You know, I just stumbled upon this video and haven’t seen this performance since the night it aired. I was really into Conan and just loved GBV. They both felt like the voices of a generation. A generation that I was a part of. Shortly afterwards, I checked out Glen Campbells version, of which I didn’t know existed. After listening to both, I went out to have a smoke and started crying. I’ve been through so much since then. We all have. And I realised all of that time that has passed since the night I watched them perform this song on Conan and it really hit me how special this all is. I mean everything. Such a monstrous and captivating life we live. All that time rushing back. I’m still tearing up. Such a special song and certainly GBV’s sweetest. So glad that I was a part of this, speck as I was, next to the glow of the television set like thousands of others when this special night occurred.
I used to DVR Conan back in 2004. I remember seeing this and wondering who the hell 'Guided by Voices was' -- I had never heard of them. Then they started playing, and I thought 'this kinda sucks,' then 30 or 40 seconds in I thought 'this isn't that bad,' then as I watched I thought 'this is pretty good,' then at the end I thought, 'that was great!!!' And here I am in 2012 watching it on youtube.
All due respect to Mr Glen Campbell, but if I want to know what Bob was hearing in his head I’ll listen to the version on ‘Do The Collapse’. It’s perfect!
I know that it was a year ago, but the level of stupid you displayed in your comment about "the backing band" was astronomically fucking high, setting the bar for future stupid comments. The band is GBV. Period. If you don't get, that's OK, but your great loss!
