@@20000dino Eh, I mean it wasn't perfect, but for singing along to pieces he doesn't know and being untrained musically, he has a pretty good natural sense of rhythm and was often able to make a piece recognizable purely based on the integrity of major rhythmic features.

ik this is a really old comment but do you happen to know if there’s a name for people who aren’t “tone deaf” but just struggle to recreate the pitch by voice? i always thought i was tone deaf for a while bc of this but i figured i def wouldn’t have played violin or danced or did choir for so long if it was really the case ☠️

One of my housemates is completely tone deaf and couldn't get it right while listening to the actual track to save his life. I've never had the heart to tell him.

Actually hard for me to understand how can you not match the sound :D But it's good for your friend that he enjoys singing nonetheless, cause it's all about having fun after all

Nah, I think it was just to laugh together, and make lots of people less alienated by singing,because lots of people are insecure about their voices, and this shows that if you can talk, you can sing a song recognisably

honestly even if you have confidence in yourself the fear that other people will not be receptive to your singing is the scariest thing to me 😢

Yeah. It is like there are really to languages in the brain, when hearing the same tone. I could sing along with Ibo and wondered why they were not even guessing.

I think it's because, as someone with absolute pitch, I recognize things based on pitch whereas tone deaf people only have rhythm to go off of reliably. Take a very well-known rhythm and clap it, I could probably guess it. But sing it with every note wrong and I'll be confused. To someone who's tone deaf, it's probably not much different than clapping

Woah just curious, how does synesthesia work? Like when you hear a pitch does a color just appear? Like say, I play the pitch C, would you automatically see, like, green?

It’s different for everyone but mine manifests with color, shapes and tactile sensations - which is the best part frankly lol because listening to music literally creates buzzing on my skin and it feels awesome! Numbers and letters and sounds all have colors and textures, and they sort of get “seen” but not seen for me. Like a really vivid daydream. So “Mila” is red purple and yellow when I say it out loud. M is a red letter, which is funny because most letters and numbers are blue/green but some, like 14, are red/purple. A lot of singing is yellow-based to me, and acoustic guitar is also yellow (with other colors in there, music is a whole cacophony of color and texture and sensation).

@@milaf3069 Days, months, time etc also take really specific shapes and colors. I kind of think a lot of people have synesthesia but they think it’s normal and everyone thinks that way, so they don’t realize it!

​@@phoebeel Without having a clue about the singers on Britain's got talent: Yeah, probably. For example: I've never noticed that a guitar needs tuning - and in my family many play the guitar. Rhythm, beat, tone...I tried to memorize and mimic all that in school and still failed the exams. Drumming "We Will Rock You" and keeping the beat? I can only do that if I stop "singing" the lyrics and really focus on the drumming. Even then, I'd fail 50/50.

My brother-in-law is waaay more tone deaf that this guy. Still enjoyed the video and watching Brett and Eddy practically roll on the floor.

Well I don't know if we watched the same video because if anything the rhythm were ok for some, but the highs and ups often not so much. And some of them like the last one were waaaay off, even the rhythm😂. But it was so much fun to watch and try to guess!!

yeah he starts off at a pitch but then starts to loose the key and sort of drifts off i think

His articulation and note length make a difference for them "hearing" the piece in-between his pitches. Like with Clair de Lune, he generally had the right base rhythms and relationships between the notes but lacked the slurs and holding out the long notes. It was like if he was tapping out the initial hit of each note on a piano without pedals down. They had to search for the true rhythms in the spaces instead of assume there were rests where he seemed to put them.

The duet part would just be funniest thing ever on this channel 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

We have general music classes in Australia here, but for primary school (at least for me) it was more learning pieces on the recorder, glockenspiel and marimba for performances - that's all I really remember. We also have band and (poorly-advertised) after-school lessons for various instruments but nothing for vocals unless you joined the choir. High school is where they start going into music theory. I unfortunately was more interested in practical instead of theory so I can't speak on if the classes were good or not. Obviously it will vary from school to school. I know you said general, but I think for the most part - most people kinda have to seek for these things? I think, not 100% sure.

@@deCASSNI Thanks for the information. I'm always interested in how music is taught in other places. I'm in the States and when we say General Music we are referring to classes given in elementary schools (5-10 year olds) as part of their curriculum, that are taught by a music specialist. It sounds like that is somewhat similar? With some variation by school district? Since school districts are local entities here each district chooses for itself whether or not there is a music curriculum and on what level. In General Music classes the children explore, experience, and learn songs, musical games, movement, dance, very very basic music theory, recorder, sometimes ukelele, barred instruments, and depending on the district, they might start string instruments in 4th or 5th grade. In the particular district that I taught in the elementary music specialists were highly encouraged to take Levels certification in the Orff Schulwerk or Kodaly approaches or both. Most of my students could sing in pitch and with basic good vocal technique when they left me to go to 6th grade. There were always a few who struggled but since I had had them singing and doing all sorts of fun games that were really training their ear and voices, and supporting all that with sol-fege training from the age of 5, they were pretty competent by age 10. The sad thing is that so much arts funding has been cut in the last 40 years that it is increasingly common for music classes for the young students to be left out of the curriculum. I felt very lucky to live in an area where music was a part of the elementary curriculum in the public schools. Again, I sure appreciate your reply!

​@@mrs.brunke443 My childhood memories are fuzzy so hopefully someone else from Australia might have more detailed answers - I'm from Sydney NSW, so things would also definitely vary from state to state. I went to schools with a wide selection of subjects, but I dropped out of music halfway through high school (again, being led to believe I'd do more practical stuff instead of theory work - I regret dropping out) but up until senior year (Year 11-12) music is just music. It's Music 1 / Music 2 (both are different, not levels) in senior years which I believe are more essays and performance pieces, as well as compositions, musicology etc. If you didn't do music as a subject prior to Music 2 you were required to have a grade for AMEB + musicianship which are just music exams I think. Music 1 just requires that you can either sing or play an instrument. I don't know the qualifications of my music teachers in the classes when you refer to specialists but I knew they were well trained at least - again for primary (5-12 years old) it was more just learning songs on instruments - I think at the early stages we would sit in a circle and use clapping and body percussion to learn beats/rhythm? Stuff like vocal-work you had to actively look for outside of school, wasn't taught in my school unless you did choir as extra curriculum. The kids who could sing had lessons unrelated to school. A lot of the terms you mentioned are not at all familiar to me and were the first I ever heard of it. We do have a college dedicated to music called Australian Institute of Music though.

@@mrs.brunke443 I will also add on though, I did take one-on-one after school lessons for 2-3 instruments - those were way more detailed and specific in terms of theory as opposed to mandatory music classes. So that kind of adds on to that, you have to seek for music classes yourself for something more in-depth. I've been on the search for singing lessons personally and it's daunting? Because most vocal teachers have their own websites (to which I need to know their name to begin with to find the site) as opposed to websites with a list of vocal teachers to select from. So there might be some marketing things too when it comes to music - being that you find teachers recommendations through word of mouth, or a school, as opposed to social media (though honestly I think I'm bad at Google for this one.)

True, this fellow is not actually tone deaf. I once sang with someone who was... Really great drummer, but actually tone-deaf (and participation in choir was mandatory for the program we were in). Cool thing was he didn't just fake sing; he actually tried, and got slightly better over time. It was frustrating at first, but you got used to him and his work ethic was inspiring to everyone. Choir version of Rudy Ruettiger.

it is a bit of both. I still enjoy listening to them though and it is not severe in any way. just can't here the small intricate changes. but the biggest problem is in replicating it

I think it also has to do with the way your soundwaves travel along your bones when you sing. (Yes, when you sing you not only hear the soundwaves coming through the air into your ear but also traveling along your jaw and stuff, that is also why your voice sounds different than you think it does) Somewhere along that line the changes in the notes you think you sing get lost. My ex was able to play the trumpet just fine and did hear it when other people or instruments were off, but was utterly tonedeaf when singing, even worse than Ibo. Sidenote: Unfortunately being able to sing is a recessive gene... not looking forward to hearing my kids sing, my fiance is tonedeaf as well :-(

100%. I have met one person ever who was genuinely tone deaf. Most people aren't, they just aren't practice at using their voices. You can tell this guy has a sense of relative pitch.

What people fail to understand is that it’s a spectrum. Some people can hear differentiation but cannot replicate them, and it’s not just “being a bad singer.” This guy definitely is in that camp. He has very little sense of relative pitch when singing but can obviously hear pitches. Some people are what I would call profoundly tone deaf which means they can’t even recall or “hear” tone differences in pieces AT ALL. And within those categories there are shades of skill and ability. Like regular blindness or deafness, it’s not as if you flip a switch and everyone who is tone deaf is exactly the same. It’s not often considered a disability but it has a lot in common with other neurodiversity so let’s not be complete idiots about it

I’m a vocalist, and getting a tune right has always come naturally to me (I don’t have perfect pitch but i know how high or low the notes are when I listen to a song and I’m able to replicate it pretty well) it’s been easy for me… so when I see someone who’s tone deaf, I’m thinking in my head “how could you mess up THAT bad? Like even if you’re a bad singer it’s still not hard to get the pitch correct even if it’s in a lower key or something, so HOW can you mess up just the TUNE??”

@@PinkPixelProductions that's quite insensitive. We all have different capacities, specialties, environment, and education. Hearing something, translating it in your mind, and then applying it to your voice could be difficult, that's why it also requires training. Kinda like how you see something, you imagine it, but when you draw it your hands make something different. Not everybody can do it, and it requires practice. If you're a genius and didn't have to work for it, we get it. You're special, congrats, good for you.

I understand that it requires practice, and so for someone like me who already is developed in the skill and has practice, when I hear someone who has no practice at all and is just bad at singing, it just kinda hurts me musically on the inside. Like even if you just listen to music, you’d be able to hear the tones to get more of it right. That’s kinda like practice in itself. So that’s why I don’t understand how someone can be so tone deaf.

Some people might be "taught out of it," but I literally can't sing even though I know what the pitches and intervals should be (and I have an excellent sense of rhythm). I just cannot control my vocal chords to where I can hit the right pitch. I'm like the opposite of someone who has a naturally "great" voice. So, I play instruments.

@@NekoHanyouHanaru I think everything runs a spectrum. There are so many variables involved in music, I'm sure that "tone deafness" is never due to just one thing. Therefor, there would naturally be many levels to it. I wouldn't be surprised if there have been studies done, but it sure would make a good masters or doctoral thesis, wouldn't it?

I'm practically tone deaf as well (tho I'm hard of hearing and never had any music lessons) and I think I can hear the music like "normal"/musical people - but I have no clue what the different tones are called, how to listen for the differences and so I can't repeat them with my voice. It's like I don't know any technique behind something but can still enjoy it completely unaware of the work behind it, if that makes sense?

@@isal7022 I think so personally yes! And also learning, you need to training and lessons to understand the technique behind it. (And no worry, english isn't my first language either 😁)

I did a research project on this last year and I found that tonedeafness(or amusia) is technically like a disability and so the severity of the condition can/will vary. Some people are able to hear/process the music but have trouble reproducing said music, while in severe cases they have trouble hearing/processing the musical components.

wow, that's a sad story,..(bordering on child abuse) ... but thankfully with a happy ending. So glad it's turned out like this for you and I hope you get many many years of joy and happiness from playing and listening to classical music. Brett and Eddy are talented musicians and an inspiration. But if you've been watching their channel you will have seen that they've also been through hardships to get where they are today. Similar experiences, not that extreme though, they would sit beside the piano with a cane and hit me if it wasn't good enough but never broken any bones. I quit around 9yos and didn't touch a keyboard until I was around 22, I just self learn songs I want to now, no pressure for exams/grading, just learning and enjoying at my own pace. I'm not good, but at least I'm enjoying it
