The last few years when GL was still great. After the 80’s GL sucked other then the return of Holly and Roger and the huge Lewis fiasco with the reveal of Kyle not being a Lewis and Sally (played by the beautiful Patricia Barry)being both Billy and Kyle’s mother. So heartbreaking that Chris actually died of AIDS broke my heart. I was never a huge Reva fan but GL had so many great characters like Vanessa and Henry, Ross Marler and Justin and Jackie. Alexandra carried that series in the mid to late eighties not Reva and supporting characters like India, Claire Ramsey and Fletcher and for me the incredible Sonni and Will story played by the still working actress Michelle Forbes. Amanda Spaulding was fantastic and Diane Ballard was one of soaps greatest villains.
Ron Raines was great but I loved Chris Bernau as Alan. Him and Mike Zaslow were the absolute best in daytime. It really pisses me off that they had to break up Alan and Hope. Its not like he ever found anyone that truely loved him again like that.
Yes, I told UK Soap Fans about Chris Bernau dying of AIDS and what they did to Michael Zaslow with his ALS, and they were shocked. Sadly enough Daniel Pilon (Alan #2) also died not too long ago. I think that Alan & Hope not having their Mothers affected them more than they realized that.
@@jabjab4434 While that is technically correct the person only gets those illnesses to the degree to kill them because of Aids and what it did to their immune system so saying both things is true.
the tape is in great shape, too...others from 1984 are in bad quality. i like seeing Chris Bernau as well...which makes me wonder if the uploader has the episode where Alan's being shot at in the San Rios jungle. From the show's time-line/history, it indicates that Alan fled Springfield in early 1984 and went to San Rios and disappeared in the jungle and everyone in Springfield assumed he was dead.
In retrospect WHAT foreshadowing!!!!! "Your son may stand there not able to look you in the eye...not liking who you are," etc..... Flashforward to James. Also the power comment foreshadowing Phil's dark side taking over Spaulding and losing Chelsea. The theme of doing what was best versus being truthful.GREAT historical core scene. SOOOO love CB's Alan. SOOOO loved the writing.
Yes. In The UK when The Slaters debuted in the early 2000's on Eastenders they bought alot of excitment to the show. They "Arrived" on the day of a Funeral and it was discovered that two of the Women Maureen aka Big Mo, had a past with a resident. The Tates arrived in 1989 on Emmerdale and although the last one Zoe left in 2005, her former Stepmother Kim came back for a hot minute. Alan gave Phillip some great advice but he didn't practice what he preached.
The Spauldings were introduced to help expand the canvas when the show grew from a half-hour to an hour. Agree, they brought great story through the years.
@@kelvinblack7567 In The UK there was an Actress named Anita Dobson who played Angie Watts on Eastenders 1985-1986. Also she's married to Brian May of Queen.
You know what's so poignant. Ron Raines (Alan Spaulding #3) said the same thing to Phillip when he and James went on the Camping Trip. "You Chose To Be Alone". That's so true. His wives loved him but he was so hard to love. I think that Hope & Elizabeth paid the highest price for his "emotional issues". Why was he going away?
So, what was the reason Alan was leaving the show? While I was down and out, I watched the saga of Beth, Phillip, Rick & Mindy. It would be nice to watch these all over again.
Doug Koehler I wonder why Chris Bernau left in 1984 and returned 2 years later. I hope he was sick the cause of him leaving in 1984. When he came back in ‘86 he was beyond ruthless.
Adam B. Smith Not sickness. I think he was taking his shot at the big time. I have some of his stuff and there is a sheet of photos taken in Beverly Hills in 1985
@@lorimendoza4721 Yes, a lot of US Soap Actors leave their Role hoping to hit the Big Time and they come back. However when a UK Soap Actor comes back like Kat/Alfie on EastEnders or Bianca/Ricky as well The Fans are beyond excited. Phillip was so scarred by what happened to him he didn't realize that out of his Four Children James paid the highest price. Being conceived to save Lizzie, then thinking that Daddy is dead, then having Granddad ship him off to Boarding School, then finding out his Father is alive, then in his own way spoiling him, by rescuing him with The Ponzi Scheme by getting a replacement to do his Community Service.
1984 may well have been GL’s last truly great year. By 85/86, it was showing signs of weakening. Maybe 1985 sneaks in there. They lost me for good when Revs drove off the bridge in Key West, which I think was 86 or 87. I jumped ship to watch Marland work his magic-with much of the same cast he worked with on GL-from 1986 to the mid-90s.
