In case you didn’t know I played competitive division 1 golf in Florida so I like to think that I know my way around a golf course - There are a LOT of different golf courses in the area and different types of memberships available.
Not too many people understand until they get down here what type of golf opportunities and how to navigate the communities.
Today I am going to discuss the different types of golf communities and memberships to help you understand golf communities in Southwest Florida. If you wait to the end of the video I will suggest my favorite types of golf communities in each category to hopefully help you find the best community for you and your loved ones.
Public golf communities
You can choose to buy a membership or pay as you play golf, rates increase about 3x the summer rate during January-April, don't need to live in those communities but it's nice to be in close proximity - these golf courses are not usually as "nice" as private or semi-private communities
Bundled golf
Golf membership is mandatory for all home owners (most scenarios) - the bundled experience usually includes additional amenities (access to restaurants in there, tennis or pickleball, resort pool and spa, some in this area have a beach club available)
• Setbacks: Chelsea system - based on a point system to give all members in the community a fair opportunity to golf and differing times, guests impact this, this rule is mainly in place so the same groups of people can't take up all the best tee times each week
• Not ideal if you want to golf every day at the same time
• Some people complain that bundled golf courses are a little challenging and "squished/narrow" but not the case for all of them
• In most cases you will be paying 10-12k annually, not including condo fees or transfer fees
• Beware: some communities have bundled golf to individual homes or units, there are social membership issues
Golf Equity or Non-Equity communities
Typically you can purchase a home in these communities and not have to purchase a golf membership, but many people choose to
• often an initiation fee of $30-300k, most commonly around $125k, then annual dues of $10-25k per year after that
• Common issue since COVID is some courses have a wait list
Golf pass - May through October - if you don't mind playing in the heat and want to try out more courses around the area, not stick to just one golf club, this is a great opportunity in SWFL
