MZ "This sounds corny, but we really have grown up together"! Yes, and we have grown up with the both of you! Thank you for all those years MZ and MG! I started watching in the late 70's off and on!
TPTB at Guiding Light made a terrible mistake when they stopped featuring characters like Roger, Holly, the Bauers, and the Spauldings and turned it into The Reva Show. The last few years were just awful. A sad ending to what was a great soap.
I agree with everything you said. I like Kim Zimmer depending on what they give her storyline wise. GL drifted way off course with everything that was San Cristobal (outside of Olivia and Jonathan eventually), Cyrus, Rafe, Natalia, Rafe, The Santoses, Drew Jacobs, Dahlia Creed, Tori Grainger, and a few no-good recasts for important roles.
Roger Thorpe one of the best bad guys ever on a soap. I'd love to see someone create videos of every time he has came back from the dead, that would be very interesting, the actor that played Roger Thorpe did a very good job.
The shots heard all over Springfield: first Phillip at the altar, then Roger in midair, with Alan Spaulding as trigger man both times. AWESOME stuff! Thanks for posting!
Gosh Daniel Pilon played Alan to the extreme evil. I don't even think Chris Bernau would try and blow up the town in a church. Priceless zoom in Ed when it was revealed it was Roger under the mask.
Yes, but people still had a hard time with him replacing the late Chris Bernau. God, so many people are gone from this show. Michael Zaslow, William Roerick amongst others.
laminage Chris Bernau owned the role of Alan Spaulding. It's like how Eric Breaden is to Victor Newman is how Chris Bernau was to Alan. Ron Raines was great too at the role but I wish he was more like Chris Bernau 1977-84. Not too crazy for when he returned in 1986, probably more of the direction of the show.
Yes you are so right on that. I didn't watch Guiding Light until around 1994 when Matt & Vanessa first met. I'll say one thing, this show had a lot of "Closeted" Actors. Chris Bernau, Geraldine Court, Maureen Garrett. I loved Chris's Voice. He could have been an announcer. Can you imagine how Surreal it must have been for Michael Zaslow to work with All Three Alans, Two Alexes, Three Alan Michaels.
I also forgot Two Ed Bauers. Mart Hulswit and Peter Simon not to mention the Four Blakes. Michael Zaslow's Comeback was alot more successful than when Leslie Grantham reprised his Role as "Dirty Den" Watts on The UK Soap Opera Eastenders. He could give Roger Thorpe a run for their money or even Larry Lamb who played Archie Mitchell as well.
Just simply excellent!!! I watched the complete parts. I been a Lighter for years, I was 17-18 during the rape\trial\shooting, that was amazing chemistry and when all returned (Thorpes) GL was right on target bringing him back on canvas. It got cooking when Sherry came aboard as Blake, she created a bitchy, proving she's Roger's daughter. I remember and the people hated DP as Alan, GL got feedback (I wrote in) but had to finish the storyline & was gone until Ron.
What made this scene so powerful and surreal was that it was the first time Peter Simon was working with Michael Zaslow. They also worked on Search For Tomorrow where Michael played Dr. Dan Hart while Peter played Scott Phillips but I don't think that they did scenes together.
In 1972 Andrew Burt debuted as Jack Sugden on the New UK Soap Opera Emmerdale Farm now known as Emmerdale that he played until 1976. In 1980 a "New" Jack debuted named Clive Hornby that played the Role until his death from Cancer in 2008. Only die hard Soap Fans know that he was Jack #2, the same way Melody Thomas Scott is Nikki Newman #2 on The Young & The Restless or the way Victoria Wyndham was Rachel #3 on Another World.
I'm really curious in the late 80s part, having a masked man running around doesn't really to fly these days on operas which is a shame. I just love how crazy that'd be.
