What avoidance of feelings is as mentioned by the doctor here is actually "Suppression of emotions". This also leads to "trauma", or what is the wounds that stay inside of us in memory. I have trauma, and one of my " coping" mechanisms was my faith. This I discovered had a term. Its " Spiritual Bypassing". Defined as the misuse of faith and religious practice that tends to hide ones feelings thus depression sets in. Through my readings on trauma and addiction by Dr. Gabor Mate, I was able to find healing. However, I started to develope spiritual crisis because of the notion that it was not spiritual power that helped me but psychology. Here , is where I got to find this talk and with Dr. Matthew, some relief by " integration", on understanding that God is still above all with his mercy and love for us.😊
I was just thinking awhile ago how I would like to see a Catholic perspective of mental health from a thomistic standpoint as well as Dr. Breuninger’s modern approach.
This man is very wise. I especially like what he says about fullness of life not being freedom from suffering or distress. That is something I have struggled with-trying to be free from suffering and distress has never helped me.

This was such an amazing and thoughtful episode. It was heartfelt, at times hilarious, all in all - FANTASTIC! I recently read Dr. Breuninger's book so it felt like I was getting the directors cut of it with this heartfelt episode. This was A1! I'll be re-listening to it and sharing it!
About the crying. I find as I’ve gotten older, when I feel closest to God, that’s when I feel more compassion for others and I allo myself to cry more. But it’s a different kind of sorrow than the depressive angst I often felt. Also, I realize now why I’ve grown to like Fr Gregory Pine more.
I could have listened all day. It is such a truth that people need a space in which to be seen. I do counselling with offenders and it is pretty much a theme that they didn’t feel they mattered or were seen as children and had no ability to be vulnerable and express their inner self with others as they grew up.
Oh... welllspring... I see. I believe we are only as healthy as we live as Christ. The world is broken, any advice from there isn’t gonna help. We walk in Christ: so live, love and see him, if you don’t, say so, and then work to make it happen.
