The engine and transmission for this car have been painstakingly documented already, but the chassis needs some love. Lots of it. After sitting still for 11 years, it's time to blow the dust off this thing and see exactly what we've got to work with?
At somewhere around 150k miles on the clock (Okay, I'll check and get the real number in the next video) I'd say I got all of my money's worth from what's here. If you ever wanted to know what it's like to restore an old car with a limited replacement parts market, hit that subscribe button because you're in for a fun ride. I've been collecting parts for this for a decade, some parts more than twice as far back... but the problems we're addressing right now are the areas where I haven't ever touched on this chassis. The stuff I've never taken apart. The rear end. My approach to most of this build will be very different from the Galant, relying more on the aftermarket versus OEM. I explain all of it, and tell more of the story about where it's been and why it took so long to get here.
It's only because of all of you interacting with my content that I get to do any of this. I'd be doing it anyways, just not like this. As long as all of you like it, I'll keep doing it because I enjoy it. If you want to make a direct impact on the quality of content you see here, please consider supporting my production at / jafromobile

One wise men once told me: the best cars in the world have already been build. And I can say he's absolutely right. Honestly I wish I would have been born 20 years before. I'm watching your videos since a loooong time ago and I just want to say one thing: please don't ever stop doing what you are doing. We really love you.

WOOHOO! This is the one we've been waiting for, and it's so good to see her back in the spotlight. It was heartbreaking when the 7-bolt died, but it's awesome to see the GSX's more than decade of patience has paid off in the form of the nicest parts. She deserves no less, so excited!

@@erikshepherd7088 Thanks, and I'm not kidding about all those other GSX videos over these years. That statement I made in the opening scene... A restoration is a comprehensive, staged effort. It's hard to mentally connect those videos to the GSX because for a half decade all I was wrenching on and driving around in the videos in between was an Elantra that's got the exact same engine in it. The entire polishing series. All of the glyptal stuff. Powder coating stuff. Half of everything that went through the clean room were GSX videos. The 7-bolt reboot. I never put this project down, it hasn't been sitting ignored. We just needed the body back!

I don’t think in my twenty as working as a mechanic that I’ve ever seen a driveshaft (axle) as rusted in as that one. You have my utmost sympathy.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
What Mitsubishi did wrong... They assembled these hubs on every single wheel without greasing the axle splines. So if you go 30 years (or probably as few as 10) without separating these parts and greasing them, they become 1. I actually went through the same struggle on a front axle in 2001. Driver's side, just like this one. Had to replace everything. ABS sensor included. Thank you for helping me remember this because I couldn't remember which one I replaced when I wrote the VoiceOver.
@kristiangnarsen

One thing I’ve learned about removing axles is, if you put the nut on the axle and put the socket on the nut, you can then beat the socket, preserving the nut and spline end of the axle.

Since watching your videos, I acquired a trade diploma in automotive service, then went on to pursue an engineering degree I just graduated from yesterday, with a job that I'm actually excited for. Before working on cars, I didn't think I could do anything, I never thought I was smart, nor had any useful skills. If it wasn't for your videos inspiring me to rebuild my first engine, I may not have ended up on the same path. These videos leave me with equal feelings of nostalgia, horror and regret. While I did some bolt-ons to my Galant, I was never this hardcore. I think the last thing I installed was a MAF Translator. Had good intentions of upgrading the Big 16G I had previously installed to a Precision Turbo unit along with a bigger front mount IC. Never happened though. Work (and depression) took over and the Galant got parked to later become a genuine barn find for some guys when I moved several years ago.

That is an amazing story! I hope the right people find your noble offering. Things get tough sometimes and they can stack up. Life seems to toss a steady stream of them at us, and I've figured out it never ends once you start winning at any of it. Thus, the stack. But it's all a matter of priorities and how you choose to look at your problems. Reggie Watts sings a song about it. Sort of. Search "Reggie Watts Stack", I'm sure it's the top hit. If you can make it through the first minute to the hooks, I promise you'll feel better after that one. It has not been easy at all for me to keep these cars. I got buried in the stack, myself.

I've forgotten most of what happened- for any new viewers interested in a refresher, I posted one way back in, "Season Opener & GSX Clean Room Prep" (probably a few mistakes): 2005- 324hp/312tq - 7 bolt JE 9:1 pistons, HKS 264/272 cams, Big16g turbo, 550 injectors, MAFT, 3" Apexi N1 exhaust, Walbro 255lph fuel pump, untuned 2/4/06- 320hp/320ftlb after tuning with dsmlink ?- Big16g turbo died (maybe oil feed line came off or something). New Big16g installed ~5/2008, at 154k I guess something broke (transmission I think) 6/2009 ^began teardown after a year. transmission case is cracked (Sent to TRE). EGT probe is fried. Maybe some excessive crankcase pressure 11/2009- 7 bolt assembly begins- added (magnus intake manifold + heat barrier, tubular exhaust header, fic 8an fuel rail, +2 an breather ports to valve cover, new chrysler coils) 01/2010- dyno, 353awhp/334ftlb. before this engine blew, it was making an ecu estimated 421hp/396ftlb 10/2010 intercooler end tank weld failed, repaired 02/2011 clutch failure (seized onto output shaft, had to remove engine/trans), this is the 4th transmission 09/2011 rod bearing spun a the drag strip. Engine was 48k old, 150 drag passed, 6 dyno sessions, 4 transmissions, 3 clutches, 10 years of use, 29psi. cause: bolt missing from transmission housing; causing clutch to engage crooked, causing imbalance. Also high oil pressure 01/2014 hyundai engine teardown after valve noise. 'excessive oil pressure lead to the breakdown of the #1 bearing.' or basically mixing and matching so many parts resulted in some oiling issue Unfortunately it's hard enough for me to remember my own projects, let alone a playlist of .. 121 videos!! I miss forums/threads x.x Congratulations on the consistency and success Jafro. ru-vid.com/group/PLbGs6OYpwJlbAfhiwcVbafB5SElRAaWZq I don't know how you come up with the time to film after maintaining your fleet, but tyvm for taking everyone along for the ride

4 transmissions... not 3 like I said in this VO. You are correct. I need to count the original broken one that I bought it with, too. Not just the ones I bought from TRE. That 4th one had only just been broken in when the rod bearing went, so we all have that one to look forward to.

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
Ultimately the way a car ever leaves this world is a reflection of its owner. Same thing with pets, tools, kids, houses, you name it. Mitsubishis that gave the platform a bad reputation were not put together any differently than mine originally. Maybe different equipment, but all of my cars' original problems all came from improper maintenance and carelessness. I bought it with a broken 2nd gear caused by an improperly performed clutch job (from a previous owner or dealership) that lost the crank walk bolt and I didn't notice this problem until my 4th transmission showed up because I never had any bolts left over. Most all of the stuff Mitsubishi put together that never got touched was still here working properly after all this time until I tried to remove it, and I had more than doubled its factory power output at the wheels during the time I owned it. Full circle on your point. Yes. But know that if you didn't do all of the work yourself to verify it was done correctly, the service work you paid someone else to do with good intentions can cost you if done improperly. Whether it's the owner who fixes it himself, or the people hired to maintain it, the car is a reflection of the owner's choices over time.

your attempt to get the axle out of the bearing brought back some painful memories of trying to press the remains of the driver's side front wheel bearing on my subaru out of the knuckle, which ended with the knuckle splitting instead. at least being a subaru, that part was easily available and cheap. still wounded my pride, though. oh, and the best part? subaru's prescribed method for getting said bearing out also involved a slide hammer. in my case, all that did was *rip the entire hub and stub shaft out of the bearings, leaving the bearings and their housing behind*.

Don't do it all at once. If your plans are that big, spread it out over time, but set goals. Remember the parts production. Aftermarket will be there but the OE stuff you'll need... get that first.
@XboxUnitD77
@XboxUnitD77 Год назад
@@Jafromobile Lucky most of the engine parts are going to be aftermarket, or easily reproduceable OE stuff like head gaskets and seals. pistons, rods, bearings, entire head, oil pump/gears are all going to be beefcake aftermarket parts, OE crank has seen 1000hp without being the problem part. It's mostly down to just getting the money saved up, and then finding a shop willing to work with me on the machining.

When trying to get 2 rusted together parts apart, and one of them have threads; stick the nut back on it partially before attacking it. It’ll stop the end of the shaft from mushrooming out.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
The press and the socket did all of that damage. The nut was actually on it when I was beating on it. It does usually save it, but I was only lucky to get the nut back off again before it went on the press.
@leefhead1
@leefhead1 Год назад
@@Jafromobile Generally ill leave the nut on until it starts moving. having the nut only partially on may have helped keep the socket from being a projectile too. haha. Either way, keep up the amazing work.

I know what you mean. You used to see these everywhere in the early 2000's. At every stop light in big cities. Mitsubishi had been making stop lights more fun since 1989, and they were extremely popular. Now I go months... and they're always a GS/RS whenever they show up.

I replaced the power steering rack recently on my GST with Rockauto aftermarket/rebuilt/remanufactured part and i ended up having to re-use one of the old lines from the original rack due to line clearance. The rebuilt piece had longer bends and protruded at least 2-3 inches more causing it to hit the subframe. Luckily the original line was not a problem and at the very least i could take the new O-ring from the new line.

Usually the best outcome for things to happen, is when it's supposed to happen. I've discovered 2023 money doesn't go as far as it used to. I wish I had some of that 2012 money stashed away somewhere but it took until now for me to pull this one off. Now's when it's supposed to happen. Hang in there these things work themselves out.

@@UCs6ktlulE5BEeb3vBBOu6DQ Banning gasoline is a fantasy. We will always have it. I know the forces trying to prove that wrong, but it's not hard to open your eyes and observe along with every other inhabitant on the planet that they're failing at absolutely every single thing they ever touch. All they will ever succeed at doing to gasoline is making it really, really expensive. People who buy antique cars are totally unaffected by all of this. It's not politics. It's economics.

To me, these generation of Eclipse will forever be my favorite ones. Tbh it kinda irks me a bit when you see a nice, clean and unmolested "for the most part" car of this caliber just rusting away or becoming project cars that in one way or another end up being unfinished and into junkyards. Not to mention that you barely see them on the road anymore.

Thank you! Impressing the judges involved hitting all the factory-correct, and the subtle details. The car was theme-built for one specific event in a regional DSM car show. It was those details that put it over the top. Winning King of Bling on factory non-turbo alloys was always controversial and I 3-peted it.

I have a 95 GSX that has been sitting in a garage for 10 years that I have been trying to figure out what to do with it. The stock engine crank walked, I put in a 6bolt engine to prevent that from being an issue again, TRE rebuilt the trans like 15 years ago and it got a ton of mods and was a damn quick car for its time. I have thought about working on it again but I just don't have the time these days.

For that stuck axle I think I'd try drilling an axial hole in it and either have a machine shop bore it out until what's left in the hub has no structural integrity, or see if I can cut a slit with a hacksaw from the inside out.

We don't have that here in VA. We have county inspectors whom have no enforcement agency. They do not randomly trespass on people's property to inspect to cite them. Someone has to call and complain before they show up, and that guy moved away. Everyone in this neighborhood under 60 has at least 1 project car in their front and/or back yard and it's why I moved to a house between an airport and a race track. I always told this individual the Galant license plate was a message to the county inspector, but he seemed to take offense to it. That's how I know. I was here first *with the cars* before he bought and flipped his house, and I am here last. That guy cost me thousands in insurance and registrations while he lived here. If the county had their way and I didn't loophole it, keeping the cars would have cost me $7,500 and could have escalated to tax liens, additional fines or impound. Land of the free.
