the TF30s. The Iranians are STUCK with TF30s on the 9 or 10 planes they CAN keep in the air at any time. The F-14A was NOT a bad plane... that's a myth propagated mainly by fanboys of the F-16, F-18, and MiG-29. Sure, it had a tougher time flying against later-generation planes than the B and D model but guys flying F-14As DID beat -16s, -18s, and MiG-29s that could technically outfly the Tomcat -- on paper! The A-model falls short mainly in subsonic flight. When it gets close to Mach 1, the engines actually put out close to 28,000 pounds each which you don't read about in most books. That's why the plane well out-performed the F-4 Phantom once it got up to speed. Nobody's disputing, however, that the TF30 was more maintenance-intensive and less reliable than the F110... It's just the F110 made the aerodynamic qualities of the F-14 airframe a lot more apparent to people RIGHT away... The US Navy never funded a complete re-engining of the F-14 fleet because it has only so much money to cover the surface fleet, fleet air, submarines, the Marine Corps needs, etc. They also completely FUBAR'd the Tomcat program from the mid-1970s onward. Introducing the F-18 into the fleet only made things worse for the Tomcat because it diverted funding towards that program, too... and the McDonnell Douglas guys were better salesmen to Congress and the Navy than the Grumman guys were. I have my own opinions about which plane was better for the Navy long-term -- hint: it's NOT the F-18 Super Hornet for sure! -- but Grumman lost the political game in 1989. The A-12 contract was their final chance to stay in airframe manufacturing, period... It's why they're Northrop Grumman and NOT plain-old Grumman anymore.
@razor75250
@razor75250 7 лет назад
AvengerII the tf 30 was never supposed to stay in the tomcat as long as it did. it was supposed to be used during testing and once the cat went to full production it was supposed to get the ge engine and rhe later upgrade to the 110 but i guess somebody in dc had some kickback money coming in so they kept the pos tf30. I'm absolutely convinced that if they had upgraded like they should've done, alot of lives and planes would've been saved!!! the TF 30 was garbage
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 4 года назад
@@razor75250 TF-030 were only an issue when you were maneuvering at very slow speeds. Essentially, using high angle of attack at very low airspeed to stabilize the nose and using throttle slamming from idle to afterburner and back to idle to control the plane's weight at very slow speeds due to lack of momentum. They were completely fine when there was lots of airflow at higher knots as they produced more and more thrust with lots of air coming through those huge intakes and the F-14A still had great energy addition rate at over 300 knots (and hence capability to pull 9+ G at close to Mach 1). That is why the F-14A demos with 'Snort' Snodgrass were so impressive. Also, the F-14A outperformed the F-4 Phantom everywhere regardless. Whether it was a dogfight or at high speeds. It simply was superior in every aspect and took only 15 seconds from going fully defensive to fully offensive despite having the TF-030. A lot of that was because of the airframe design superiority.
@razor75250
@razor75250 4 года назад
@@2ZZGE100 true, however the 110's had far less failures and maintenance issues. I was an airwing maintenance officer and I can tell you for certain that my stacks of write up was alot smaller for the 110 than the tf30!!!

Sad that she is gone. However the stress and abuse carrier aircraft take give them a finite lifespan. Even with referbs. I read a piece about a maintainer from a tomcat squadron. Apparently in the last 2-3 years of service, it was near impossible to keep the planes airworthy. They were breaking down left and right. Somewhere around 20-30 percent mission capable.

No, in zone 5 afterburner they are dumping pure fuel into the turbine. They would go through 300 GPM in that zone of afterburner from all the literature I have read. The F-14 didn't need zone 5 afterburner very often. They would cruise in military power and the F-18 had to light the cans to keep up.
