Hi Brendan, your step-by-step process really helps and thanks for including what size socket/spanner will be needed on what bolts. It saves a lot of head scratching and stuffing around looking for what you need! I will be replacing the front rotors and pads on my `07 Lumina real soon, as once the brakes are used frequently (i.e. mountain driving) there is a very noticeable shudder coming from the front of the car, so rather than get them machined, I will replace the rotors as well and you've really helped me out! Cheers!

You should always take the lid off the Brake Reservoir on the Master Cylinder before pushing the Caliper Pistons back in
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 3 года назад
Presumably that is because of the theory that you are relieving pressure in the reservoir. Here's a question for you, how does that differ to the brake pad wearing over time and the piston slowly shifting out of the caliper? By that theory, is there vacuum build-up in your reservoir?
@marvinkmooney7744
@marvinkmooney7744 3 года назад
@@Bbeavis The lid of the reservoir contains a convoluted rubber diaphragm the vents to atmosphere, but keeps the reservoir sealed. As the pads wear and the reservoir level drops, the diaphragm extends to account for the difference in volume. When you push fluid back up into the reservoir, this should push the diaphragm back in, But to be sure you best take the lid off and push the diaphragm back in by hand

Great video. Thanks. I was looking for help to see why my front LH brakes were dragging after changing the pads and specifics on how the anti-rattle clips were supposed to fit aganst th pads in case they had something to do with the dragging wheel. It turns out that some pad sets have two inner and two outer pads and if you don't fit inners on the inner and the outers on the outer it will cause problems. I had Bendix pads and at first glance the four pads looked the same, so I went ahead and fitted them randomly. However that's where I went wrong. On closer inspection after a lot of head scratching I noticed there was a difference in the rivet heads protruding through the backs of the pads. With two inners on the RH side - no problem. BUT two outers on the LH side caused the problem. The rivet heads were jamming the pistons. Maybe this info will help some of your viewers.

I purchased DBA T3 4000 slotted rotors and Brembo 4 piston callipers for my VF Calais. I gather the original calliper stay brackets hole spacing are the same.As the Brembo hole spacing as they are one piece. I will do the job myself as you have given me the confidence. I will get my son to assist in bleeding the air out. As I will install stainless braided lines on each corner.
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 2 года назад
Nice work, I haven't looked at the brembos from the V8 models, but its probably likely a bolt on affair. Good luck with your install.
@wazzzappening4848
@wazzzappening4848 2 года назад
@@Bbeavis Thanks Beavis. It was a bolt on affair. The calliper bolts were smaller. The kit provided brass bushes to fill the difference. The amazing thing is the improvement of the steering because of the reduction of unsprung weight off the front end. The brembo callipers feel around 75% lighter than the originals. The stainless braided brake lines give the peddle stiffer feel. Stopping distance must be now way shorter. Not to be known until bedded in. Cheers.

If the reservoir is full & the pads are heavily worn, then possibly, yes. Generally as pads wear, the fluid level may drop slightly also, negating the need to drain fluid when pressing the piston back.

I serviced my VF commodore recently. Same brake calliper as on your vidio. As I rotated the tyres, I was checking the brake pad wear. With the wheel off, I could not see the thickness of the pad, due to the calliper & carrier bracket, completely surrounding the pads. How do you check the brake pad wear, without taking the calliper off ?

It is difficult to see for sure, as the caliper covers a large portion of the pad. With a torch you can sort of get a view of the pad depth from the very top.

I was doing one side at a time, made complete sense to jack the car up from its designated jacking points. You could remove the caliper & caliper bracket as one piece, but then when you want to separate them later they are hard to man handle with a socket, easier to remove each component one at a time. You forgot to check the fluid level on the brake master reservoir , after compressing the brake pistons

Fluid level was OK. Thanks for your concern Dave.

Didnt grease any of the parts with brake grease. Only 1/2 the job done.

I'm not sure I'd consider grease half the job.

The brakes aren't important its the timing chain that needs attention😅.

Timing chains need attention, but I would never say brakes aren't important :-D

You don’t mention there is an inside and outside brake pad!! This can easily bring people unstuck including yourself, you put the inside pad with 2 raised studs on the outside, this will fowl with the caliper and give you drama. Be careful posting videos which you don’t know about yourself.
@Bbeavis
@Bbeavis 3 года назад
Alright thanks for the heads up mate. But you can clearly see at 5:00 that the studs are visible there.
