Saw this in concert decades ago and it was the most amazing experience. I think I shed a tear on the day, and just found this recording and it's as amazing as I remember it being. Shed a tear again. Absolutely incredible.
Really interesting listening to this - and even more so given that the original performance by Clapton has now been released (at long last!!). Great to compare and contrast each player's interpretation of the score. It is a beautiful piece of music and rarely a day goes by without me listening to it. So evocative - some of the movements send chills down my spine. So sad to think that Michael Kamen is no longer with us - such a talented composer and conductor.
11:49 - A 1985 Camero driven by a soulful man wheels slowly through the outskirts of Los Angeles as the sun sets. The man is worried about the Japanese gangsters who have threatened to follow him to the west coast. A 5-year-old boy he has been taking care of is asleep in the back seat. 18:20 - It's morning in the Chicago suburbs. The paper boy goes by on his bike, hitting the porch perfectly with the well thrown news. An hour later, he's at the local high school -- a big, new structure that holds 2,000 students. Bullies in letter jackets bump him in the hallway, but he pays them no heed: He knows he can win a new motorcycle (and the heart of his crush) if he and his band of misfits can just get his rocket working in time for the science fair. It's nearly done. Today's the big day.
