Ahhhhh "Guiding Light". Started watching just a year earlier than this and i lasted all the way through the cancellation. But there is no comparison, the show was at its best around this time, i would say up to the mid to late 80's. Ahhhhhhhhh John Wesley Shipp swoooon. Had a major crush on him.
I think GL lost its touch after 85/86.. They bounced back qualitywise 88/89 but after 92 that show went downhill and became boring.. Only time i was back at it with excitement was Jonathan/Tammy in like mir 2000‘s and Lizzie and Bill during the final 2 years
Didn't start watching GL until 1985-I now get why Nola is such a fan favorite. I did watch Lisa Brown on ATWT-such a different role-kudos to Lisa Brown.
WOW, Shalamar's "Full of Fire" playing in the background, remember the days when real music played in the soaps? Enjoying this ep thanks for posting, just subscribed!
How wonderful to get to see this episode! The Morgan/Kelly and Diane/Alan/Joe clips had been around before, but not the entire episode. I loved the disco scenes, especially Nola walking in with those sunglasses. I wish they hadn't made her nice so quickly. She's a lot of fun the way she is now. The scenes with Ross and Carrie are superbly paced and acted. I even love the closing credit shot of the Emmy. And bonus soap ads, and Courtney Sherman in an ad! What more can you ask for?
we can thank the success of ''Dallas'' for the oil-rich Spauldings and Lewises on GL, and the oil-rich Buchanans on OLTL..Reva was NEVR one of my faves; and time didn't change that....
Oh we are the middle of Doug Marland's time as head writer and boy was the show hot. Remember, it's doing extremely well ratings-wise against supenova General Hospital. Guiding Light was #3 of all the soaps that season. By the way, timeslot competitor on NBC was Texas starring Beverlee McKinsey and it's a VERRRY distant third in that time slot.
I remember the Ivory commercial with the firefighters of Virginia Beach, VA and I was in kindergarten back then! Before it became WTKR it was WTAR channel 3 a CBS affiliate here in Virginia Beach, VA
who played tim's friend darren on the guiding light; this would be when bacon was still playing the role of tim? tim was accused in the death of a teenaged girl. mike bauer (Don Stewart) helped tim to clear his name. as it turned out darren was responsible for the young girl's demise. his/darren's father was a senator running for re-election. darren had gotten the girl pregnant. i don't recall the details, but the girl died. darren made it look like tim did it. he felt the scandal would ruin his dad's political career. this was in the summer of '81.
The Jennifer Cook version not too much later on is more spot on for the age difference, which in real life was 10 years difference. Robert Newman then played opposite her with a 6 year difference.
That commercial at 13:48 stars Courtney Simon, wife of Peter Simon who was Ed Bauer on here and the older little boy is the future child star of As The World Turns Paul he's also in Cujo, he's on Who's The Boss too. Unfortunately, he's now sick with HIV. And Lisa Brown married the guy that played Floyd Parker, they had two children together. But they divorced. Morgan was too damn young for Kelly. My God! the girl's only eighteen years old here and he's at least thirty. WAY too young to be drinking alcohol!!!!!! She could have easily played a fifteen year old child with that baby face, there are two MORE people I don't recognize at 21:15.And sorry older fans, but Ron Raines was my favorite Alan Spaulding. There went the sound for about fifteen seconds. There is no such thing as High Point coffee anymore. MMMM Safeguard! I used that soap for years, then I began itching from it and had to begin using Dove.
@@der22672 Lynn Michaels, yes she did..also remember her returning, briefly to SFT as Kathy, and during the latter days of AW as a prosecuting attorney.......
Crystal Hogan I stopped in 1986, when Reva drove off the bridge in Key West. 86-87 was the year that GL jumped the shark, IMHO. So I switched over to ATWT-another show that Doug Marland revitalized in a similar. brilliant fashion.
What's funny about your comment is that, around this time Kirsten Vigard would be replace by another actress in a few more episodes from this one. I think her name was Jennifer Cook? Who replaced her. I actually thought the new Morgan had much better chemistry with this actor. But the powers that be, will break up Kelly & Morgan in the summer of 1982, get rid of the Morgan character for good by the end of that year, to focus more on making Quintin & Nola the "supercouple" for awhile on GL.
I remember Hillary, but who is the man? And Amy Steel, what was her screen name? And there's another unknown man. That picture on Nola's dresser looks like Ronald Reagan, and was that Nancy? And I was two days from turning eighteen. There's Kristen Vigard I saw a movie on Showtime a while back, she was supposed to be the first Annie on Broadway, she was actually at a dress rehersal when her heart was broken and she was told, "We have to let you go." There poor Kristen was, in the movie thirty years later tearing up at the memories. And there's Ross Marler and Scary Carrie
same here!:)! I was a Toddler:)! Literally. At six years old:) Roger Thorpe/Michael Zaslow:) was my hero!:)! The way he was treated in later years by GL is something I'll never excuse.
Wasn't there a Beth character on this show later on who also had a relationship with Kelly and another character that was blond and a blond female character?
+karly DP Yes that was Beth Raines, played at first by Judi Evans and Mindy Lewis, played by Kristen Tesreau. Mindy came to town with her father Billy and fell head over heels in love with Phillip Spaulding, played by Grant Alexander, then he met Beth at the hospital after Mindy was thrown by a horse, she and Beth shared the same hospital room, Rick Bauer, played by Michael O Leary and Phillip fell in love with the pretty and shy Beth Raines, they all went to the prom and Beth and Phillip won the prom king and queen. They called themselves The Four Musckateers. That was my favorite time on Guiding Light for a long time. I was just their ages, which was eighteen at the time. Judi left the role and was replaced by Beth Raines. Beth and Phillip married and they had a daughter named Lizzie and a son named James. On the very last episode, after many struggles, they remarried as did Rick and Mindy. Mindy was played by four different actresses, but Kristen was my favorite one. She came back at the end too.
It was my VERY favorite period. I started watching GL in June 1983 where Mindy's shenanigans caused Phillip to meet claiming she needed to be in the hospital after Vanessa's horse hurt her somehow. Mindy caused both Rick and especially Phillip to take BIG notice of Beth even though the three of them went to high school together. They were big men on campus and Beth was extremely shy and very much under the radar--until she ended up in the same hospital room as Mindy. Mindy lost Phillip big time after Phillip found out that all of Springfield knew he was really Justin Marler's son. The only one who didn't know was Beth. Phillip left town for a brief period and then dumped Mindy upon his return. Phillip was exclusively with Beth until Bradley raped Beth and out of total shame Beth claimed she could no longer be with Phillip . Mindy was waiting in the wings to reclaim Phillip by taking advantage of his grief.....and became pregnant. Eventually Phillip and Beth ran away to NYC with Bradley on their heels. When Beth finally told Phillip what happened to her, his first reaction was so overwrought with guilt for not protecting her that he left. Phillip returned within an hour or so and found Beth no longer there. He feared Beth had left but she also returned within the same day. Phillip held her and promised to protect her entirely from that moment on. But, don't forget, Mindy had become pregnant and Phillip & Beth's relationship fell apart.
