The Dragonair-Dragonite evolution is based on a legend in Korean mythology, where an Imugi, a snake, wants to become a dragon. That's what Dratini represents. Dragonair then has those pearls, which represent a Jewel called Yeouiju, and when an Imugi touches it, it can become a dragon. That is why it evolves into Dragonite

Fun fact, in legends Arceus for Octillery’s dex entry Lavenotn states that he doesn’t understand how remoraid evolves into it and when he told others that it did, they didn’t believe him.

Apparently they were supposed to, along with Lilllipup being a pre-evolution to Growlithe, but then they decided that B/W were only gonna include Gen 5 pokemon so they scrapped the idea. Still stupid, but it makes a little sense if you squint

Funny enough with the shellder one, the thing on slowbros tail is technically a shellder. And in Pokemon Snap, you had to get a shellder to bite a slowpoke to get it to evolve. So technically both of those answers are correct.

There is actually a biological inspiration for the Shelmet/Karrablast evolution! Karrablast is inspired by a Scaphinotus beetle. Better known as a Snail-eating beetle! ...so yeah, Karrablast during the trade tries to eat Shelmet alive, takes its shell, while Shelmet just nopes out.

I always thought Slowpoke should have been another one of those situational evolutions. Like how you need at least one pokeball, and an empty slot to get Shedinja from Nincada. You should need to have a Shellder in your party to be able to evolve Slowpoke into Slowbro.

Gen 1 was coded in assembly. Our washing machine panels have better hardware than that lol. It would have been impossible to code for these conditions and checks. The Game boy advance was a much stronger machine so they could do that with Nincada.

Gotta say, in their defense the Shelmet to Accelgor one is a little tricky even for seasoned pokemon fans to remember. I don't personally think much about Shelmet, Karrablast or their evolutions often unless I'm trying to remember what they evolve into for Pokedex reasons
