Dude I love the way that you broke this down and built is back up from the ground up. Thank you for explaining the difference between the two clave patterns. Ha, the left had is where it becomes tricky? This whole beat was tricky for me, the left hand just put it into overdrive. Great lesson, I think this will be a groove that may take months for me to fully get comfortable with.
Juan Carlito Mendoza my pleasure. My buddy who plays congas first turned me on to this groove in the 90's lol and we would jam it for hours with me on the kit. But I never understood it like you just showed in this video. I used to just groove with bass drum, rim shots, hi hat and ride staying in the off beats. The way you explain the main groove makes so much more sense lol

@michaelbasakjr Hey bro, thanks for checking out the videos. This is just one out of many variations! This is just a suggestion. You can do the regular Pallito or Gua Gua pattern as well. Thanks! BTW nice videos yourself. I'm classically trained as well and appreciate your versatility. Take care and God Bless!!!
Thanks! This is exactly what I have been searching for! You break it down better than any other video I have seen. I'm trying to play "Ray's Guaguanco" (from the movie "The Mambo Kings") with our big band. Unfortunately my independence is not good, so I need to pick out the important parts (rhumba clave) and try to fill in the rest while kicking the band's accents.
You lost me. You started talking about the 3:2 Rumba clave, but once you got the groove going later, I didn't hear the clave part. What am I missing? Do I need a 3rd arm to do this? LOL
