Thanks Bill ! Yes, most definitely. In my initial tests on the Yoga 720 I found that the clock rate of the GPU was too low so I clocked it up using the utility to match the others. What I found most interesting was that the Asus tablet fired up a message saying it was not suitable for an external GPU, that was rubbish too :)

Thanks Raymond. It should allow you to do VR no problem. On the TV I was only getting FPS in the teens, it just wasn't recognizing my GTX 1080. I even disabled the internal GPU in device manager and that actually made it worse. I tried the Asus tablet and the Yoga 720..I can only think it was my TV as my ultra Wide monitor was no problem at all..

Hi Eric, If the CPU gets too hot it will reduce the power to it and reduce its frequency. I tested that CPU in my Acer Spin 5 and you see it in long tests like handbrake and in some games. That being said, once the cpu bottleneck is removed by increasing video quality settings and resolution - like you saw in Rainbow Six Siege - you get a similar performance as higher end systems as all the work is being done by the graphics card. I think you will get performance in between that Asus tablet and the Yoga 720.

I have a tablet with TB3 (HP elite x2 G1) but it's a core M7 so it will probably bottleneck much more the system. But my next laptop is definitely going to be have TB3, probably with the new 8th gen quad cores, like in the surface book 2. I am also interested in the HP Omen accelerator that is just 250$ (half the price of a razer core), it's twice as heavy, but can take any GPU and has also space for a 2.5" drive and charges the laptops (does the gaming box charges the laptops via UBS C?)

Hi, yes - the thunderbolt 3 provides upto 100W of power so if your laptop can charge via USB-C you will be good to go. I think the i7 8550u or i7 8650u will fall somewhere in between the Asus tablet and the Yoga 720. That HP Accelerator looks pretty nice !

yes, from the tests I have seen so far, however, they are closer to the HQ CPUs than to the dual cores (40% faster than the dual core). The Yoga 720 13" is already available with the 8th gen 15w CPU.

It looks that way Lukas. My Yoga 720 only had 2 lanes and as you saw there was negligible difference versus the 4 lanes on my Sager. I've tested my Dell XPS 15 2-1 and I get the same results.

Thanks for watching my video. The best case scenario in my testing was a deficit of about 15% compared to an actual GTX 1080 - so that will give you like a 1080 maxQ like level of performance. That is with a high resolution and max settings, but note that some games will still be somewhat dependent on the CPU. That's why I felt that the GTX 1070 one may be better option. If I recall, in the Gigabyte software, you can select which GPU to use, but to be honest I don't see a use case where you would rather use the 960m when you have the two connected. Once connected you go to the Nvidia driver website and install the GTX 1080 desktop drivers as normal. You will get better performance when playing on an external monitor. It only uses the one GPU at a time, so no sli unfortunately. Yes, your i7 6700HQ will be fine. I will be doing a smack down between this box and the AW Amp with the same GPU shorty using an AW13 R3 i7 7700hq so stay tuned for that. I will have to take the whole Aorus box apart so that should be fun :)

My Yoga 720 did just as well as my Sager...I still think the 1070 box makes more sense though unless you are really pushing pixels. I think the 14% deficit I saw in Rainbow Six Siege is an ideal performance gap. What resolution monitor will you be using?

OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy well so far so good, build solid, no bugs yet, no lag no nothing, battery seems awesome and dash charge too, but camera , well... I only managed a few shots since my phone arrived late yesterday but i would give it a 7-8 out of 10. Most pictures look good, colorfull all that but in some cases, the image can looked over processed and sometimes smudgy. I am going to go out tomorrow and take a lot of pictures to get a clearer .... Picture about the camera :))

It can. I didn't want to do it in the review as it is a loan unit, but inside you have a custom GTX 1080 with a single 8 pin power connector and it can be plugged into a PC if you wish.

Its probably more akin to a 1070 dpgu I would say.

@@CraftMojo777 I tested the Aero 15w v8 and in BF 1, 1080p, ultra settings with 125% scaling I was getting an average of 58 fps. With same settings on the 1080 gaming box I got 77 with i7 7700k laptop , but that CPU runs fast. The i7700hq laptop got 60 so I would expect the i7 8750h to be somewhere in between . Rainbow max Siege, absolute max settings the Aero 15w v8 got 36 fps (40 overclocked) whilst with the 1080 gaming box I got about 80 so if the game settings really stress the GPU you will see a big improvement, on Games that like a fast CPU perhaps not so much. Have you tried adding a second stick of RAM to your 15w? I ran it at stock and I think it only had one stick like the 15x I am testing now. You will definitely see an improvement running dual channel. For me, I would only get the gaming box if you are outputting it to at least 2560 x 1440.

Yes, you can use your internal display. You do lose a bit of performance but still better no doubt than the GPU in your laptop :)

There was something else going on - it was like it was using the GTX 1050 rather than the GTX 1080. Worked fine on my monitor but not the TV..

Did you try disabling the integrated 1050 from the Windows Device Manager?

Elmo Allén because when I was connected to my 4k it was using the gtx 1050 rather than the gtx 1080. It didn't fix the issue though, I was getting very poor performance. Same thing happened to the Asus tablet. I can only assume it had something to do with my TV as using my ultrawide monitor I had no issues at all..

Elmo Allén sorry, I misread your question. Yes, that is what I did but it didn't have the desired effect, it actually became very sluggish too.

Are you thinking of using Thunderbolt 2? Non of the eGPU use that. All use TB3 because of the bandwidth needed.

I did mention that in Tomb Raider when using the Asus Tablet. I also did get it on t he Yoga 720 initially but found out that the GPU was down clocked so I increased its core to match the other machines. The frame drops then went away. That may be the cause that other reviewers saw. If you don't check the core clock - which probably the average user doesn't - then you would think it doesn't work..

Its a lot smoother if you use an external monitor instead of the laptop screen.

Erick Veloz yep, that is why I used an external monitor.

With the Aorus gaming box the graphics card is already installed. Takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get it up and running. With the Alienware AMP or other eGPU you have to put the GPU in but that is quick. I install and run display driver uninstaller then install the desktop driver and make sure the thunderbolt device is detected. Usually requires a restart.

Renan Marcondes The 1080 one uses a standard x16 slit and an 8 pin power cable . The card in it is double width. It's the length...if it is short enough I don't see why not.

It has to be the TB3 port as it has the thunderbolt controller in it.

The CPU in the 730 is more power limited than the 720 unless you boost it. At stock I expect similar to the 720, perhaps a few FPS less is all.

Yes, I think it is. It was very stable and if you have a laptop with poor graphics it helps out alot. You will find the laptop temp actually goes down a bit.

The driver just has old drivers and their software used to change the RGB lighting, it's not needed. You can download it from their website if you wish. All I do is plug it into the laptop, have an external display plugged into the graphics card and make sure the image is just on that display. Make sure I click connect always in the Throttlestop settings. Download desktop driver from Nvidia.com , restart. Sometimes I have to unplug the thunderbolt cable and plug it back in again. In device manager it should list the 1080 and your laptop GPUs. Install MSI afterburner and configure the on screen overlay to show the GPU clock speed and play a game. You should be able to tell if the 1080 is being used. Msi afterburner will also show the driver version being used.

If your system has a shared heat pipe design like most of them then yes, the CPU is cooler running via the eGPU. I'm thinking back to my yoga 720 and I think it was about 5 to 10 degrees cooler.

SunSon29 it's easy to take apart to see what the noise is. It's probably one if the fans. You have the 120mm fan over the GPU and you have a smaller fan to cool the power supply. Perhaps something is slightly loose ? I installed the graphics driver directly from Nvidia's website. I recommend doing that as you will get the latest. In their utility make sure it is showing the GPU . I imagine you have the gtx 1070 so make sure the clock speed is correct, should be anywhere from 1680 to 1800 mhz. What resolution are you playing at ? 1920 x1080 ? A Gtx 1070 at ultra would get about 70 fps in that game. Even 20% less would be mid 50s . Perhaps you are CPU limited.

SunSon29 looks like the latest firmware is F1.0 h2d which improves the bandwidth. I would install that if you haven't done so already. Your CPU should be good so I would definitely check the clock speed of the GPU.

SunSon29 their should be a utility from there support page, looks like the one in my video , that shows the click speed . Should be around 1680 to 1800 mhz. You can always check it via GPU-z or hwinfo64 .

Yes and Yes. Though if you already have 1060, what's the point of the 1080 box? Your performance gain will be minimal, about 10%, given the $600 extra cost.

Renato Motta Pinheiro When the GPU is the mining factor like you will be at that 4k resolution you should see about a 15% loss in performance of a GTX 1080 due to the bandwidth loss on the TB3. That will mean it will be like an overclocked GTX 1070 so you should be okay. That is like 30% improvement on what you have now. Yes, you can use the the gaming box to play VR. I did a video using my Dell XPS 13.

Sorry for so many questions, you said that because of the speed of TB3 I'm going to have a performance similar to that of a GTX 1070, I have the possibility to ask for the refund of my laptop that is new and to buy a Dell Alienware with the same configuration of the my Predator, but with GTX 1070 8GB. It would cost the same amount of the refund added to what I would pay in the Aorus Gaming Box GTX 1080, but with the advantage of not having to carry the laptop and the box ... I live in 2 houses and I live between 2. One more thing, for $ 150 , 00 more I can buy alienware already with i7 8750H, 8th generation. What do you find most interesting? Alienware Dell GTX 1070 / i7 8750H / 16GB ram or Predator Acer GTX 1060 / i7 7700HQ / 16GB ram / Aorus GAming Box GTX 1080. Thanks again and hope you have understood the issues.

I agree with your thought process. The i7 8750h definitely helps in games over the i7 7700hq and one other advantage you have with the AW17 is the use of the AMP. I bought mine for $135 refurbished - sure its bigger but you can say out in a GTX 1180 in there in the future. In my testing you gained about 5% over the TB3 solution too.

I would say its probably not worthwhile. I looked back at my benchmarks and in BF1 the box got 77 fps whilst my GTX 1060 laptop got 72 fps.

What are your laptop specs? Have you checked to see what the GPU clock speed is in the Aorus utility? Should be about 1800 Mhz if I recall.

MabuSoda did you also see tearing when you enabled vsync?

it was mostly dropped fps and performance. it went down to 40 fps at minimum settings for r6 siege, from the original 60 fps at high settings

MabuSoda yeh, at minimum settings you are being CPU dependent, the GPU in the box is being under utilized. Same happens if you lower the resolution . Yeh, to get best out if it you want high settings and at least 1080p, if not 2560x1440
