Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 Character Overview - Who to Pick? 

i forgot to do one on jacko lmao to summarize jacko for anyone wanting a look into the character: her gameplan is set up huts, let minions control neutral or save you from neutral interactions (e.g. the air minion is powerful vs general air movement) and just make it harder for the opponent to play with things like aegis shield. shes pretty much considered a huge knowledge check character due to how massively different her game is vs someone who actively gives up situations to kill huts vs if they only try to combo her and ignore killing the huts. whats kinda interesting about her is that her footsies buttons are actually kind of underrated and she can fight some characters in neutral solo pretty OK, but her reward is actively low without minions. with minions, though, she becomes a lot stronger with way more combo tools and a lot of burst safe routes. the goal is to get all her minions out and just stomping your opponent out in the corner, which usually means you want higher lvled minions for your combos and pressure, which means you want your huts out as long as possible. shes extremely fucked up if she corners you with enough minions and requires a shitton of work to get out when shes already set up, and is definitely a contender for one of the most fucked up offensive situations when she has everything started

For anyone interested picking up Ram, she is incredibly straightforward if you don't over complicate it. Button combination/Seq normals. For P and K buttons she doesn't gets gatlings and special cancels but she gets these instead. Generally it start with a normal button, being plus, (being plus), ends with overhead/low/launcher mid. The main difference besides the lack of special cancels out of (or into it) that Ram can just mash these on whiff you don't need to make contact with them (like most normals gatlings). Which makes them IB-ing much harder (Ram's 5P is virtually unseeable in Xrd's visual noise) . So you just mash them and have fun. They give no meter. Sword deployment: You're throwing out only H Sword in neutral, both sword in the corner and in combos. She can either call the swords with a manual command or with Rev Specials (214HS/214S). They can hit them or you to disappear. You can deploy/recall cancel from most normals not just the sword ones. Sword normals: S normals are horizontal, the H ones are vertical. 2S and 2H are both, they're very slow and unsafe in exchange. All sword normals give an insane amount of Tension (slightly less than 16%) on contact and can gatling them to each other the same way like any normal Xrd character. 2S and 2H doesn't have a swordless version and they're generally very unsafe without meter at their own. But they're covering each other well when you have two swords. Swing them but with caution. The H sword normals without sword are good pressure normals, especially the aforementioned sword covering you. J.P and J.K: They're fast, they have insanely good hitbox/hurtboxes and function like normal Guilty Gear air normals. Abuse them. Command normals: Your command normals are an unreactable low and overhead, Space them nicely to not get bodied on hit since neither of them are cancellable. D Buttons. 5D is a long range overhead. 2D is a very small (both hurtbox and hitbox) launcher low, J.D is complicated but nobody will ever punish it so just do it. Special moves: Dauro. Forward advancing safeish move with two version. Juggles, makes your special cancellable normals safeish, does your taxes. Cherish it but don't spam it on block the regular one is prone to IB-d. Gives no meter. Cassius: Upwards fireball. Covers H sword deployment and acts like a budget 5H. Also your safest special to cancel into if they in the curve area. Gives meter. Flama Cargo: Launcher command grab. If they'e blocking too much just grab them. Gives meter. Sildo Detruo: Very slow very forward advancing overhead. If the sword covers you you can use it, but otherwise everyone will throw it on reaction. Gives meter, but it doesn't matter. You have like four better overhead options. Martelli and Forpelli: Anti footsie tool and they're cancellable into each other or sword deployment. They're fast, disjoint and give you a lot of meter. You need at least one sword to perform them. Overdrives: Calvados: Unreactable beam, which is mostly unpunishable on block/whiff unless you're doing it point blank. Does insane regular and chip damage. It is also Strike invul. Needs both swords. For the latter part you will use it rarely. Trance: The meat grinder. You will never hit anyone with it raw. Either do it on an OTG opponent or just to make them block for a solid two seconds. Gives you like two free mixup option at least. You need both sword to be deployed to use it. Insane checkmate potential. Explode: Reversal super which OTGs, and moves forward. Like Mortobato in Strive it is extremely fast has good range. The additional perk of being near impossible to whiffpunish on reaction (she dashes very forward). Also OTGs in combos. The damage is not Mortobato like though. It does not depend on your swords, so you ALWAYS can use it. You can make all of them more invincible and do even more damage with spending the whole Burst Bar. Combos: Sword normals and most of your special moves gives you a very lenient juggle. You can put together an alright combo by trial and error. Mash the button combinations them in some order and guarantees either good oki, stagger or launch for not too much damage. Optimizing it is hard but you won't lose much by not doing it.

Am very happy about Xrd rollback. My favorite characters are Baiken and Slayer, but since I’m not an Xrd vet (very casual player because of the netcode) I can’t execute their combos online (as they’re both BASICALLY link combos) I can’t wait to get some good practice in. I absolutely adore kuchinachi/ Azami as well as k-pilebunker combos and will actually be able to start using them.

Rams have been winning top eights in Xrd recently. The last one at CEOtaku was blowout. I love that about Xrd given how different characters are that matchups are pretty wild in diversity.

As a jack o main coming from strive who wants to play jack o in rev 2, it feels really really weird. She still looks fun as hell tho, and I plan on maining her, but seeing her rev 2 version really made me appreciate her strive rework even more

I don't know if I'd be able to play Xrd. Strive is my first (and still only) fighting game, and Xrd looks so much more complicated that it's pretty daunting. But I'm also pretty curious because it does look really cool. If I do, I'll probably play Elphelt because I think she's cute, and I refuse to feel bad for it.

I have no interest in playing xrd but this video is really interesting to understand the game and the use of actual matches to show characters instead of training mode is great.

I always thought Xrd looked fun, but I was brand new to fighting games and way too intimidated by it. I always regretted not jumping into it, I'm glad I get to come back to it and play my favorite iteration of Sol.

Hey Romolla, what character should I play if I want to be a gigantic guy with huge muscles who also has a very large damage command grab. Despite being slow and not having the best movement options, he can still be a massive threat, as the moment he gets in your healthbar can be in danger.

I'm happy I'll be able to touch Xrd again after bouncing off it hard years ago. Really like venom and it'll be neat to mess around with him, as I like training mode. But I gotta admit, Xrd makes me appreciate Strive a lot more too. Needing to learn 956 motions for IAD, manual microdashing, and full jump combos as BnBs are rough and just not my bag. Hell, I actually hate jumping entirely- didn't expect to like strives gravity and weight. But I'll deal because poolball set ups are *so* sick. I really do hope venom comes to strive even if he's less crazy because they did a damn good job with Bridget- she feels good and kept a good amount of mechanics. As for Xrd, I'll just have to see if it's not the end of the world that I'm bad at IAD and jump cancel combos, lol.

johnny actually has the highest return damage wise on average. with lvl2 or 3, any hit leads to a high damage combo, even his throw. most of his bnb's don't use meter because his meter is much better spent on other more op moves (zwei, 6k, baccus, whiff cancel). another thing that makes johnny stupidly strong is that lvl2/3 is an absurdly good whiff punish poke, and also allows for 1hit hit-confirms because you already input most of the motion for the mist cancel.

I really like playing Baiken on Xrd even though it was my first FG, and I loved watching JP clips of her to try and learn new ways to play her, but after a while two of the top players that used Baiken (only name I remember is Sharon) stoped playing her. I always assumed it was because she was too hard and inconsistent for top level. Now with rollback and higher expectations on myself I might not like her inconsistencies on combos, but I do hope more Baiken players pop up

I may be a uneducated but as you mention , answer nuetral is underrated. But I really love how he play a hit and run game for time then go balls to the wall when he has cards or meter to play with. Personally to me it makes game plan simple for me to understand

Man. Xrd is crazy. I play Kazuya in Tekken mostly because he can be taken just about as far as your execution can take you; and like, most Xrd characters can match that (is there any character with a triple just frame?) combo theory and level of freestyling. In Tekken, if you get a wack ass wall angle, and recognize it, you can extend a combo you would have dropped. Pretty much every combo feels like that in Xrd lol. You pick up one weird hit, and you feel like a god. There are definitely super difficult inputs too, like haehyun loops are crazy. +R def feels like that too, but like, to the point that no one knows for sure whats happening 100% of the time lol. Bonkers.

It's a good thing I'm the type to play characters I actually like vs top tiers! I'm playing Bedman and Dizzy!

You can't put FAB as an example of Pot being reasonable when he's so good that his Pot gets put on a separate tier on the lists as a joke, also when you see him play he needs to instantblock every single hit coming at him just to have enough meter to run his game and he's never even made top 8 in evo. It's so bad.

I've been struggling with character pick for pretty long time. I wanted to play Johnny, since he is technical and somewhat respected top tier. People say his mist stance treasure hunt is his hardest stuff wich turned out to be pretty easy, but for me his jDSDD is main problem. I've spend around 5 hours trying this wall combo and still can't land it consistantly. So I'll have to stick with Elphelt.

Pick Jam, go forward, kill. I'm so excited to be able to actually properly learn my alltime favorite fighting game character, Xrd is the game I learned the absolute basics in, like actually doing a DP input and IADing, but I never got a chance to learn it properly cause I picked it up one or two years before Strive came out, so the community was small and the netcode was bad. Now I finally get to play people and learn this game and that makes me really happy.

I really wouldnt put Bedman in hard to pick up, he has some of the easiest universal bnb combos. Sure, his movement and rewind might be a bit odd at first, but if you are a new player picking him up you won´t know anything different, meaning learning it will come just as naturally as picking any other char up. Oh and he only requires 236/214 moves.

Strive is the first one I played, but I have Xrd and I like to play around with it. I think I'd like to learn I-no since she was my main in Strive, but I can't help but be a doomer after the nerfs. And I was looking forward to a more playable Baiken, but now I feel like the result is actually kind of boring and XRD Baiken is kind of more interesting. She has all these counters, while Strive Baiken just has a basic Smash Bros Marth counter. Also, Dizzy is just cool, those are the three I'm looking at.

Which character would be good to pick up for a Strive Testament player? I only messed around a little with xrd and the game was already mostly dead when I bought it but the netcode is a great occasion to actually learn this game, I'm hyped

So excited that I can finally try Venom, always wanted to but never played this game. And I'm a training mode monster anyway so that doesn't bother me.

I'm definitely in the minority for preferring Strive's Ram to Xrd's. Back when I tried to learn Xrd, she was the main character that appealed to me, but the sheer amount of nonsense I needed to grind in training to even get my foot in the door of basic play was just discouraging and burnt me out before I ever really got started. That was years ago now, and I'm a better player today in countless ways than I was back then, so I'll give her another try. Maybe try Ky and Sin as backups, we'll just have to see

I enjoy both Jam and Elphelt, for their personalities and gameplay. But Strive is superior in one particular way to Rev2, and nobody will ever, EVER change my mind on this. Strive doesn't have Stun. Rev2 does. Therefore, Rev2 is inherently less fun to play on the backfoot because of that mechanic. And to people who want Slayer back... why? He's mean.
