Differences Between PS2 and PC Versions of GTA 3. Part 1.

Since the Playstation 4 version runs on a built-in PS2 emulator. You can also consider this video to be "GTA III PC VS PS4". However there might be some minor differences, since we don't know which PS2 game revision is stored inside.

● Here is a simple mod or patch, which can return some deleted features to the PC version. Cleo mod is not needed.

● All footage from PS2 was captured through PCSX2 emulator to make high quality video in 1080p. PS2 resolution is 480i(NTSC) and 576i(PAL) and video would be in a poor quality.

Vadim M It’s the NTSC non GH version or the PAL 1.60 version, depending on PSN region (not sure if they still give out the PAL version for EU gamers though).

Headlights and light patches on the ground casted by pickups and fire were not really removed, they just do not show up due to a bug. "SilentPatch" by SilentPL fixes this and some other minor bugs, enabling these effects on the PC like it should be. Edit: Ooops, it's in the description.^^

I'm not particularly fond of either of them. I think the bumpers should have been body colored, the window trim black, and the grille chrome. The PS2 version looks cheap with the black bumper trim, and the pc looks tacky. Should have been a nice middle ground

@@JRC99 I like black/grey bumpers tbh. Painted bumpers on an old BMW just looks and feels odd to me. Can't say the same with E30 M3 tho, that thing is best with a fully red body.

About the original trilogy on pc, I think gta 3 got the most solid port, when compared to ps2 versions. It didn't have major visual bugs or missing effects.

That's an opinion with the graphical side of things, but PC has more features. Also auto-aiming isn't mandatory on PC if you use classic control scheme.

Well there is a mod that makes the game way better on pc. It basically adds the ps2 versions features wich rockstar was never able to port on pc cause of the renderware engine being difficult to port to pc.

PS2 is better in everything except for more objects and props in PC, as well as the PS2 having a more frustrating manual aiming for the M16, sniper rifles and rocket launchers. I hate it when a newer version removes stuff from the original!

PC with mods is the absolute definitive edition to play GTA 3, but vanilla PC is utter trash and should be burned in a fire. If you don't want to deal with mods PS2 is better, but modding it's so worth it.

1:12 Part of the reason I only play the PS2 version of this game on OC with the PCSX2 emulator because these boxes always piss me off. Also on PCSX2 you can bump your graphics up to 5K if your PC can handle it.

i prefer the good old classic ps2 version, brings back a lot of memories, and had the best version in my opinion. the pc version got dumbed down a lot. the only upside to the pc version is the mods. but ps2 version take the cake

I really don't like the way the Sentinel looks on PC. The way the chrome looks makes it seem like it's missing textures or something. PS2 looks so much better imo.

Head, arms and legs can be detached in the PS2 version you just had to input the gore code but there was no confirmation telling you that is activated, but I remember that in the german version of GTA 3 the gore code did not work

Original release was on the PS2. PC port was released within seven to eight months after the PlayStation 2 version's release. Check out wiki.

INTERESTING FACT #2: On PC there are no petrol pumps in Portland. They are only on PS2. It happened due to a mistake in conversion of PS2 version to a PC version. Also Xbox version has those pumps missing because it was Xbox version was converted from PC version ;)

This was back in a time when there were no affordable PCs that could stand up to consoles. That's not the case anymore. (Not saying Console is bad or anything, I'm just saying that gaming PCs are more affordable now so developers don't have to take features away from games so it can be ported to PC.)

You don't know what you're saying. PCs have always been more powerful simply because you could cram in the most powerful parts on the market. With consoles, all you have is the parts that come with them and are forced to stick with the same outdated hardware for the entirety of the generation. PS2 was a weird console in that it had a complex architecture, with which despite having a weak CPU and low memory, they managed to pull off pretty visual effects that saved later games from looking awful in comparison to PC games and later consoles.

Pentium 4 was released in 2000, a high-end gaming computer like the Gateway Performance 1500 would've cost around 3000 dollars back then, which was one of the most expensive gaming PCs. It had a 64MB NVidia Corp. GeForce2 Ultra video card and top-of-the-line Pentium 4 CPU, which was already way faster than what PS2 had to offer. Such a PC could run games like Quake III, UT 2003 and the like with ease at max settings.

So the main difference in the graphics was that PC used high resolution and better draw distances whilst ps2 had widescreen mode too.

Classic gta games were better on ps2 than xbox or pc specially gta sa imo, I have the pc version as well, but I don't feel same thing as when I used to have ps2, on ps2 everything looked so nice, and more attached to classic feeling, that orange tone, looking for Easters eggs, and splitscreen with my best friend, even if pc can have ps2 graphics and others great mods I can't still get the same feeling.

Great comparision, never knew about the differences. Do you use original PS2 first press copy? Maybe in earlier releases there were more differences? For example some 2004 PS2 copies of GTA SA have more files and unused things!

I can't remember which version I used for this video. Can you explain what kind of SA copies has this additional stuff? I looked through (1.03) version, which was the first release and it had exactly the same files as PC release.

***** I don't know exactly. Some guys who made GTA SA: Beta Version V2 mod imported things like Beta CJ Walk animation to the game. And it really works, they said it can be found on original PS2 2004 release. There are also many things that make gameplay different.

Grand Theft Auto III only have one version on PS2, the 2001 first release, no more revisions or something like that. Vice City have v1.40 (First Release PS2), Double Pack/Greatest Hits v2.01 (this is the same version of PC) and the Haitian Friendly Version v3.00. San Andreas have the v1.03 (First Release PS2 2004) and the v3.00 with some fixes like the unmarked Pay N Spray removed, the Verona Beach Pay N Spray logo different (in the v1.03 is blue with red/orange like the California carplates from 1992/1993), etc. Regards!

Don't forget about the checkpoint system that was featured in certain greatest hits versions of the game that allowed you to skip to the middle or near the end of the mission ;-)

They got rid of that in the Xbox and mobile versions because the character models in those versions were skeletal models where the ps2 and pc versions used blocky models/textures

INTERESTING FACT #1: The weapon icon in the PS2 version is a bit darker because of the bug - it wasn't meant to be like this :)

I compared Gta 3 for graphics on Ps2 and Pc. In Pc version of Gta 3, texture quality and resolution better than Ps2 version of Gta 3. E.g.g, In Pc version, some building, grass (yeah, grass is 2D on both versions, but little looks better in Pc version) and road textures little bit improved. Also cars have more reflection in Pc version. This makes cars looks little bit better than Ps2 version.

Actually, _let's_ compare them. Midnight Club 3 - No PC port at all. GTA Liberty City Stories - No PC port at all. The Warriors - No PC port at all. Table Tennis - No PC port at all. Bully - No PC port until 2 years later and it's capped at 30fps. GTA Vice City Stories - No PC port at all. Manhunt 2 - 30fps lock. GTA IV - Shit optimization. Midnight Club: Los Angeles - No PC port at all. GTA Chinatown Wars - No PC port at all. Beaterator - No PC port at all. GTA Episodes from Liberty City - GTA IV DLC suffering from the same issues. Red Dead Redemption - No PC port at all. Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare - RDR DLC; still no PC port because the game barely even ran on consoles by the time they finished development. L.A Noire - 30fps lock. Max Payne 3 - No issues I'm aware of. GTA V - No issues I'm aware of. Unless you meant that the PS2 versions were only better until 2005, after which PS2 games stopped being developed by Rockstar, in which case I have no idea how that was meant to contribute to the conversation. PS2 versions of all GTA games are superior to other releases.

The interesting thing about the PC port of GTA3 was that there was in fact a rather recent update to fix the minor but somewhat frustrating decade-old headlight bug on the Steam version. Unfortunately the updated resulted in a texture file corruption that made all the bodies of vehicles black, something that has yet to be fixed officially but could be fixed with a manual replacement of a game file. You can see this obvious fuckup in more recent videos demonstrating GTA3, where the player always drives a black vehicle. What's left that really needs fixing though are missing textures for storefronts in Bedford Point and the Greasy Joe's Diner signpost.

I think I know why things looked scaled down on the pc. It's because back in those days it was poorer gamers who used the pc. It's not like today where people buy gaming rigs worth a couple of thousands every time a big title comes out. It's because the ps2 was still relatively new and people who couldn't afford the ps2 but really wanted gta3 would play on PC instead

NotBen101 Not really, GTA III was not really scaled down since it is the same as PS2 world and gameplay wise. Only some details got cut from the transition such as the particles and reflections WHICH can be restored. Also PC gaming, high end PC gaming was still rather expensive at that time in 2001. Operation Flashpoint/ArmA: Cold War Crisis, Serious Sam the First Encounter, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein came out then and if you wanted to really make them look good a nice PC was needed, especially with Operation Flashpoint.

Nick Uchiha Look up the Liberty City Leftovers Fix for all that, and SkyGFX. The latter I highly recommend since it has the ability to use the Xbox port's reflections which outshine the PS2 version's.

But I don't think the reflections and light effects were cut at all, if you use a old enough video accelerator card, they show up, I think it's just not compatible on newer hardware. i

They have a difference because in the PS2 Version that console was the first ever for gta 3 to come and launched.But the PC was I think second console that gta 3 launched.

the safehouse icon is also different, on PC it's purple but on PS2 it's young banana leaf colour.. obviously PS2 colour is best

Do you think GTA 5 is gonna be better and have more features on the PC version ? Because all the other GTA's are like that.

I can't tell for sure, but it should be better on PC. I hope they will improve somehow car driving physics and graphics. They even can add some objects on the map, like it was in the first and in the second trailer. In other words, It is up on developers.
