Thought Downer was a brilliant track to end the album, so different from anything on the album but love the drum beat on it and the kind of talking/singing style mixed with lovely chords and melodies. Were Pearl Jam and Soundgarden grundge? For me Green River, Mudhoney and Nirvana were the real Grunge bands of Seatle with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains being more like rock bands.
1. Pearl Jam - Ten 2. Alice In Chains - Facelift 3. Nirvana - Bleach 4. Temple Of The Dog - Temple Of The Dog 5. Mad Season - Above 6. STP - Core 7. Soundgarden - Ultramega OK 8. Mother Love Bone - Apple 9. Tad - Gods Balls 10. Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments My stab at a top-ten... loads left out. It's tough to list these as there's so many great bands and the quality is really high.
@theycantallbezodiac truth is, there's really no such thing as grunge. None of these bands share much in common musically. If you want to make the geographical argument, then STP is out. Mother Love Bone is a transitional band, for sure. They're a natural bridge between 80s hard rock and 90s alternative rock. Their members are as "grunge" as it gets. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament forming Pearl Jam later. Bruce Fairweather joining Love Battery and all three forming MLB after Green River's demise. A band many consider to be the originators of "grunge." The "not grunge" argument is so personal for so many that it has only proven there's absolutely no consensus on what is actually grunge. Depending on your criteria, Mother Love Bone is either grunge or hard rock. Either way, they are genius 🤘
Agree with the ranking, Pearl Jam blew my mind when I first heard them. Can’t wait to see them again this summer in London. Now ranking Ten vs Nevermind vs Blood Sugar Sex Magik….that’s a tougher question…
Yeah Ten is just a perfect album. Still need to catch Pearl Jam live. I'm probably gonna end up doing a video at some point comparing those albums. Cheers fella 👍
Good to hear you thoughts on the albums James. One thing I picked up on was how the releases were spread over quite a few years, something I hadn't noticed before. Ten is an immense album, I didn't hear it until the late 00s as I kind of ignored the grunge bands, it was one of those blow you away albums when I heard it. Same with Alice in chains, I slept on them for years. I think facelift is my no.1 here, probably because it's pretty much a metal album imo. Nirvana I'd known about quite early on but another band I've grown to like. From there I went on to listen to STP and Soundgarden. I think the whole "grunge killed off metal" put me off listening to them for years.
Another excellent ranking video James! Enjoyed the vid. Pearl Jam's 'Ten' would also be my top pick. "Porch" & "Deep" are really underrated songs. I never was the biggest fan of Nirvana's 'Bleach', I much prefer 'In Utero' (might be in the minority here). 😅 I'm not familiar with 'Ultramega OK' so I guess I need to check that one out soon! Cheers James 🤘😎
Ten is a beast of an album I prefer In Utero too but Bleach is a great record in its own right I'd never heard Ultramega OK until about 6 weeks ago either Cheers Kenan as always mate
Did you just “I’m not like other girls” with Nirvana? Dude, saying that you don’t like Bleach and prefer In Utero is basic as Hell. It’s almost a cliché. We get it. Let me guess… you think “Creep” is overrated and much prefer Radiohead’s later work.
@@wellesradioDid I say that I didn't like "Bleach"? "In Utero" is just miles ahead compared to "Bleach" in my opinion. It's ok if you disagree with me... I can't force you to be right...
@@kenankustura8595 No, I agree, as far as Nirvana goes (I’m not a fan, but I don’t hate them). What I’m saying is that Bleach is almost universally considered their weakest album.
Hi James!! cool to see you doing this ranking and talking about the grunge debut albums and adding STP to the list, to me it's a great album and killer debut. It's an interesting thing to see how Soundgarden keeps getting better and better with every release and other band their best release is their debut and realizing that 4 of the 5 lead singers passed away!!! cheers and be well
PEARL JAM ALWAYS GETS CRAP ON, THEY ARE MY FAVORITE BAND!! I LOVE EVERYTHING THEY STAND FOR. BEST LIVE BAND EVER AND STILL TOURING IN 2024. I ALSO LOVE ALICE IN CHAINS AND MAD SEASON AND TEMPLE OF THE DOG. PEARL JAM ALBUM TEN IS THE BEST! RIP KURT COBAIN AND LAYNE STALEY AND MIKE STAR AND CHRIS CORNELL AND MARK LANEGAN AND JOHN BAKER SAUNDERS. I LOVE GRUNGE!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AWESOME VIDEO 😊 🩷 🤘 ✌️
Yeah, I've received some negative comments about Pearl Jam in the comments section of this video, I've never understood the hate personally. Alice In Chains are one of my favourite bands. So sad thatbso many of the Grunge heavy weights have passed away. No problem and glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching
Pearl Jam were never better than Nirvana live and they weren't even a grunge band as they didn't sound anything like the typical grunge sound produced by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Green River, Tad, The Melvins, L 7, Babes In Toyland, Sonic Youth and Pond. I'd lump Sound Garden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains with light heavy metal Rock. The grunge bands were more art punk sounding and influenced. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains would have been more technical rock bands in my opinion but each to his own. I saw Pearl Jam in Slane Castle Ireland and Vedder was really drunk but did manage to put on a decent show. Kurt Cobain had by far the best presence as a lead vocalist with the last 30 years for me.
Cool video. I don't think I've ever heard that Soundgarden album. Never really got into STP I must admit. "Man In The Box" is a good song. 'Bleach' is a great, overlooked sludgy album IMO.
I wasn't even aware of that Soundgarden album until I started doing research for the video, I thought Louder Than Love was their debut. Bleach us definitely an overlooked album. Cheers mate 👍
Cool grunge debut album ranking, James! Good to see Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. I always thought Alice in Chains are a metal band with some slight grunge influences.
Great ranking ole boy. Almost no one talks about grunge that much. All killer bands that I loved while growing up. That being said I tend to favour Soundgarden and AIC more so in my later years. Cheers James
Thanks Trevor. Agreed mate, a genre that gifted us some truly amazing vocalists and bands. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains are both fantastic and I still listen to both in regular rotation now. Cheers as always mate 👍
Stone temple toilets? I prefer the modern day conveniences with a warm plastic seat. Nice to see Mudhoney & Babes In Toyland get a mention in the comments. Rockin' stuff, Mr B!
I play " Bleach " way more than the other Nirvana albums. " Facelift " and " 10 " are also good, but not my favourites from those respective bands. Nice to see a whole video from you about grunge favourites. I like S.T.P as well, and just starting to listen to Collective Soul as well again. Don't know why I never liked them at the time. Cheers James.
I would completely agree with this ranking, if 'Bleach' was shoved to the back. Every other record on this list is better than that, in my opinion. 'Ten' had to be number one, even though I prefer Alice In Chains as a band. Great stuff as always.
Have to agree with that order as well. Dont care what anyone says about PJ they get a lot of shit until the naysayers go and listen to that unplugged version of Black and then 'get it'...grunge over nu-metal anyday for me. Cheers James.
Yeah Pearl Jam get a lot of unnecessary shit. But your right, that Unplugged version of 'Black' is absolutely phenomenal stuff. Cheers fella and thanks for watching. Much appreciated
I do wonder if Alice In Chains weren't from Seattle then would they have ever picked up the Grunge tag? Maybe not! Cheers for watching fella. Much appreciated
I'll be honest i didn't listen to grunge much when it 1st came out i started checking out those bands in the late 90s i probably listen to bleach and face-lift the most out the albums you showed it's just sad that 4 out the 5 singers are no longer with us all went way too young
I rank em a bit differently.. 1. Stone Temple Pilots - Core 2. Alice in Chains - Facelift 3. Pearl Jam - Ten 4. Soundgarden - Ultra Mega OK 5. Nirvana - Bleach
My list Bleach and Ultra Mega OK joint first Facelift Core (not the biggest STP fan, but I don't mind them) I don't like Pearl Jam . They can "Get in the bin" as you would say. Enjoyed the vid
what about Red Hot chill peppers , ? they should go with these guys? I have that Alice in Chains on cd!!! you like 10 better than Face lift I understand everybody hears music differently but even you said Cantrell has amazing guitar playing I would take Facelift over 10 . it's your choice
Chilli Peppers are a different style so I was never going to include them in this video. Musically I find Alice In Chains more interesting but i find Pearl Jam's 10 to just be a perfect album. Facelift is good, but for me AIC went on to make better albums. Thanks for watching and commenting
To me Mudhoney,s first album is better than all of the album's on your list. Although Bleach is close and they are still releasing great stuff to this day
I think I'd rank these the same as you actually but I don't care for the Soundgarden album tbh. If you don't know these albums they are good and well worth giving a try.... Live - Throwing Copper Mudhoney - SuperFuzz Bigmuff Mudhoney - Mudhoney Gruntruck - Push Mindfunk - Dropped Mother Love Bone - Apple Babes in Toyland - Fontanelle All good those if you're in the grunge mood mate.
Fuck I completely forgot about that Live album, it's an absolute monster of an album and I should have included it. Lots of bands names I've heard but never got round to checking out. Thanks for the recommendations mate
Pearl jam 10 love that album. That's the only album that I have by them. Nirvana bleach album still there best for me. Negative creep was covered by Fear factory and also Machine head. Soundgarden Bad motor finger is there best. May I ask you something. Does it cost you anything to do your video's ? As I was thinking about doing the same myself, but Am not to sure how to go about it.
Yeah, Ten is amazing. I didn't know Fear Factory and Machine Head had both covered Negative Creep. As far as making videos goes, the only thing you really need to buy is a tripod for your recording device for when you are filming. Hope that helps fella
@theycantallbezodiac know nothing about? 😂😂😂 I've been listening to these bands for 30 years. Plus I clearly say at the start of the video I'm taking a look at the albums by the bands considered to be the 'Big 4' Grunge, I included STP because I'm a fan and wanted to include them as well!
Pearl Jam sucks and is awful political garbage. Which I don’t like mixed with my music. Also, Facelift was def more of a metal release than it was grunge. Really there’s not one grunge song on the whole album. That’s why they were included on the Clash of Titans tour!
There's definitely a Metal side to Alice In Chains but they are labas Grunge so their In the video. Pearl Jam has never sucked and music is music, I pay no attention to any political connections to any music
