Hi Guys! Here are my Tips and Tricks for Choosing a Bassoon to Buy! Finding the colors, intonation, and making sure the bassoon is in good repair before you spend any money.
AND- Not mentioned in the Video but SHOULD BE is the Vendor B.H. Bell. The Bell Bassoons are a Canadian brand that is quickly becoming popular for the high quality bassoons with a range of colors and sounds. If you are looking for an instrument Ben Bell is well known for matching instruments and a bassoonist's specific needs. Currently the Canadian dollar is low- it could work in finding an extra special deal! :)

+Ethan Johnson (Tinyman) How Fantastic! I can't wait to hear what you buy. Be sure to look into the Bell Bassoons mentioned in the description box and blog. It would be a great time to get a good deal with the Canadian dollar! Keep me posted.

I love every video you do, Eryn. Actually I enjoy all the RU-vid stuff your family does. Since I'm a former bassoonist and now a bass trombonist (for many years) I get good things from your brother's and Dad's videos also.

Great video! I'm pondering my future as a bassoonist. I will never be a pro, and I currently play on a Fox Model III, which was perfect when I bought it while I was on active duty in the Navy, as I literally hauled it all over the world. Now, however, I am wondering if a wooden bassoon would serve me better. I'm wondering if switching to a wood bassoon would make a huge difference. Have you played a Fox III (or IV)? What did you think? Would a Renard or Puchner serve me better now? I am a very happy second bassoonist, so have no need for projection or soloistic qualities, and prefer that warm, blending characteristic that the bassoon is so good at. Appreciate your thoughts.

+Paul Webb Great to hear from you! If you are happy with what you have- then no worries! I find that the wooden instruments (when made well) have a more dense and rich color palette. Every time I have found a new instrument and upgraded it pushed my playing to a new level. Again, it's about finding what is right for you and your needs. :)

Hello. I have been watching your videos for some time and I have been wondering: How are you able to stay in tune. I switched from clarinet to bassoon about 3 months ago and I am having the hardest time keeping certain notes in tune and others sounding nice. I don't know if it is the bassoon or the embouchure, but every time I try and play a C# , E and E flat on the staff, it is always incredibly out of tune. Sometimes the E reads as an E flat and the C# reads as a C that is just relatively sharp. I would love if you would create a blog post maybe even a video on ways that I may be able to improve my intonation.

+Brainsicles Hi there! Thanks for watching and great to hear from you. The E and the C-sharp are two notes that lose stability as reeds die. If when you first buy a reed it is flat on those notes- the reed may be too long, the first wire not secure, etc. My best guess from your comment is that your set up isn't matching the reed. If you have a shorter bocal- (Smaller Number) try that- it could help. Or order shorter reeds. :) Hope this helps!

Eryn Oft Thank you for the quick reply! I did further testing with a reed that was on its way out (the opening was a smile and was extremely flat) today and when I cut it shorter, the stability seemed to improve quite a bit with all of the notes, especially the E and C sharp.

+Brainsicles Good! Glad to help! Try to keep the length consistent in all of your reeds. It can help you create a consistent use of air and embouchure. GOOD LUCK to you! :)

+nitai chandra g. Aiello Thanks for Watching- I'm so glad you like them. I must admit I do not have experience with Mirafone so I can't give you a positive or negative on this. I suggest- try it. If you love it, you're on the right track. And have a professional near you look at it for scary things- like broken keys, rot, etc. Wish I could be more help! :)

+Eryn Oft Hey there! I was accepted to the school of my dreams for music and I am going there with bassoon! I just recently bought my very first bassoon. I had my Professor at the school try out my instrument and make sure it was a good instrument and it turned out to be great for what I wanted/needed. Although this bassoon is not a common name brand bassoon. It's the Oscar Adler Sonora brand. If you have any information on the Adler company that'd be great! The only information i found was that it was a German company, it's a brand not really sold in the USA but usually in Europe, and that i found the serial number and i know what year my specific instrument was made. According to bassoons.org. Is there any website or information you have? It'd be great! Thanks!

Sammy Golding they are ok for starting out but they will never have the tone colors of a good wooden Bassoon.
