In this guitar lesson, we're going to learn how to find the chords in a major key. This is very important for when you start writing your own songs and when you want to figure your favorite songs out for yourself. It's important to note that the first step to knowing which chords occur in a major key is having a good understanding of the major scale.

Thank you for explaining A Major scale, it has more shape than g major. I needed to understand the complete theory of how to make the sharp chords and there is a f# major and a f#minor.This really helped me a lot. Just beginning to learn theory. You are a good teacher!!

I am not a beginner, read music fluently but had a lot of abrasion/grief trying to learn theory...until your presentation, which put all I had incompletely digested together. Like most others who are too hogtied to comment, I too am quite grateful. Splendid!

I know you are a great teacher. but due to my lack of knowledge, I have no clue of what 1A, 2B .... mean. I don't understand any logic of why you switch around the frets. I don't know what to do now. Not sure if I should continue to learn guitar. Music may not be a thing for me although I really want to learn guitar.

I have a question.? This is for a very beginner. Is there any way you could use an app to show colored dots on a scale in a separate window in bottom of page as you show chords or open and closed notes on the scales you are playing? . You may not realize but if I just click on a video to teach me the chords. I cannot tell Exactly what fingers are being pressed down or if they are up??. When the fingers are close to each other, say the 4th and 5th fingers are right by each other. I can tell you are playing one of the fingers but i dont know if the other is also down?? . It's really hard to see. But if we had a chord fret picture to assist at bottom it would really give a 2 dimension of seeing it 2 ways. I am a very visual learner, 🤓its elementary I know. Lol lol. You do great job showing us when you are playing and telling us. But, It's really hard when your looking from me to the screen, like when you walk through the scales to see which notes are down and which ones are open?? 🤔 I can't see that I have to rely on my hearing?? To tell what is being played.?? Thanks so much for all your help, and considering this request. I think this would be a great tool for beginners. Have a great day. 🙂

Damnit. I came here looking for ideas for songs in the key of A Major. Your title implies such, but it manys any old major key. A bit misleading, if you ask me.

Hi, I have question. Instead of playing the 2, 3, 6 as minors (i.e. root, minor 3rd, 5th), can't we play them as root, *raised* third (i.e. fourth) and fifth? This makes it match with the major scale of the root key, which I presume is the reason we are lowering the third for the 2, 3, 6 in the first place. Similarly, for the 7th then, we have four possible combinations: R (7th), lowered 3rd (of the 7th), lowered 5th (of the 7th); R, lowered 3rd, raised 5th; R, raised 3rd, lowered 5th; R, raised 3rd, raised 5th. Thanks in advance, Shyam

greatly appreciate the lesson. my only concern is that I have chord progressions in my head and I'm trying to figure out what other chords(major and minor) I can use in the song. Ex: I hear some songs that actually use 5-6 major chords in that song and it seems to be in the same key(look up transcription for song "Don't Look Back" by She and Him; they have about 5-6 major chords in that song). I thought most keys have no more than 3 major chords in them.
@Free_Falastin2024
@Free_Falastin2024 2 года назад
They're switching keys throughout the progression. They may be using 3 major chords in 1 key and using 2 more from another key that compliments the first key signature. It adds complexity and pop music isn't about that at all.

Can you do a lesson on every kind of muting there is, both left and right hands? i.e. Aren't leftover melody notes not suppose to be sounding once you've moved on to the next note?
@MusoraMedia
@MusoraMedia 8 лет назад
I don't have any plans on making a free lesson on that topic, but thanks for the suggestion. I cover muting in The Guitar System: www.GuitarSystem.com Not always. There are cases where you'll let one or more notes ring out while playing the next. Remember, there aren't any "rules" just "guidelines". :) Having complete control of all the different muting methods is important to get the sounds you hear in your head to come out of the guitar. :)
@JoeDoe2
@JoeDoe2 8 лет назад
How many muting methods are we talking about that you teach? How many are left hand and how many are right hand? What are they called? Does each method have a name that would be known to all advanced players?
@MusoraMedia
@MusoraMedia 8 лет назад
They don't really have names other than left hand muting, right hand muting, and palm muting. These are the main muting types I use. I'm sure there are more out there that I'm forgetting. :) Strumming Hand - Palm muting: to deaden the sustain of a chord or note using your palm/side of your hand. - Using the palm/side of your hand/side of your pinky to completely mute strings you don’t want to come through. - Using the tips or pads of any finger to completely mute strings you don’t want to come through. Fretting Hand - Using your thumb to come over the neck and mute the lower strings (E, A, D) - Using the tips or pads of any finger to completely mute strings. - Laying all your fingers over the strings to mute all the strings at once (Creating a “thwak” sound). Usually used in transitions between chords. - Slightly lifting your fingers from their fretted position to cut off the note or chord you’re playing. This is a great way to create really tight chord transitions or to create staccato notes and chords.

GuitarLessons.com OK thanks. How does Fleetwood Mac get the muted sounding staccato eighth notes in the chorus of the song Hold Me? You can hear it most prominently in the bridge at the 1:55 mark. Do you think he's using a pick or fingerpicking? The notes sound very short and muted. Rather unusual.
@MusoraMedia
@MusoraMedia 8 лет назад
The part at 1:55 is just aggressively palm-muted notes. Some of the notes in the chorus sound like muted natural harmonics. Where you play a natural harmonic, but leave your finger placed over the fret on the string instead of immediately removing it. Can't say for sure, but that's what it sounds like to my ears.

From my understanding there are no major scales named after flats,only natural notes and sharps.Im not sure why,but I looked It up and there are 12 major scales,but if you were to count the flats there would be more.Can anyone help me understand why?
