It seems a lot of people sort of miss the point with Rytlock and his arc in IBS and the requiem story. People mostly say “oh but he doesn’t act like a charr” as if that isn’t the point. At launch he was the brutal blood legion Tribune most people know him as, but because he went globe trotting with the commander he sort of mellowed out, became more sympathetic. The requiem story was sort of the final part where he almost fully stopped acting like a charr, when he realized why The Commander and Caithe were so upset over the death of Aurene, and reflected on his life wishing he’d done it different. That’s why in IBS he’s more uncomfortable back home, he feels like and outsider trying to connect with his “family” which just isn’t possible, leading to him having to come to terms with that and make the hard choice in the end, to kill Ryland. It’s personally my favorite arc of any of the characters in the game.
@PinkPiratePickle
@PinkPiratePickle 3 года назад
I am glad that you see it this way and explained it beatifully , I just always say he became a domesticated cat . some just cant escape the fantasty stereotype . His character had a lot of conflict with his own people and its been demonstrated a lot in the story. One example was that he declined a higher position amongst the charr.
@Cheeryjokey
@Cheeryjokey 3 года назад
Agree - I never liked the sentiment that the Charr had to be bloodthirsty creatures hellbent on war - the Olmakhan proved that and I didn't mind if Rytlock shifted. I would be annoyed if entire legion Charr society changed in that direction and appreciate that Crecia was more of that style of Charr mother where Rytlock softened somewhat. I basically see DE Rytlock as a different character to DW Rytlock now, but I don't think that's a bad thing and I agree with your comment.
@TheIronDrapery
@TheIronDrapery 3 года назад
Yes! I've said it before, them expanding on the Charr by making them more compassionate, like any other sentient being would have to be to build a society in the first place, is not a retcon. The fascist hierachical structure that takes away the young Charr from their parents and endoctrinates them to become dedicated to war and the strength/supremacy of the Charr race is not the natural state of being for any society, and A-net introducing the Olmakhan to reflect this was a great move. We like out villains, gray, not black and white, right? Adding this extra depth to Rytlock, and as extention the entire Charr race, was one of the best things A-net has done, world building wise.
@wafflingmean4477
@wafflingmean4477 3 года назад
I wish they put a little more of this in the game though, not just the Requiem story. I read it, so understood Rytlock's new way of thinking. But I feel like most players didn't quite understand why Rytlock was so different by the time he met Ryland. I loved how they outlined the difference clearly though, when Bangar straight up said "Charr don't have sons, everyone knows that."

The weird sense of mismatched scale was actually what saved HoT's story for me from all the other little disappointments of the cuts. I liked the disorienting feeling of being on a collision with Mordremoth and having no idea how you'll actually overcome him until the last second. It felt very intimate, HoT's maps were really good at making you feel small and insignificant, and the story kind of played on that. I do wish there was just... more, though. I had just come to HoT from FFXIV and it's first expansion and found myself wishing GW2 was more willing to have story beats where you just read unvoiced text purely for exposition and pacing.
@MissGenkiArt
@MissGenkiArt 3 года назад
I'm in the minority of my friends but the HoT maps are some of my favorite to this day. You're spot on with how they really do make you feel small and insignificant. You can get lost in the jungle, especially in the Tangled Depths. Verdant Brink's endless war with so many different small stories going on at the same time is one of the most immersive maps there is. It really has the scope of war with finding survivors from the crash, rebuilding from next to nothing, distrust among the pact, and surviving the night. I really wish my friends had the same appreciation for the atmosphere and storytelling in those maps. But they're generally just too annoyed by the mere act of traversing them, haha.

One of my personal pet peeves with the recent story is how they handled Almorra's death. One of the most interesting characters in the game to me because of her direct connection to one of the elder dragons, that could've died fulfilling her vow of avenging her warband and saving the day in one last hurrah is instead killed off camera after her narrative importance is exhausted. And all that to be replaced now by a boring norn...

who only interact twice with the main character, like, who the fuck are you?
@choryllis6646
@choryllis6646 3 года назад
Not only that, but she is one of the few Charr we interact with regularly who doesn't fully hate humans and isn't 100% bloodthirsty and war-mongering. Almorra, Rytlock, and Tybalt are 3 standout Charr because of their compassion for the world and their willingness to put their grievances with other groups behind them for the safety of them all (you can make the argument about all of the Charr in the orders, but none of them were as developed as these 3). Almorra openly admitted that she was upset about her son being killed, but she had come to terms with it long before because it would be for the good of the world if Charr and humans got over their own egos. Rytlock was the same, and his "hatred" of humans in the Personal Story was basically just being upset that Logan left the fight early. And then there's Tybalt from the Order of Whispers who very heavily respected the humans he served with (most likely because they didn't treat him as badly as the other Charr legions did after he lost his warband). Tybalt died in 2012, yet they still bring his death up as a very traumatic experience for the player, such as during the fight with Mordremoth and when the player is in the Domain of the Lost. Almorra? You tell Jhavi every few releases, "She'd be proud of you." Also, Jhavi should've been given a lot more character for how big of a role her ancestor's story was when dealing with Jormag. Her biggest role in all of Icebrood was the fight against Drakkar and then she's basically a background character the rest of the story.
@Kasaaz

it's because your expected to play every race and every faction to get the full story which pissed me off to no end. it's fine to have a personal story but there should be a cohesion of main story plots. Like the fact that fort trinity was a combination of sylvari char and asura tech wasn't brought up in the human story, you just get there and like "hey check out our awesome base we built overnight" or how about the fact that there aren't chat icons over characters with dialog, so you have to mouse over every single person just to hear "nice weather" from someone.

It's really disheartening to come in as a newer player and see vets holding these kind of opinions especially when, through my eyes, I see so much this game does well. It's quality of life with it's wiki integration and customizability are really amazing, it has a really diverse cast with great representation that so many other games either miss the mark on or lack completely (Like disabled and LGBT characters who just /are/ instead of having it be their whole personality), the world feels really alive with so much of the content being voiced and offering a lot of interaction, and having a lot of really unique things about it's gameplay and events that make for some amazing moments that I find myself wanting to replay and experience with people (like the wonderfully chaotic metal concert in grothmar). As a hardcore player, I think it is easy to get jaded over time when you look exclusively at the faults of something, but I think that there are a lot of positives to really help to balance out the negatives you list here (a lot of which seem to be things they've at least attempted to learn from). I also want to note that, as a consumer, I'd much rather have a company try to do something innovative and unique and fail rather than having them turn out the same shit on the same schedule. Coming from being a hardcore player of FFXIV, having everything be the same and predictable 100% of the time feels boring and you kind of find yourself wondering why you spend so much time gear grinding to stay relevant and be able to play when you don't want to anymore- at least GW offers the ability to step away for a little bit and then drop in to pick back up when you need a mental break, life happens, or something else has caught your interest.

My sentiments on the “top” worst moment in the development of GW2 are very close to WP’s. The worst mistake, and by far, was indeed right after the game launch, when it became apparent that they didn’t have a clear idea of the post launch content and they hadn’t a post launch production pipeline ready. They even admitted several years later that for quite some time they just tried several things to see what was sticking, which is insane in my mind. This was really GW2’s original sin. When the game launched it was insanely popular, WoW had a weak expansion launch and tons of content creators and outlets were closely following GW2. Unfortunately, they were quite unprepared to keep people engaged after the first months. I have thought many times where GW2 would be now if it launched with a clear and solid post launch roadmap, Ascended gear, quality 5-men and 10-men instanced content like Fractals and Raids/Strikes, a consistent series of Living Story episodes planned and the clear notion that Expansions will be a thing. It took quite some time for them to figure out this (relatively obvious) stuff. But in the meantime they had lost lots of people and the game had earned this infamous label of being the MMO with no endgame and where “there’s nothing to do”. To this day, I believe they could have become a genuine behemoth of a game, because its fundamentals are indeed outstanding. With more revenue and visibility in the long run, maybe the layoff disaster would have been avoided and the game would be in a quite different position today...

I think one of the worst mistakes was using the same engine from GW1. This game runs like complete ass on new and powerful hardware. It was a massive oversight given how much of a departure GW2 was to GW1 and also how long GW1 lasted. There is still quite a lot of people that still play GW1. But all we got is the same engine on steroids that struggles. This game would have ran a lot better if they built it on an engine that supported DX11 or DX12.

That release ended with the public firing of Jessica Price and one other dev, a massive amount of negative press from the developers berating the community, the complete shunting of Gandara as a location, a nearly empty and soulessly grindy map, all with the sentiment that "We are the developers and this is what you get".

No the live action trailer was ANet letting their artists have a bit too much creative freedom. The whole thing is very much an arthouse piece, lots of bizarre elements combined in ways that make sense abstractly but are not easy to digest by the mass audience. I think what happened was people loved ANet's use of their concept art and leveraging the talent of their artists so for the launch trailer they let some of them take the helm, and surprise surprise a bunch of art school grads make an arthouse piece that is bizarre and not well received in mainstream media.

So... about just a couple of months before GW2 released, another MMO called "The Secret World" came out, with massive, open-world PvE, WvWvW 3-way faction battles, PvP, etc, & it had an animated trailer very similar to the GW2 live-action trailer. The Secret World actually seemed really promising on release, & during GW2 beta there I saw a lot of people debating which game would be better in the end. GW2 had far better WvW & PvP than The Secret World, & TSW released with monthly sub, iirc, & GW2 was just a bigger overall game. I don't know that TSW release had anything to do with GW2 putting out that weird trailer, I just remember thinking how oddly similar it was to some of the TSW marketing at the time. Honestly, there may just be no explaining that trailer; hopefully we'll see a bunch of former Abet employees being grilled about it on a Netflix documentary in 20 years or something.

For me the absolute worst was their decision to basically ignore WvW from launch, the single gamemode with undeniable potential and IMO one of the major selling points for the game pre-launch. Launch WvW was still some of the most fun I ever had in GW2 and that was a time where mechanically, WvW was a shoddy mess with graphical glitches, culling, the fact you couldn't use your skills in Stonemist fights at weekly reset because the servers couldn't handle it - despite all that, the gamemode was just so much fun because GW2 had(and still has) an incredible combat system. It baffles me to this day that ArenaNet went with focusing GW2 to be a solo-player story game where practically all of the potential of the combat system is lost(save for interesting mechanics in raids or fractals, which are few and far between). The focus absolutely should have been on open world PvP and sPvP, where those mechanics could really shine.

I played this game at launch and remember vividly the release of Flame and Frost. A bunch of my friends and I were in several different teamspeaks and ventrilo servers eagerly waiting for the patch to drop. An entire mob of players entered Wayfarer Foothills and followed a line all the way down the map, repairing signs. After awhile it got really, really quiet in every chat room and especially in map chat, there was this communal feeling like... “Is this it? There has to be something more to this, right?” But after about an hour or two of wandering around trying to find the content we felt were promised I gradually saw everyone’s numbers dwindle and log off. Or go do something else. It was the saddest thing I ever remember in my 8 years of playing this game.

It seems like GW2s issues stem from constantly shifting gears with the direction of the game (Living world, expansions, etc) and not having a plan. Before GW2 released, I remember them saying as soon as the game launched, half the team would focus on the next expansion, and there would be an expansion every 2 years. They should have just stuck with that instead of playing around with Living World.

As a norn fan, from the moment when tooth is cracked in season 3, i always waited for a content that me as a norn commander, go to north to reclaim lost homeland. But soon after we get to see jormag put into sleep. So i made peace with the idea of not going there since the threat did not disappeared entirely. When IBS came and we went to north, i was super excited for possibility of finding our homeland. (I can relate the pain of yours about getting disapppointed as a primordus fan) However all i get was a disappointment as IBS got butchered for a coming expansion which we told we wouldnt need it because IBS supposed to be that good and and replace expansions. Leaving my disappointment on my favorite topics getting ignored, arenanet had way too broad scope and try to deliver many stuff but it was highly under equipped to run such a big ambitions. After a certain point even having 5 different race and different story lines were too big to handle for them. So focusing on smaller subject like having only one or two race and not focusing various big story arcs that affect the course of whole world would be way healtier for arenanet. At this point Especially after loosing so much blood. I dont think neither they have capibility to tell captivating stories about the course of whole world, nor will to provide consistent story telling. I really do support your ideas on us, players are not gonna believe or getting invested into new story arcs. And that is devastating. I spent so much time in this universe and i love tyria. Rather than having elders dragons as a mighty nemesis that making us have to put everyting aside and unite to save tyria, i really enjoy little stories like chars having a civil war, norn finally have chance to reclaim, rising tension between char-human, having a lich king tyrant, sylvari as a race have a connection to elder dragon so getting into position that there is different opinion about salvation and getting racial hatred towards them. At this point race seems like only a cosmetic option where you only get couple fun diolougue based on your race, however at the end you supposed to be a good commander and fight against the baddies. Im sorry, this long comment lost direction many times. Im just glad you as a huge geek about this universe, mention some similar problems. I always felt getting disconnected from my charecter and it always went worse. Wish we only had only one option, play as a human but the decisions we made had a real consequences. All other races should have remain as non playable races.

I loved one path ends but the character I experienced it on was a human blessed by Balthazar, with the unknown parents background, and a member of the order of whispers. Many storylines from my personal story were concluded or expanded upon in season 3 so I understand the criticism of it because I can't even imagine how awkward it might be to play as a different race.

Honestly, what's even left that's still interesting about the GW universe after EoD wraps up? The worldbuilding from GW1 is what originally captivated me and made the GW universe interesting. However, it's like they see the GW1 worldbuilding more as a burden than as something to nurture and cultivate. Whether it be the gods, the dragons, or general GW1 mysteries, they seem so concerned with wrapping things up to go to something new that they're willingly butchering (or writing out of the picture) chunks of the GW1 worldbuilding and leaving behind a mess of half-baked plans and story threads that'll never be brought to fruition. EoD? They'll likely do the same to Cantha that they've been doing from the start. The treatment of Jormag and Primordus may not be the worst thing they've done, but they were certainly bad enough to undo any good faith they earned from PoF or LS4. This was their chance to prove that they could deliver consistent quality across multiple LS/expansion cycles and frankly they blew it. Post-layoff ANet? This is apparently what they're capable of delivering, art without substance. Outside of reimagining locations from GW1, they've struggled to make good use of the existing worldbuilding and expand upon it in competent and meaningful ways. I seriously doubt they'll be able to do any new worldbuilding post-EoD justice, especially once they no longer have any lines to trace or worldbuilding left to butcher from GW1.

Prior to being disappointed by the reveal that all the commotion was just some dredge on fire, I really dug the atmosphere built during the patch that added the broken signs. Such a great video as always, Potatoes. Thanks for always putting your heart and soul into your content, it's hard to find a RU-vidr with more heart and passion for a game than with you and the Guild Wars franchise. I've played Guild Wars 1 since release, and dropped off Guild Wars 2 in 2014 right before the Heart of Thorns release. It was a really bumpy ride which led up to my heartbreaking departure from Guild Wars 2, and I've listed a few below which you didn't include in your top 17. -Southsun Cove, one of the first huge new maps to be released in the game, was a conceptual and technical disaster upon release. While visually designed very well, the amount of mobs, players, particle effects, and everything else included with the corresponding event made playing it a nightmare. Not to mention, after the map's release event ended, Southsun Cove completely faded into the background as a seemingly wasted effort of dev time. -Super Adventure Box Season 2. After proving to be a MASSIVE hit with the playerbase, it was a huge stab in the back when it came back around the following year with artificially harder difficulty, near-impossible insta-death jumps, and a brand new monetized Continue system to seemingly be pushed as a solution to the newly added difficulty. It really emphasized the fact that Nexon was on the monetization team for Guild Wars 2, and was one of the more player-hostile Gem Store schemes early on in the game's lifespan. -You touched on it briefly, but the Heart of Thorns prerelease disaster was my final nail in the coffin. Yes, I'll go ahead and admit I thought it was sleazy to add a new playable class without providing an extra character slot initially, especially based on what the precedent was set with Guild Wars 1, but that wasn't the meat of the issue. Like you mentioned, the hand-wavy explanation of "Core is free, HoT is $50, and no discounts for current players" was the straw the broke the camel's back. It seemed like such blatant disregard for the hemorrhaging playerbase at the time in many ways, and I still look back on that situation and shake my head in severe disappointment.

I have played Guild Wars 2 since headstart. My biggest issue is that Guild Wars 2 does not feel like it is the same world as Guild Wars. I love that you've catalogued and laid out the history of the game so well here. It puts its failures into perspective, and reminded me of many things I've forgotten over the years. It's incredible how many problems can be summed up as the developers being too ambitious and not following through. As one of the few pvpers still invested in the game, it especially hurts to think of all the missed opportunities for competitive play. I wonder what would have happened if they invested in the pvp infrastructure at launch, or at least pitched the pvp as a beta of sorts, delaying the hype until they were ready to launch a decent leaderboard system. As a fan, it feels like there were moments of creative genius in the development of the game, particularly with the combat system. The weapon swap mechanic, dodging, movement abilities, jumping puzzles in conquest maps, and elegantly designed skills all combine to make incredibly compelling pvp combat. Still, pvp floundered because it lacked the tools for competitive play, and by the time they came, the last gasp of esports hype was undone by shoddy balance. Today we have an even better infrastructure, but the gamemode is hamstrung by a low population - the result of past mistakes and neglect. I think End of Dragons has the potential for a pvp revival, not as an esport that will attract outside attention, but as a game mode with a healthy devoted following. There are benefits to a scene that has dropped all pretention of "making it big," so I wouldn't say the outlook is all bad. I really do hope pvp continues to get love though. I've been happy with Cal Cohen (cmc)'s influence, and I think the mode will do well as long as it receives frequent balance updates.

My memory is fuzzy, but I believe they quit because "there's no endgame" and "it's a game for casuals"... (there was also some drama with world vs world too, with people jumping onto high population worlds...) I tried to convince them to come back for Heart of Thorns / Path of Fire, but no luck there. Can't blame them for not wanting to invest in game that let them down.

No waffling, conflicting visions, changing plans, complete overhauls of what format of content gets delivered when, etc. They have a clear, unambiguous picture of what their game is, what they want to produce, and the range of things they're willing to experiment with; they don't always hit the mark (e.g., Eureka), but each misstep gets a second look before long. And they update like clockwork. I think GW2 hit a similarly confident stride around S3-PoF-S4; a bit wonkier, perhaps, but those episodes contain some of the game's best moments, both gameplay- and story-wise. It's the _most presentable_ the game had been over the course of its lifespan. I think the problem lies in the fact that GW2 was never intended to be a "bimonthly bit of story + RPG-lite map exploration"-kind of game - its bones are too competitive, the gap between skill floor and ceiling is too wide to serve as a workable design space (especially without good tutorials), and every release before this era is all over the place, making onboarding difficult. This narrowed the audience down to a very specific intersection of interests: 1) lore-nerds that somehow got roped into a (marketed as) PvP-focused game, and then stuck around despite a studio that didn't seem overly concerned about respecting their setting's believability and consistency; 2) people invested in the plot or characters, which is quite a feat given how uneven (or flat-out not in the game) some chapters of the story are; 3) people who enjoy GW2's intricate RPG buildcraft and combat mechanics, despite the devs having to ignore all of them when designing their casual story patches. To not be the perfect center of this Venn diagram is to experience even GW2's "heyday" of stable releases as a cavalcade of frustrations.

One good thing about FFXIV's team is that they actively understand when they CAN do something and when they can't. Something Naoki Yoshida constantly says is that his teams has a ton of ideas that they can do, but since they know they don't have the time or budget, they simply swallow their pride and don't do it.

Have we played the same game?? I've been playing FFXIV since its release and would consider myself a massive fan, and am usually really forgiving of the team because they're working with an absolute dogshit budget thanks to higher ups - but even I think you're being *FAR* too generous. FFXIV content loops involve getting a SINGLE dungeon, a SINGLE trial, a bite-sized amount of story, with an alliance raid and a savage raid tier every other patch. The same old song and dance every 3-4 months; their events are short and uninvolved as well. There's no world to explore, nothing to really interact with. The dungeons are beautiful, but are all the exact same hallway that anyone can get through with a single hand. Raids and trials can be fun, but rarely have any creativity in terms of mechanics. Classes have lost all identity and are now homogenous in the name of easier balancing. There are no situational abilities, no CC to work with - everything always boils down to doing the exact same skill rotations over and over with nothing to keep tab of in between. You mention their experimenting and talk about Eureka, but don't mention how they tried that same idea twice and failed both times - how they've changed combat and have reworked classes several times, have removed entire mechanics and stats from tanks, have "experimented" with cross skills and role skills only to end up deciding to give everyone the exact same bland abilities because it's easier; I could write an entire essay on how badly they've screwed healers up. The XIV community has been raging at the dev team about the awful state of healers for THREE EXPANSIONS and they've somehow only managed to make it worse everytime they try to play with it. Important to note as well - it was only a few years ago that we were getting 2-3 dungeons a patch, 2 trials, new cosmetics and character customization options per patch. Events are rarely anything other than talking to 2 npcs, doing a FATE, and reaping your reward of one whole small furniture for your house (FFXIV housing is a whole other monster of a topic by itself). They don't even do the latter anymore - they sprinkle a hair option here and there at best and it's usually some derivative of the same short hair style. FFXIV has long had an issue of being all flash, and very little substance. It's great for players who want a static loot treadmill that never changes, but is otherwise extremely finite and extremely repetitive. Beautiful story, music, and world - but very little in it to keep you interested for over an hour per patch. Expansions bring a lot in, but face the same issues.

@@PaintySkies I'm not all that happy with XIV as a game either; it's just an incomparably better managed project. The game has next to no mechanics on the player's side - you just do your Job, literally, and can't do all that poorly or carry all that hard - but the devs make the best of that limitation. It allows them to design intricate enemy mechanics, with lots of confidence in what the players will be capable of handling. GW2's mad-scientist build diversity guarantees that ANet will never be able to get even close to that kind of encounter design without tossing out the bottom 99% of their playerbase. All in all, the kind of frustration the XIV community has for the devs' efforts to design new content pales in comparison to how the GW2 community reacts with revulsion to any new direction ANet decides to take. Which makes sense - GW2 is torn between so many conflicting design philosophies that nothing will ever please the frankensteinian aggregate that is its playerbase. XIV has no aspirations of being a reinvention of the wheel - it's a very precise product which telegraphs with certainty what you can expect from it, and delivers on it. It's never been a particularly transcendent RPG experience, but I've never felt cheated or strung along by it, and this clarity let me focus on what I enjoyed best in it - the narrative.

@@ikaemos "It's bones are too competitive" - I love that line, and the rest of what you've written here. I can't help but wonder where GW2 would be if it had the kind of humble and stable leadership Yoshida blessed FFXIV with.

I think something arguably important is also the fact that we heard nothing about Mike Z leaving back in November of 2019, still haven't heard anything to this day and there is still an open posting for a Game Director on ArenaNet's careers page. I'd argue thats a low point, and continues to be one.

Remember when Anet released the Tier 3 human cultural armor with added particle effects on the gemstore, then caved to outcry and changed it to the hideous Flame Feather Armor? Such a shame, the possibilities of being able to use any cultural armor regardless of race (its no secret that the armors were designed on a human model and then shrunk/stretched to fit the other races) would have led to so many more interesting looks. Or what about when there was an outcry about Anet only releasing new armor skins on the gem store, and so Anet went in the complete opposite direction and began to only release them as ingame rewards... at a glacial pace. This in turn led to the creation of the Outfit system, which many players loathe. Thats always been the flaw with Anet when it comes to GW2. They always pivot between extremes and almost never settle somewhere in the middle. A profession too powerful? Gut it! A material too cheap? Cut the generation of said material massively and then increase the demand for said material several fold (looking at you, Mystic Coins).

My faith in Arena Net has been totally destroyed over the last few years. I was a guy that would spend a few hours each evening unwinding while playing and trying to enjoy the game. Sadly, this last round of kill ten moles then kill another ten moles, over and over again has broke me of even caring about doing dailies.

To be honest the only reason I don't play GW2 anymore is because the people I used to do story with moved the day we played to one where I was working. I didn't find the motivation to do the story on my own.
