Just so you know...this video has been the catalyst to a massive life change for me. Seriously. I'm coming back to it after 6 months. I've lost almost 40 pounds. Written 16 chapters of a book. This video is so motivating, so logical, and the visual aid is perfect. Edit: Thank you Casey
I feel so dumb after watching this video and realizing that the sense of peace and quiet that has been driving me to stay up late every night can be easily transferred to simply waking up early.
Ive been waking up at 330 every week day for this year to get to the gym from 4-530 before work and my family wakes up. It has literally changed my whole life. I feel 10000% better in all aspects of my life. Ive lost ~80 lbs, my marriage is better, I'm a better father, I'm better at my job, I'm better mentally, and I feel way more confident.
I'm not as extreme as Jocko, but I am usually up at 6am. Then its immediately into 30 min of HIIT, followed by 30 min of personal / quiet time. The key is not the extreme early start, it's the discipline of the routine that gets your day started, allows you time for yourself, before the rest of the world is awake.
Man, this is wild. I started going thru some of Casey's older videos since he's back in NYC. I'm a huge Jocko fan, listen to his pod, reading his book, etc. I saw this video 4 years ago when it came out, had no idea who Jocko was, then found him again on my own about a year later. So crazy to go back and watch this again now, as a fan of both
Up at about 0430 and then bed at say 2300 (if he sleeps at the gym). That's 5 and a half hours sleep. Less than 7 to 8 hours sleep a day WILL reduce your immune system. If you want to be getting up at 0430, you need to be asleep by 2100.
See, for me the discipline part is getting to bed early enough. My bedtime is 7:15pm, so that I can get up at 3am. I love getting up this early. I wake up and want to get out the door because I can go to the gym. I have almost zero traffic, very few people are there (0 to 3 others), and I have my time to myself. I'd wake up earlier if I could, but that takes too much time out of the evening. Also, 7-8 hours of sleep is vital. 1) this is why I don't feel tired at 3am. I've easily grown accustomed to this. 2) lack of quality sleep will really take a toll later on. If you want to die at an earlier age and have a range of health issues, go ahead and get less sleep consistently.
- hey wake uuupppp!!!!! Wake uuupppp!!! - what???!!!! What is it????!!!!! - hey....I just wanted to make sure if you wanna carry on sleeping or not....just wanted to make sure.....
Jocko’s line of reasoning holds up and can be applied even without getting up at 4am. He utilizes the foundations of habit building to become the future self he wants to be. Casey seems to work hard for the sake of working hard…to tell people he works hard. Tho, he is more entertaining than Jocko.
Casey works hard because his hard work produces stellar results. The guy is one of the OG creators on YT and has retained a massive audience over the course of like 10+ years.
Love your vibes. Hey I really miss you Casey, please bring them back. You are such a great influencer out there, outstanding, weird and interesting. Love to see your life exciting, down-to-earth, practical, ruthless yet kind and funny... :) peace out, from NZ
Lmao i feel you. not every people fortunate enough to work at 10. Mine starts at 8 and ends at 8 pm (12 hours/day for a week). wish i could lived in better country with better work regulation :/
*Geez, my Uncle was just like this, only 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night, healthy as hell but had a heart attack at 57 that was attributed to a lack of sleep... not good advice at all. Sleep is essential, far too many studies have proven that!* 8 hours work, 8 hours play, 8 hours rest equals the 24 best. Dad has lived by these rules all his life, now he’s 87 and still getting around like a 20 year old!!!
Yep. *Most* adults need seven to eight hours minimum to maintain health. Anything less and cortisol (neurotoxic) begins accreting, and tissues do not have enough time to repair themselves.
Wellllllll usually people drink coffee with lack of sleep. If he drank coffee everyday, then i believe that could be the cause of the unfortunate heart-attack
I feel like his advice is still valid ...but sleep is very important he may be one of those genetic freaks that dont need as much sleep and can still function normally ,its an easy fix just go to bed 2 hours earlier then Casey that way you get 7 ish hours sleep and still get the benefits.
Great video. As someone who was in the military for over 20 years, I can tell you that starting early in the morning is tough if youre not used to it, but over time you get naturally conditioned to it. It works folks. Also, wash off in the shower in cold water!
Well, it might sound funny, but I really feel myself more tired, if I sleep 8 hours. I wake up at 4-5 am, feeling fresh, and if I'm like "I dunno what to do, I should go sleep back", then I'll feel myself not that good.
@@uilmandala8609 Part of that is recovery. Getting less sleep than you need is like lifting weights or doing hill sprints. Your body gets tired and needs to recover. But, it's good at ignoring it as long as you keep pushing. That moment when you sit down (or, in this case, lie down for more than four hours), your body moves into recovery and it does not want you going anywhere. Sleep for 7 to 8 hours a night every night for a month and you will be changed forever.
@@Argonnosi, I was sleeping exactly 7-8 hours and felt badly, until changed my lifestyle and the way I eat. And I'm waking up 4-5 am before alarm now, because I feel myself absolutely recovered. And can't even stay longer in my bed, it's just impossible. :D
sleep is not about how long you sleep its about how effectivly you sleep. while sleeping you are not actualy recovering 100% of the times. som people actualy have a rare condition that makes them recover 100% of the time they sleep so they get away with 3-4hours no problem sleep. abusing sleeping meds can allso effect your bodys way of resting. iv had periods of my life where i could only sleep for 2-2,5hours per night while wakeing upp every 20-30min but still be able to go about my day working out, playing video games and going to work. i allso had this one week where me and my friends did amfetamin and ADHD medicin for 8days straight. no sleep minmal food like i ate maby 1skittles bag of candy during that time.and tons of water and drugs and then i whent to work and worked (you do feel exhausted in your body but you still have energy from the drug to push on) the thing is the human body adapts to what it needs to do
One can only imagine what 2025 standards will be like for the highly motivated people... If you don't wake up an hour before going to sleep! you are losing the game of LIFE!!
You make a good point though, besides the humor. The world does seem to be getting faster and faster and we're all trying to pack more stuff into our lives. I think I heard that a fairly large percentage of people in Japan have been dropping dead from exhaustion, due to over working. Productivity is great, but maybe we're too focused on that and not enough on taking it easy and "smelling the roses" so to speak. I guess I'm trying to say that most of us, or at least myself, should be striving for balance in life.
So many studies show that the proper amount of sleep is even more important to your health than nutrition and exercise. Too much sleep isn’t good for you either but five hours is not enough.
So awesome that I came across this cause I just recently told myself and wife that I’m going to be getting up at 5:30 again. I feel better look better and days just all around better and way more productive. Thanks for the bud, Alexa set alarm for 5:30am! 💪🏽💯🤑
Hi Casey Just saw this video. Struggling with time management right now. Wanted to do this from a long time. Will make changes from tomorrow. My girlfriend says it’s the practice which makes it easier but I believe if you’ve a mindset, it is achievable. Thankyou casey!
I might not be the first to say this, but I absolutely needed this video. I get up at 9am and think I've done well... after doing exactly what Jocko said; turning over and embracing a little more sleep. I do have the 'excuse' that I'm a night shift worker. But that's what that is; an excuse. Now, I see exactly where it goes wrong. My day, every day, starts of on the wrong side of productivity. GET UP. WIN.
Kamron Darkshani at your age you should be getting 9-10 hours sleep it has great benefits for muscles, brain, height, happiness, health, if you work 14 hours a day I’m very confused on how you function, along with fitting school, and since you seem motivated extra chores, maybe toss in a sport or volunteer work to get ready for college and there’s just no way your alive Rn.
I used to be the closing supervisor at work, getting off at 10pm, staying up til 3am. Then I switched to the morning shift, which STARTED at 4am, so my alarm was going off at 3am. I learned to love it. Got promoted and don't have to come in til 7am usually now, but I still wake up early just to have that quiet chill time before going in.
I like this mindset, I really do, but in practice we know that 8 hours of sleep is *essential* to a healthy body and a healthy mind. Waking up at 4:30 means being asleep at 20:30, maintaining a social life or giving time to your family is almost impossible in this time frame. Don't let this mindset fool you guys, sleep is just as important as training or diet.
Same sleep is important for my body recover, I train bjj and wrestling and workout most days. I get injured more easy when I don’t sleep enough. Good concept. Extreme for some I think most just need to move it up some. But each case is situational
I go to bed around 10ish and wake up around 6am without an alarm clock. I do get a couple of hours of productive time and/or gym (I exercise in alternate days) and some reading, before going to work. In the video Casey says he uses 3 alarms, it is a sign his body needs more rest.
New research suggests that lack of sleep allows the brain to develop Alzheimers. Both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher boosted that slept 6 hours a day, then they both suffered from the same brain disease. Also training 3 hours before bedtime increase your core body temperature, that also interferes with the quality of one's sleep. Going off the research, Casey is sadly leaving himself short in later life just to be productive today. Time will tell.
I have never hated myself for having to waking up early. I have always felt really good for the whole day when I do. Even when I was down on my luck, literally a month away from being homeless. My only problem is that I don't have the discipline to do it every single day.
getting 5 hours of sleep (11pm-4am) is proven to damage your brain across the board. Your chances of getting Alzheimer's disease, regressing long and short term memory, and congestive heart failure all go up. Don't believe me? do some true and honest research yourself. I agree that more time in the morning is so helpful, and coffee definitely makes you forget that you are lacking sleep. I wish we all had a few extra hours in the day. But it simply is not healthy. Especially for those with brains still growing. If you are under the age of 25, your brain is most likely still growing. around 8 -9 hours of sleep is needed for those with growing brains, and 6-8 for those brain is not growing. Like I said, do your own research.
A new study has discovered that when people sleep, special lymph channels in the brain called the “glymphatic system” actually open up and drain dangerous neurotoxins from the brain into the cerebral spinal fluid. (1-4) The study suggested it takes about 6-8 hours of sleep to complete the brain drain plumbing process, which is compelling evidence that getting the correct amount of sleep matters. ---- various tumours are more likely to occur for example if those toxins are not released
But he is not sleep deprived, he goes to bed at 11pm and wakes up at 5 that's solid 6hrs of sleep which is perfect for an adult 28+ 🤷🏻♀️ it's just that he goes to bed early
+vinniesmyyth. I can agree with the idea that the early hours are the most productive for some, for others it's the late hours. No matter when you decide to sleep, you should try to get your 8 hours. Casey is getting what now? 5.5 hours between 11 pm and 4:30 am? In the video they try to make it sound like discipline creates more time, and to a certain degree it probably does, but at the end of the day Casey is still sleeping 2.5 hours less than he should, which is proven "HORRENDOUS FOR YOUR HEALTH!" to quote Awesomeness Hippopotamus. The problem is that they're making it sound like it's a positive and healthy thing to skip sleep.
No, 6 hours is NOT enough (read Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker). The thing is - the lack of sleep affects you (and your performance) even though you don't realise it. It's like when you're drunk - you think you're not nearly as drunk as you really are. Get 7-9 hours. And yes, that 1 hour makes a difference.
With all those motivation videos on the internet, it's important to keep in mind that sometimes it's okay to just do less, take time off, have a lazy day,... We are only human
Yeah I agree. People always have the tendency for taking things too far. Some people are lazy and some people work themselves into the ground until they can't anymore. Both aren't healthy.
My grandfather always said: "In the end the only thing I want to be is happy." As long as you are happy it's the right way! Everyone has his own journey.
Couldn't agree more. I think thats why so many are depress in this generation is because we tend to be so hard on ourself. Pushing and being productive all the time and when we slack we tend to punish ourself.
Read the book 'Why we sleep' and you'll never want to sleep less than 7hrs again. Strong links to not sleeping enough and Alzheimer's. The brain needs its recovery time.
Isnt this funny?? I have two sisters who arr doctors. They have the shittiest sleep, social life and diet because of their work and responsibilities but they have to help others
Will Zay that’s 9pm ure taking about going to sleep , which is def not Practical for a family life. Even if ure single and alone 9pm is incredibly early for sleeping , def don’t agree with a 4am wake up
I’m a Pipe Welder here in Florida and am currently on the VA project, I live 80 miles from the jobsite and have to be up around 3am. I’ve been getting up between 3-4 for the past 3 years since I’ve gotten into this trade
I actually wanna know what would be a good sleep routine. I want to wake up early but also want to have enough sleep. I wake up at 7 and sleep at 12 at night, so 7 hours of sleep everyday. Works good enough to keep me motivated though
Casey, I came here to say something else but was taken by the comments here. So what I wanted to say was that it was an amazing way to interview someone and mix it so well with your own personality and content style. but I see that even your fans are amazingly creative, (I am a fan too, but I am not talking about myself. I feel like a novice here on creativity). Just went through a few comments here and I realized these comments are pouring with wit. What an incredible community? Hats off
The SEALS I knew were just a unique breed. Highly intelligent, even intellectual. The ones I knew slept, kinda. It’d be nothing for them to go on a ten mile run before dawn, work, work out again, squeeze in a college course, hit the rack around midnight or one, and start the whole routine all over again.
Now THIS is the old school content that I LOVE. I followed Casey not for all the cool things he does but to see how he works, how he hustles, to get me going!
I find if I start my day with a short (15-20min) jog, I have much more energy throughout the day. For those looking for motivation, try making yourself do this one thing. Don't push yourself too hard (or you won't benefit from the max energy). It works. From there, the rest of the day is easy.
Waking up 4am will not get us anywhere, without knowing why. I believe PURPOSE and PASSION is the source of why we do such things like waking up early.
People who labor all their lives but have no purpose to direct every thought and impulse toward are wasting their time - even when hard at work. ~Marcus Aurelius
I was a seal, but not a Navy one, I slept on the beach woke up at lunchtime and stole people's fish and chips - great life in the service of my stomach.
