He's a lefty that learned to play a right handed guitar upside down, but kept it strung like a right handed guitar. When the left handed strat came out, he strung the strings upside down.
I'm also one of those oddball guitarists...but it's always baffled me as to why it should be so damn odd? Would have thought that the vast majority of lefties, picking up a guitar for the 1st time, would likely be picking up a standard right-handed guitar, that being far more readily to hand, than a much less likely left-handed guitar just happening to be there waiting for them? Anyone ever come across a right hander playing a standard left-handed guitar upside down by the way??
I've seen Dick for the past 15 years every time I had the chance. This is about as close to an actual "Smoke on the Water" as he would get, meaning that he ALWAYS threw in a bunch of other stuff. Sam Bolle, his bass player, said that he had to watch every second because Dick would go anywhere he wanted, and throw it to Sam for solos at a moment's notice. Wonderful stuff; we have lost a true giant of music!!
I've spoken with Sam Bolle a few times before and after gigs. He says that at any time, Dick would point to him, and he simply "took it" until Dick decided to get back in. Yes, he improvised constantly!
By far the best cover of Smoke On The Water I've ever heard. Has the energy and style that every other rendition is lacking. Same goes for Rumble. Only Mr. Dale could match Link Wray's rawness. RIP Dick!
@@surfrocker2545 I grew up in Santa Ana, Calif....saw a LOT of live events at the Rendezvous Ball room in balboa.. At one time, Fender and Rickenbacher were made in Santa Ana....
We just witnessed a true genius and legend at work. DICK DALE Will be missed .... Stratocaster God Stratocaster genius. This legend must have nickel silver running in his veins. The man may be gone but his music will never die. Rock on good buddy.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
No one but Dick Dale is King of the Surf Guitar. He was like The Ventures in one guitar or Deep Purple in one guitar. It makes perfect sense that he took up martial arts as the guru of reverb consciousness. Misirilou was the only reason I got a '64 Fender Jaguar and he passed away a half hour's drive from me RIP, King.
I think that the order of the songs are like this: 1. Shake and Stomp 2. Death of a Gremmie 3. Smoke on the water 4. Peter Gunn 5. Hot Links: Caterpillar Crawl
I pulled into home base in fountain valley in 1980 and Dick Dale pulled in directly behind me in a 56 Nomad station wagon blue and white with Deltones on the license plate. He got out and I walked up and recognized him and shook his hand. Cool dude. Rip
A great guy, you had to love him. We were in the Air Guard 5 years and Airforce 1.5 years He had a Harley D. flat head and I had Triumph 500. Rich Selfridge What a ball.
I'd say 'medley', I heard a number of really fine tunes in there. Outstanding guitarist, real original. Sorry he's gone, but the recordings are still here for everybody.
And people thought Massachusetts only brought you Ben Franklin, Paul Revere, Teddy Ballgame, Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, JFK, Boston, The Cars, and Aerosmith !!!
I have been heavily influenced by Dick Dale and if not for him I would not being playing guitar in the first place. He is truly one of the greatest living guitarists
